It's a reference to a Gene Kelly movie. He dances with a mouse. She was unusual to showcase her tap dancing but she's fabulous. The tap scene prior in the beginning of Straight Up shows it the best.

Hello Quay , back in the day music was the bomb . Paula Abdul was Janet Jackson’s choreographer. I think Paula was the first I ever saw tapped danced in a video. She has other videos Straight up, cold hearted, they way that’s love me. So does Janet Jackson

Mya can tap dance but outside of 'love is like woah' I can't recall her doing it in her videos. Maybe she does in her stage routines. She tours a lot.
If you like Paula's tap dancing she does a nice lil bit in her 'straight up' video which is a cool song too

I feel with all her fame she is still underrated . Very humble and deserves all her fame. To me she should have had the princess of pop title . All her songs were fantastic and besides all this such a dope dancer. I put my two sons in tap :)

Any performer wanting to be able to be a dancer in a stage musical or on Broadway, awards show, backup for musical artists stage shows, needs to to be able to dance nearly every style of dance from hip hip, ballroom, tap, contemporary, jazz etc. Training in all of these styles is a normal part a dancers skills. Not just a 'back in the day' thing.

Nope, people aren't versatile as they were back then. Artist back in the day were true artist in every since of the word. Definitely a missed era.
