A lot of the movie was filmed outside of Calgary, I believe on the Stoney reserve. Chief Dan George became one of my heroes at that time and after that I looked forward to his address to native Canadians every New Years. Dustin Hoffman’s best role ever and the first time you got to see manifest destiny looking east. An honest look at genocide and tragedy that had you laughing your sides off half the time. It shows the true beauty of the Native American culture, or more closely, that of the plains Indians after the horse and before white man. Every North American owes it to themselves to see this film.

I read the book before the movie came out, reread the book after l watched the movie. Both are excellent, its been said it was the first honest portrayal of those times to come out of Hollywood.
