I totally agree that the lack of the cross-traffic alert does seem to be a miss. I also have a Tesla Model S (but an older one). Also the lack of Apple Carplay/Android Auto is a big miss as well. The Model S is a great car overall, but there are some things I think could be improved. The good thing is that some of it can be fixed with OTA updates, which is a big advantage to Tesla.
On your note of adjusting cruise control distance between the car in front of you and your car, it should be available when you are in adaptive cruise control mode on the steering wheel. The button that you scroll on the right of the steering wheel adjusts your speed in cruise control, but that same button can also be clickable in the left or right directions to increase or decrease your cruise distance between the car in front of you. You can also just directly press down on that same button to call Tesla voice assistant. The horn button location is really dumb, imo. I hope in the next model S refresh the button is put back onto the air bag location. I also think that the lack of a HUD, even a simple one should be at least available in the Model S. Especially when you are paying that much for it. The fact that the cheaper Hyundai Ioniq 5 has it means that, I think, Tesla will likely bring that feature into their next new models. It's such a feature, yet powerfully important feature, in my opinion. Your nitpicks are completely justifiable and it should 100% be important complaints for new Tesla Model S potential owners to know about. Especially with the new competition in the luxury EV compact sedan car size is starting to heat up now with the Mercedes EQS, Lucid Air, and way more.
I also am in the camp that the yoke is not worth the trouble when paying that much for the car. They 100% should have the standard steering wheel as an option for those that want that.
Careful using the "12V" socket to power your radar detector - it's actually more like 16V and some detectors don't like it. I've seen a few people on TMC report that Escort detectors really don't like the higher voltage and burn out.
One of your best videos Dave! Good work w/ the lens Kathy. Tesla is cutting edge, but there are always areas for improvement. Side collision warnings are surprising to me since cars a quarter of the price have it
Tesla may be cutting edge but trying to deliver a better mousetrap sometimes is a little too much. Trying to eliminate turn signals reminds me of a Jane Fonda movie where they replaced having sex with a pill. No thanks, I prefer the old fashioned way,.
On my model 3 if you touch the percentage indicator you can switch it to range in miles without going into the screen. On auto pilot, I can use the scroll wheel to adjust the car following distance. Maybe that car is different. I have a 2018 model 3.
Another candid video Dave. I completely agree with many if not most of youobservations. I agonized a lot before buying my second Tesla which is a model Y because of the lack of some of these features and the firm ride as compared to say a Mercedes or BMW. Unfortunately none of those cars were available in the timeframe that I wanted so I ended up getting the new model Y.
a car at this price range Should have all the things that you mention (and door pockets). The fact it doesn't have the little cross traffic alerts (which my JEep wrangler has) is sad because while FSD may take care of that, the fact that FSD is like, 12-15K now, and its $6K for enhanced autopilot, many people won't get those features, and shoul have those "standart" safety features that 28K Hyundais have!.
My Audi has the cross traffic collision emergency braking. It has have me too many times with people speeding in parking lots. One time it stopped suddenly and then the truck speed behind me. It should be mandatory in all cars henceforward but then we know car makers will shrimp to save a buck without regard to public safety. Thank you Dave and Kathy for your videos. They are informative and you deliver excellent insight into what things are missing and quirky features of the Tesla. Not ready to be a member of the Musk followers.
I have an EQS and it’s crazy that this car is lacking so many basics for the same amount of money. I’ve heard a lot of these gripes from people who talk on various owner forums but this was a more succinct summary than I’ve heard. Don’t mind the apologists, a lot of these things the MS is lacking just seem like pure hubris on the part of the company. They don’t include them simply because it’s cheaper for them to do it their way, there’s no grand vision.
Another great video, Dave! Agree with all your complaints, at least you have ventilated seats (MYLR owner here). The lack of RCTA really astounds me, and I wish the BSS had an audible warning. These almost stopped me from buying a Tesla as I am sure one day it will cost me an accident. However, I doubt my next car will be a Tesla unless they fix these and other pain points.
I'll also mention one my favorite complaints that you didnt mention. Tesla designs the screens and yoke with small text and symbols that are OK IF: 1. you are a 25 year old with perfect vision, and 2. have very steady fingers and 3. lighting is optimal. If not all three are true then things get dicey.
Correction to my last comment I meant to say great unbiased presentation Dave, I would like to add the yolk itself compounded by the horn location is a deal breaker for me even if could afford a car like yours. To me the review you did on Kathy’s Gv-60 sounded like the perfect EV, I appreciate we wouldn’t be where we are today without Tesla and I love them for that but just take a look around.
Great video to highlight many of the things people take for granted on modern cars: Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Apple Car Play (full integration with all or the Apple ecosystem), and 360 top view camera - all not available on these expensive cars. Yolk, horn - crazy stuff! But, to each, their choice….
All valid issues, you are not nitpicking at all. The lack of rear Cross traffic alert is a huge miss. Tesla needs to stop acting like full autonomy is about to happen tomorrow and at least add rear Cross traffic alert and a proper Birds Eye 360 view cameras.
I rarely comment on reviews like this, but I thought you pointed out many of the obvious flaws in the design. As a company, Tesla is doing many things right but their hardheadedness on some of these decisions is just head scratching for me. Of course the Tesla die Hards are commenting that this is on you for buying the car. But you are doing RUclips reviews and you have a right to your opinion. Especially since you bought a MS. Tesla would do well to hire some engineers and designers from other established companies to improve on their misses. As more and more luxury EV’s hit the market, Tesla will be forced to make changes or lose some market share. As it stands today, Tesla has very little competition. But that is changing slow but sure.
Thanks Dave. As an old guy and current owner of a Dec 2021 MSLR and former owner of a 2014 MS, i agree with virtually everything you say. But, since some commenters dont seem to understand the advantages of the MS i would like to mention a few: 1. Beautiful inside and out, 2. Very comfortable seats, 3. Wicked Fast!, 4. Two large screens with great display and very fast refresh that do tons of neat stuff, and 5. the best sound system i have ever expericneced in an automobile. As for your comments. For the Yoke - I do NOT release it to let the wheel come back to center. AND, I never put my hands on those top 'thumb rest' things. i keep my hands on the bottom flat part of the yoke or on the sides with thumbs pointed up where top of thumbs are at level of scroll wheels. . There have been youtube videos and TMC forum threads about how to use the Yoke. But, I still would prefer a normal wheel with stalks. Yesterday late aftrnoon when driving into the sun, I could NOT see any of the symbols or text on the Yoke! And, yes, i think the ride is too firm. Not as good as my 2014 MS! I actually like the 'old' taillights and chargeport on my MSLR.
I agree with you on everything apart from the horn. In most cases, it's safe to assume that the horn is being used in quick reaction scenarios. Such as: someone just pulled out in front of you and you gotta smash your brakes or you have swerve to avoid a car, etc. I believe in these scenarios two hands on the wheel is better than one. In my opinion and from my experience, it's dangerous everytime I've taken the time to press the center horn in any of those scenarios where my reaction time matters. You can't press the horn and swerve at the same time as good as you could with one hand vs two hands on the steering wheel. That's just my opinion.
The only way to get waze to audibly alert you would be to run with one or two Bluetooth ear buds and let waze connect to your ears that way. Totally non optimal but I’ve actually done that while traveling with passengers in the car who were sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb their rest.
On my Model 3, I just tap the battery state indicator at the top of the screen and it toggles between percent and distance ... pretty easy ... no need to go into Settings menu ...
As always great job Dave at being in biased with your presentation, I would like to mention most of the short falls of the model S my Ev-6 does not have and for tens of thousands less, I’m just saying.
Dave, looks like a update is getting ready to roll out with a completely new energy app. They probably never included the old app in the s and x refresh as this was being developed. Maybe that will help you with the info on center screen for range and charge display. Update should be Version .36 looks like.
@@outofspecdave1554 Now that would be a great comparison between the two cars! Then against a more traditional manufacturer like the Mercedes EQS would be a great set of comparisons.
The problem is the SOC or Miles display on the S is located on the screen above the yoke; not on the center console as I said in the video. And I don’t believe that separate screen is touch screen on the S. But I will check!
Sorry to say, but a lot of it was picking (20k, not new). You did bring up some good points. Since the car would cost me an extra 35 percent in Taxes ( Nova Scotia, Canada) will not be buying one soon. You are great at this, keep it up.
I can see that you did extensive research on this car and still opted to buy it despite the drawbacks. Besides the used car damage, you knew all this going in. It doesn't matter anyway because you will get tired of this car in a couple of months and buy something else anyway.
Nice video laying the groundwork to justify trading in this car for another expensive EV within a few months. Hard to keep up with all the EVs Dave finds he’s unhappy with and sells/trades.
you need to do a little more research. you can adjust the distance of cruise control with the right scroll wheel. You can also just tap on the battery percentage or miles on the screen and it will change.
Thanks. Will try to adjust distance of cruise control as you suggest. I thought I tried that and it didn’t work. Which screen are you suggesting I tap on the battery % or miles? The center screen above the yoke is where this info is located and I don’t believe that is touch screen. Both these things worked as you describe on my previous model 3 and Y’s, but this one is an S and I see differences. Or at least thought I did…. Thanks for watching and helping with your comment!
Although the S is a great car, it is just too expensive for what it is, on top of that it is depreciating too fast! I sold my 2021 refresh about a month ago and I just see it keep dropping in value. Thats some way to burn money right there.
Sorry I thought they would have updated the software on the S, I have an old S the tapping in the car does not work, but it does in the phone App. If Tesla knows the Tapping doesn't work in the S, it should be a matter of a software update.
I don’t think I’ll ever understand the want for a light on the mirror for blind spot monitoring when you have a camera display of the lane when you engage the turn signal.
Sadly, the previous iteration was better - better interior, vertical display was better, better turn signals, manual glove box button, and chrome looked more expensive, especially in the dark gray version.
Elon Musk and Apple - hmm. I've watched another RUclipsr (who mainly covers news and financials of Tesla) , who said there was some bad blood between Musk and Apple. Interesting though if you look at tweets from Elon, it always has at the bottom "Twitter for iPhone". Hmmm 🙂 Agree though about Apple Airplay not being on these cars. I'm sure there are people who may find that this is the deal breaker in buying a Tesla car.
Yikes. Shady that the damage was not represented properly. Buyer beware is always a good reminder of how to be when showing up to inspect any car you’re thinking about purchasing.
It is not a new car. It is a used car. Title should be changed. On the backup camera you can show it full screen if you wish. That gives you a 17 inch backup screen.

