Now I can see why her radiance and vivacity are so magnetic. There is absolutely nothing phony about her. She can be honest about hating her teammates, thinking her students are lazy, and thinking the Soviet regime acted wrongly, but it never comes across as bitter because she’s just such a fundamentally joyful person.

How utterly disgusting that he would ask her to do splits. OMG!

So what she said about Americans smiling---it turns out that Russians don't smile much---this is part of their culture. If you see a Russian smiling in public, it usually means they are crazy or something wrong with them. This is according to Natasha's Adventures www.youtube.com/@NatashasAdventures/videos

I think she was a fantastic gymnast but I notice that her routines were not really that difficult. I wonder how she would compare to today’s gymnastics standards.

Korbut flip is forbidden because it is too dangerous to execute it...maybe it could look simple for her joyful attitude but it wasn't easy at all. She brought gymnastic to the modern era thanks to her stunning new moves that no others tried before her.

You have to realize that the balance beam originally was pure wood with no springs and no leather padding like it has been since the 1984 L.A. Olympics. The floor has also changed since 1984. Originally the floor was much smaller and had no springs. So everything we see since Mary Lou in L.A. 1984 is thanks to the springs added to the floor. They also changed the vault springs and the vault shape itself into a bigger vault since 2001. The L.A. Olympics wanted the sweet TV ratings and $$$ so they added all those springs to the floor, balance beam (and leather padding) and vault to make them look flashier and better than how gymnastics was supposed to look originally before 1984.
The 1992 video where Nadia Comaneci meets Bela in his gym (for the first time since he defected to America in 1981) and Bela talks about all the new springs (and padded leather for the balance beam) added to the equipment was interesting. Nadia last competed in 1981 so all the springs was shocking to her and her commentary was very interesting like the whole purely wooden balance beam that she always worked with when she was competing. The L.A. Olympics completely screwed up gymnastics. It went from artistic and graceful to circus-style acrobats with the cheap springs added. Springs are like a trampoline and it makes what the newer gymnasts do so unimpressive looking back.

@@nogoodnameleft Thank you for this EXTREMELY enlightening info! Explains absolutely everything. No WAY could today's super-SUPER-athletic feats / moves the current gymnasts do - have been done: on such less "cushy" equipment such as we have now. 👉 A lot like the NFL? Late 1950s/early 1960s: They beefed up the gear that the players wear: so they could REALLY POUND THE F OUT OF each other !! 🤪🤑🤑🤑🤑😛😵😵‍💫😮😫😧😱 on the field. Before that: the gear was SO much more lightweight: and so it was far, far less the Gladiator Sport it is now, w/ way, WAY fewer injuries and WAY fewer, alas, brain concussions, eh? - Humans. We're jut mere mortals. Physically: I think far too many athletes - professional AND amateur: pay a very cruel price for the "Olympian," grandiose, massive Super-Power "heights" now expected as commonplace. i.e., THRILLS AND CHILLS (and o man, do we humans crave such, eh?): CAN and DO: cause ILL. Sometimes. -- Cheers to all, - VCH ❤☀💚🌳🌲🐸🐦☮

Totally disagree with your comments some of the things she done have since been banned because they are deemed to dangerous so where you get not complicated from is ridiculous

    • @Jeangrey567

By the standards of those days, they were highly difficult. Some of her moves you saw were and still are banned because they're dangerous. She made them look easy, but appearances are deceptive in this case.

Olga was great. She describes Communism just as it is. Communism is a horrible, horrible political, economic, cultural and religious system.
