Why sand off the natural protective outer glaze of the hoof , if is not a show horse ?

      Jeffery Schirm good question!
I try my best to only rasp as high as the point of origin of any distortion in the hoof wall.
If there was no distortion I’d never have to do it at all but unfortunately hooves distort as they grow. Not many horses have perfectly straight legs so invariably feet will distort in one way or another and NOT removing it during trimming results in far worse long term issues for the hooves AND joints higher up the limbs. As hooves grow long in one direction the hoof wall starts to act as a lever arm and actually starts to exaggerate itself.
Thankfully, so far in 15yrs I haven’t yet encountered one that’s had any major issues as a result of rasping the walls. Sure, you have to be careful not to over-rasp otherwise you can seriously structurally weaken the capsule. But in those situations, it’s often a trade-off between reducing the moment arm action of a hoof wall flare, and trying your best keep the hooves as strong as possible.
      Hope this helps!

Because it's part of the shoeing proces ,hooves don't only grow down they grow dish and wing, the outer Edge should match the shape of the hairline.

This guy does have a lot of technique but his only issue I can see is his nails are too high..

Nails to high??? There’s no such thing .... this guy is doing it right . It holds better high . Low nails break off the hoof worse