Never have I heard so many complaints. Why even buy the car if all you can do is talk about what you wish for. You are paying for the privilege of having the quickest sedan on the planet. If you want old obsolete tech like apple CarPlay and android auto you should not buy a Tesla. We have it in a 2022 Honda civic touring and it’s plagued with problems. The dealership knows this and told us they have no fix for it. The model is plaid is for people who are into speed and power. I could care less about Apple CarPlay I don’t use it. I don’t have a dog so I don’t care where the vents in the back are. If I want a sedan that’s gut wrenching fast the Tesla is at the top of the food chain. If you want all that other stuff go buy something else and enjoy reading the rear license plate of a plaid. Enjoy getting left behind every single time. Yeah you’ll have apple CarPlay but you will not have anything near the performance of a plaid. Not all cars are for everyone. If you want luxury and have 150K to spend buy a used Bentley or a used Rose Royce. If you have pets buy an SUV giving your pet the space it needs. If you need apple and android for the car buy a Hyundai. But to stand there and complain about what you’re not getting is silly. Don’t by a vehicle if it doesn’t have what you want.
Hmm. All of these things you knew about when you by it. So complaining over things you knew about is a bit like ordering a chocolate ice cream and start complaining over it because it have chocolate in it. So this was not a good video. All the other videos I liked but this is just like a child complaining over its new toy.
Normally Love Your Videos But Way Way Way Too Much Pissing and Moaning and Complaining!!! If you’re so dissatisfied Dump test another car and get something else but You’re a grown man making choices. Please Quit F ing Complaining

