Maybe I'm crazy, but whenever I see a story like this, I get the sense there are a LOT of metaphors being conveyed to "people in the know."

It really looked like a huge ball of dirt eh. I wonder what is in the middle? Is the core solid or is it literally a huge pile of rocks and dirt that would fall apart if it stopped moving?

That really varies from asteroid to asteroid. Are you in an area where it snows? The flakey hard mix of dirt, gravel and densely packed snow that builds up on the road is what many asteroids are made of. Others are actual floating rocks. Yet others are effectively giant gold nuggets worth more than humanity's GDP since the death of Napoleon.

Think of space as an ocean and the asteroid as a tanker. In this example our probe would be a tugboat. When your objects float the energy required to redirect them becomes significantly lower. They'd still upscale the device a few hundred times but what they're looking for is a relatively minor change of course that requires a fairly modest amount of energy when put in relation to the potential damage it averts.
we need to figure out a way to land rockets on asteroids so we can move them in a controlled manner. this would also come in handy when we start mining asteroids. jut saying.

That's possible but please remember that the calculations for things like that are just long not al that complicated. NASA used the equivalent of a modern pocket calculator to run the numbers required to land people on the moon and nowadays we have data bases of hundreds of thousands of stellar objects and the means to simulate their interactions.
I'm more worried about bogus clinical trials killing me because we understand the human body significantly less than the interactions of dead rocks in space.

What do you mean, this is for planetary defense? Would you rather them not test this out and wait for an actual asteroid that's a threat? And going to space is expensive no matter what you do. What would be an ideal price to you?

I think these homeless people would prefer not to have their home planet's surface obliterated by space rocks. Mentalities like this actively contribute to the problem because solutions that could address it never get researched.

Except this is in the VACUUM OF SPACE where gravity works much differently. So no, it's not like throwing an egg at a wall. This is a test for a planetary defense system to protect Earth from future asteroids that could cause an extinction event. They have been working on this for 7 years so you're a little late to complain about it.
