  • Toe to toe comparison of two quality brands. Allen Edmonds is the go to brand if you desire American made quality. Made in Portugal, the Carlos Santos hand grade line offers exquisite looks and finer details to go along with quality construction. Both shoes cost right at $400, are good year welted, 270 degree for the Santos' and 360 degree for AE. I picked up the Allen Edmonds almost a year ago from the local AE store. They were the second AE's I'd purchased after I had bought AE Chelsea Boots. As always, my Carlos Santos shoes come from TheNobleShoe.com out of Sweden.
    Leave a comment and let me know which shoe you would drop $400 for.
    Thank you and enjoy.

    Trivia! Allen Edmonds can produce up to 1 million shoes a year from what I heard! The Santos factory has a capacity for 400 pairs a day (say 130-150k per year) so volume wise it's no contest!

      Wow! I like supporting the small businesses. AE can afford to sacrifice a bit of quality and be fine with the quantity they are producing.

    Allen Edmonds is always on sale and most of the main styles can be had for around $200. Personally for me even though Allen Edmonds qc has been terrible for a few years, but I'm from Chicago and the shoes are made an hour fifteen away right here in the midwest, and they use a lot of leather from Horween in Chicago. I own Carlos Santos boots, and shoes from other brands in Europe. From my experience will Carlos Santos, I feel that the leather is very thin and I do believe the uppers can have solid structure after 10 years. But honestly I keep coming back to Allen Edmonds since they are made here in the midwest and they source leather from Horween.

      I love the fact that they are made here in the US. I'll continue to buy them, just not at the retail price.

    Picked up my first Allen Edmonds Park Avenues for $10.80 in a thrift store (May 2018). Nearly perfect condition. Since then I've gotten more than 20 other pairs. I'm addicted.

    Not even close, no knock on Allen Edmonds but for the money you have to look at Carlos Santos, TLB, Cobbler Union and a few others, Allen Edmonds on sale is a different story

      Thanks. I have more CS boxes in my closet than any other brand. And Kostas keeps bringing out a new irresistible pair. Especially, the latest GMTO offering. A pair of Monks that are the hottest thing anywhere right now. Check them out if you haven't already.

    Very acute summation about AE. I love AE 1st and Factory 2nds as an everyday office work shoe or somber event where more elegant shoes would stand out. In AE you still look more put together than the average man, the leather quality high and w/ proper care they can take a beating and look fantastic for decades. Wrt imperfections, exchange it or especially w/2nds totally overlook because the price is so low. Same can be said for Meermin . AE and Meermin are 2 brands that I like for high quality workhorse and beater shoes. One could really stop there. However brands like Carlos Santos and Carmina for specifically more elegant elements are fantastic options.

    Of course you nailed it. I’m happy that you didn’t suggest that you should just trash the Allen Edmonds because you do need a work shoe and a dress shoe. I do think when comparing the length of the cap toe, you should line it up at the vamp, as Carlos Santos looks to be a slightly longer shoe so that might be one source of the longer cap toe.

    Kostas! The Carlos Santos, for the money is the best shoe. Still love Allen Edmonds Strands but for captoe oxford Carlos is the best. Especially with bottom and tops. The way Carlos does the channel stitch and his the seem gives even Carmina a runn for the money.

    No comparison between the two. AE is a great entry level dress shoe for every man. Carlos Santos is a far superior shoe in every way and for about the same price. CS wins this competition.

    First off, many thanks to you for wearing which ever uniform you wore for all of us. Very much appreciated!
    No question that those Carlos Santos are beautiful. I would like to see these shoes after roughly the same number of wears as the Allen Edmonds? I own several Allen Edmonds and want to try other brands, but having a narrow width I am concerned about fit and comfort. I was measured and fitted to a 9B at an Allen Edmonds store during a sale. I have never paid full price for their shoes. Kostas, Justin, Carmina and TLB among others all have very nice merchandise. Just afraid to step out of my comfort zone at $400. Thanks for the reviews!

      It was the Army and my privilege. I appreciate it.
      No experience with TLB yet but it seems all the Spanish made shoes run large. My JF, Cobbler Union and Carmina shoes are 10s. Santos' are 10.5. I would need a 10 in the monks tho. Most of the nicer shoes are elongated so you should be able to size down and look for the last shape that will give you the slim fit you need. The JF line from Justin is a great deal and a good place to start.

      hello Arthur, thank you for enjoying my shoes!
      I have many Santos shoes with over 1-2 years of wear so if you want to see pictures, just message me on my Instagram or via mail. I also own TLB Mallorca Artista and it is also miles better than Allen Edmonds. The problem is if you are such a narrow width it is difficult to impossible to fit properly in the European southern lasts. If you have your basic work shoes, instead of buying 2 more pairs of AE on sale, take a $400 good shoe from Europe it is totally worth it!

    Here a few better top (not the higher end, but still top) brands than AE: Crockett & Jones, Loake, Cheaney, Carmina; TLB M, Septieme Largeur, J. Fitzpatrick, and Cobbler Union. Those, in my opinion, are better than AE. Obviously there are other top notch shoemakers that are on the highest end of shoe making. Don’t l ow if the latter worth the money though.

    A shot in the dark since this is an old video: any tips to maintain the Carlos Santos soles? Such as any weatherproofing products etc? I'm heavily considering purchasing the same pair but I'm worried about the soles being damaged very easily, especially since I plan on using them as weekly drivers, wearing once or twice per week.

    • @eonreco1472
      @eonreco1472 2 года назад +1

      The soles are durable enough for daily wear. Of course the finish will wear off pretty quickly but I suggest at the very least you purchase toe plates because the toe will wear much faster than the rest of the sole. Locally, I had a shop install clear sole protectors on a pair of cobbler unions but they started to peel at the toe. Now that I think about it I may try having the toe plate installed after the clear sole protector. Make the purchase, you won't be disappointed.

      You condition, the bottom of the shoes, the same way you do the top. After the finish from the factory wears off, you can buy a liquid that you put on the bottom of the shoes that gives them some waterproofing element. That being said, as long as you have a couple of pairs of shoes to rotate, leather bottom shoes should last you a long period of time before they need to be re-crafted

      I've never really considered Wholecuts because I don't see myself wearing them much. However, that Crockett & Jones James model, released for the No Time To Die movie, has me swooning. It's the last shape that I love but the price I hate. Kostas from The Noble Shoe told me about the Alex model which is on the same 348 last. That's the only Wholecut I'm highly interested in.

    • @MisiuAcademy
      @MisiuAcademy 3 года назад +2

      not sure what you mean Steven. Unless you talk about EEE widths a lot of companies have E widths but their marketing is rubbish. The last of this oxford for example is based on 1300 clients of mine definitely an E width (like most of the Santos lasts). Carmina, Meermin have wider lasts. Crockett and Jones has E and EE etc. Certainly not aplenty but there are out there!

    • @MisiuAcademy
      @MisiuAcademy 3 года назад +1

      @@stevenjm12 that is more true sadly. In cases like these outside Allen Edmonds I would look at welted women's shoes actually. They often come in B/C widths.

    • @sartorialsuccess7171
      @sartorialsuccess7171  3 года назад +1

      I'd also focus more on the lasts that are offered if there aren't alot of width options. There can be quite a difference in fit based on the last shape and type of shoe.
