It's not the end of the year yet Chai. But I'd like to get in early and thnk you for all your wonderful content over the last 12 months. You've really found a niche with your pleasant and open interviews. A little window into peoples lives for a brief nano second. I love Chiang Mai and my family can't wait to get back there in December. All the best from Melbourne, OZ.

It really depends on how much you move during your travels too. The more places you visit the more you spend as you pay for buses, trains and flights. Also depends on how many activities you do of course. Spend longer in one place and you’re money will last longer. 😊
Some years ago we travelled (hitchhiked) Thailand for 5 months and then hitchhiked back to Europe (17 countries) for another 5 months and all in all between two people we spent only 4000 €. In total so we averaged on 6-7 € a day per person over the 10 months. We stayed in guesthouses, with locals, camped and in Thailand we volunteered a bit here and there.
We didn’t spend much but probably experienced more than most 😂
We don’t travel that cheaply now as we work on the road now and need more comfort but we still spend less than most people we meet 😅

Used to be a lot easier about 3 years ago to maintain a budget of 2000Baht per day. Nowadays one have to be a lot smarter or be Dutch to get by on 30 Euros. Hmmm....a holiday is MUCH more expensive than a regular lifestyle.
I lived on roughly $1100 or so per month, but having lived there and knowing where to go and how to get around (and aware of actual pricing), I bet I could be a visitor/tourist for much less. Perhaps $800, give or take. It helps that the USD to Baht has improved since then AND that I also don't drink alcohol.

    • @Chai_Travel

1,200 baht a day excluding accommodation sounds about right champ and most likely goes a long way in Chiang Mai compared to Pattaya and Phuket where the prices of nights out around bars would stretch the budget beyond that. No doubt eating at street stalls and buying the beers out of the 7eleven stores would be ideal, especially for expats there and keep the bank balance under some sort of control. A lot depends on the price of guided tours and the daily expense of hiring a motor cycle for the tourist. I guess it is as expensive as you want to make it and one of those sayings are that if one wants to they can 'live off the smell of an oily rag' Cheers champ. Another excellent video!! 🤩

Haha perfect mate! We also like to not use the 7/11 all the time (I should have mentioned that). It’s better to support local stores and the even sometimes cheaper:) 1.200 Per day 😎 sound like there won’t be any worries. Cheers🙏🏼🏆

So nice to hear the guy say what he does to safe money, he only oders food in restaurans and no water so he save 2 dollars per meal. Ow wow, the real local restaurants have free water, and if you order a small bottle it will be 10 or 20 bath max so half a dollar. So he sales just 1 to 2 dollars a day, yes maybe 30 to 60 a month so it will give you another day or 2 to spend for food. But eat at the local restaurants where the water is free you will.save more on the food also. Most dishes are between 30 to 50 bath. Sorry i am rambling mate, back on topic. 50 USD is easy to do for 1 person, i did it with 2 persons when you get a hotel room between 250 to 500 bath amd eat local. And maybe you have cash ebough for a cold beer from seven in the evening 😉
Well as always Chai, C Ya in the next one, cheers 🙌🍻

    I'm glad I don't get asked about a budget - I wouldn't have a clue.
We mostly stay at home (in Pai), or with family in Mae Hong Son/Mae Sariang. In Chiang Mai we occasionally stay with some neices, but more often at a little family-run hotel where we have become friends with the owners - so that isn't expensive. We don't go to bars or fancy restaurants, so those bills stay low. We can usually feed both of us for around 600฿ a day.
Of course, I also get hit for the running costs of the Vigo (Hilux) - and guess when the servicing gets done . . . tyres and new brake pads aren't stupidly expensive, however. I'll usually also have around 1 - 2000 Euros worth of bits to buy for the house as well. No wonder I'm looking forward to the full-time move when I won't have the UK costs to deal with, and can spread the spending out over the whole year 😂🤪

Nice one Sameebah 😁 it’s so nice to have family or friends from here’s. 600 baht per day sounds about right if you’re just going around for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Another great video Chai. Love Chiang Mai (and Chiang Rai to be honest, which gets a lot less coverage but is brilliant and Chiang Khong up on the Mekong which has killer northern style Khao Soi - delicious). I found that around $50/day not including hotel or hostel is oceans when I went back to Thailand for 3 months over the summer. Planning to be back in Thailand (probably mostly the south and Malaysia and Indonesia) end of December for a chunk of next year - if I see you in Chiang Mai I'll come over for a chat. Living here I read/have met other expats who spend 100K baht ($2800) and up ! These expats have huge condos or houses and have also spent millions of baht on cars and motorcycles. (many have 2-3 pensions or several incomes) I find 40 - 50K a month is easy, yet that does not include rent as I own a condo.
