That was an interesting talk. I;ve been through the Mt. Washington Trolley Tunnel many times and didn';t there was an accident there. Thid is a good piece of local history we now know about. My grandmother was taken on a trolley to South Side Hospital and gave birth to my aunt.
I rode on PCC street cars many times through that tunnel in the 1960's and 1970's on visits to Pittsburgh. I recall that there was a speed restriction in the tunnel going down grade, inbound towards Carson Street and the Smithfield Street Bridge. And if my poor old memory serves me correctly, there was a safety stop at some point. I recall those things being strictly enforced. An operator never knew if a spotter was on the car.
