The problem is that independent suspension, whilst more comfortable when going fast over bumps, is not as good for extreme off roading. For extreme off roading you want a solid axle to obtain optimal grib, with the opposite wheel always moving up or down with the same force opposite the other. This is also why the solid axle 8x8 trucks have won this competition pretty much every year. (Note the windscreen on the Merc)

I think a couple things to keep in mind is that I don't think this is exactly what these trucks are for. The are work horses meant to carry loads over terrain not quite this extreme. Just think about how easily a typical 18 wheeler can get stuck. I've seen only a couple inches of mud or snow completely incapacitate a typical truck like you'd see in the US. Also, some of the features are probably much larger than they look. Those truck are already huge and some of those rocks still look big. I give these drivers a lot of credit. I bet this is much harder than some of these commenters make it out to be.

Silky dirt, 15 tons, and 8 wheel drive means you'll just dig a hole and bury your truck... Fewer wheels, lighter weight, and tires with specific offroad traction means you'll go offroad and have fun, not bury your truck. I'm from the heart of offroad country.

4 axles, 8 super aggressive tires, 4 lockers, and yet it seems to be spinning helplessly a lot of the time.
Weight and not perfect approach angle contributes though it is a great truck for hauling stuff off road.
no spotters, straight-up boulder fields, near-vertical climbs from standing starts, BACKING UP those same inclines, bulldozing dirt... this is near-impossible stuff with ANY vehicle, much less an 8x8 truck
Over weight plus some of the inclines are very steep not many vehicles can make it up look at the American hill climbing they are much smaller plus more power and better tires and still have trouble on alot of the hills
Tatra is one of the best trucks. The front design makes it primitive looking.

I'm a proponent of the K.I.S.S. method, so I like the solid axle leaf sprung trucks my self. Less moving parts to break.

I think the MB at 3:50 tried to shovel the sand to the left side of the vehicle so he wouldn't slide down that hill and hit the pole.

It's an obstacle course. Try re-watching the video while observing that they are avoiding hitting the stakes as much as possible while going through others just slightly wider than the vehicle. They're plowing dirt in order to make room to turn around and make it through the next set of stakes.
Myself, I was rather impressed by the skill of many of these drivers to maneuver such a massive vehicle through quite a tight course.
It’s uncomfortable 😣 to watch how they do damage to the underside of the vehicle when driving above loose boulders.

Those little wooden planks sticking from ground are gates they have to cleanly drive thru if they touch them they get penalties.
To get stuck as quickly as possible. Bonus points for taking out the diff cases on big rocks.

Mercedes is a great track, but the elk is sitting at the wheel! at times it seems that he purposefully travels so stupidly so that the Tatra in the eyes of the people would look like a cool truck!

It has hub reduction gearboxes in each hub- reverses the direction of rotation.

In my opinion, this is a competition of idiocy.....the vehicles need larger wheels, or tracks like buldozer, period. Problem solved....This reminds me of trying to cut down redwoods with pocket knife.

I wonder if a torque converter type powershift transmission would be a help. Allison make some great powershift transmissions that would easily stand up to this type of punishment. At the least it would eliminate engine stalling. Perhaps it's a rule in this competition to use a manual transmission?

its not about how many wheels you got a 4 wheel drive with 1200 hp and right gearing would make this look easy
Those crazy tube frame high hp rock crawling buggies would blast right through this course, but the point is, can you get a truck through the coarse.
