They were urban crews from the mainland and couldn’t bring their trucks over due to the car barges being down that day so they had to catch a ferry and have an ambo drive them too the call, although they underestimated how many could fit in the ambo but luckily there was a nice lady who offered to take them.

The rural fire service lost their capabilities to combat urban fires after a dispute between them and the united firefighters union, this culminated in a loss of training and capabilities for many rural fire brigades in the early to mid 2010s. Initially being that many of these island brigades once had their own structural equipment and training and didn't require the transport of retained or career firefighters to the island to combat structural fires. it was viewed that more broadly in Queenland that permo and retained firefighters could get there as fast as volunteers and be both more effective and better trained than volunteers, hence the push by the UFU. For obvious reasons removing urban capabilites from a town or regions only fire service does cause many issues, a prominent example being the Russel Island fire, Russel Island RFS used to be trained in structural and offensive firefighting however they lost that capability due to the dispute, what this meant was that a fire brigade had arrived within minutes of the house fire however they could not enter the structure to rescue the persons involved to a lack of equipment. The very truck used by Russel Island RFS is a bygone of when RFS used to fight building fires. This collective mess is what causes instances of firies having to take ferries, travel long distances ect to fight a fire because the local brigades are no longer equiped to do so.