You could nitpick, after all that car costs a lot of money. Your car has the perfect stance and look, especially with those wheels.
My 2021 model 3 Long Range cycles from SOC to range just by tapping it on the display. Strange that the model S does not.

Thanks for the update Dave. I would also be a bit disappointed. I would try to flip the car. I love my M3 LR, hard to see any replacement for it.
Spend one hour using the horn and turn signals to get used to using them when you first get the car, then there will be no problems.

A used car is like a box of chocolate... Nice work on your channel. Love the enthusiasm!
My bad I called the steering wheel a yolk “egg” and it should be a yoke, doesn’t make like it any better.
Just tap the range or miles displayed on screen anytime you want to see the other. It’s a toggle display on demand.

The wear on the yoke is a known problem. It is deteriorating much faster than we would expect.
Dave could you share the make/model of the radar detector you use?
Escort Max 360 C
I think the point of the Yolk is to force you to use 2 hands. Is one-hand steering awkward?
Sorry to say, but a lot of it was picking (20k, not new). You did bring up some good points.

So, how long are you keeping this one? Lack of grab handles in Tesla is indeed super annoying
I don’t think I’ll ever understand the want for a light on the mirror for blind spot monitoring when you have a camera display of the lane when you engage the turn signal.
Because the smart person is looking at his rear view outside mirror as he gets ready to change lanes, not at the cartoon on the dash...
agree with you David. Both would be great
Time to trade it in before the first loan payment is due.
Sadly, the previous iteration was better - better interior, vertical display was better, better turn signals, manual glove box button, and chrome looked more expensive, especially in the dark gray version.
You mentioned most of the reasons why I would never buy a MS.
Hi Dave, check out the Mercedes EQE, another planet and even cheaper than Tesla. Greetings from Italy.
I am looking forward to checking out that car, but no sign of it yet in the US....
For the price of the product they definitely need to improve there quality no exemption!!!

Good video. Thank you for sharing the info. It's very helpful.
As for your first few comments, before you got to the wish list, you bought a USED car with 22k miles. Expect cosmetic imperfections.

Thanks so much for your feedback
