  • Slaves of Dubai (2012): In this undercover report, the BBC' s Ben Anderson infiltrates a community of expatriate workers in Dubai and reveals how the jewel of the Arab world is almost entirely built upon imported slave labour. Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: www.youtube.com...
This is the dark side of Dubai that tourists never see, where scores of workers are lured from Bangladesh with promises of a better life. As soon as they land, their passports are confiscated and they're paid less than half of what they were promised. Risking severe punishment by authorities, Ben Anderson exposes their squalid living conditions, where rivers of sewage flow between living quarters and workers are forced to endure inhuman living conditions. Most of the companies have absolutely no regard for human life , says former hiring agent, Almass Padrdiwala. A few miles away, the glittering skyline of Dubai lures 1.1 million British visitors each year. For the workers who build this paradise, Dubai is a black hole with no means of escape. We have no hope for the future, we are helpless .

Having lived in Dubai for several years and having been in a relationship with a white girl, I've seen both sides of the equation. I am Indian by the way.
Your salary in Dubai is almost always tied to your nationality/race. Unless you are in a company that prides itself in being an equal opportunities style of employer, you will definitely get paid lesser than colleagues from more developed countries.
But this distinction doesn't just apply to brown vs. white or black vs. arab, etc. My girlfriend (Spanish) was at a director level position of a small startup. One of her subordinates was British. Subordinate was paid more than the director. It happens in Dubai.
Salary segregation in Dubai leads to racial segregation for the most part. Different people can afford to do different things. I'm not sure if these rough tier's apply for general salaries in Dubai but here's where you stand in the 'nationality pay scale':
    1. British/American
    2. Arab from Saudi/Oman/UAE/etc.
    3. Other Western Europeans (Germany/Portugal/France/etc.)
    4. Lebanese
    5. Malaysian/Thai/Other more developed Asian countries (Taiwan for example..)
    6. Filipino/Indian
    7. Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Syrian (country with any level of turmoil/desperation)
    8. African countries
I might have messed up some of the tier's above but this is pretty much how it works. Uncontrolled, unregulated capitalism. The basic rule in this entirely racist scheme appears to be that you can expect to be paid about twice of what you may earn in your own country. Hence, the economic development of where you come from greatly affects the final salary you may be able to negotiate.
Of course, as most Indians in Dubai are blue collar workers (they get treated very badly, by the way), you will pretty much be regarded as 'poor'. Even if you aren't. It's just a very prevalent stereotype in the arab world. White = Rich. Brown = Poor.
There are plenty of broad minded people in Dubai, no doubt about that at all. You'll be able to find friends who don't wear their race on their sleeves. You'll meet several people who will also look at you weird if you're brown and in a 'posh' place. You may also be denied entrance into some clubs, etc.
Dubai is racism at it's finest. There is no hidden racism in Dubai. Maybe that could be seen as a small positive. It's all blatant in your face, you suck because of your skin color kind of racism.
But you're asking about how it's like. If you can get past all the blatant racism, you'll earn a higher salary than India and may lead a good lifestyle. I would've definitely counted myself as upper middle class in Dubai but I would not go back there for a million dollars.
There were times where me and my girlfriend went out for dinner and the staff were all "Hello Ma'am, how are you today Ma'am ?" and I'd joke with her "What about Sir ?". Once at this restaurant called Fuddruckers where you order burgers and once they arrive you can go and fill up some toppings at a 'toppings bar' the lady came up and said "Ma'am you can now go and get some toppings". We were there, 5 Indian guys, and 1 white girl. I looked at my girlfriend and said "Baby, I guess you should pick up some toppings for us too". We all laughed and went to get toppings, but this is pretty much commonplace. There were times we even got sick of this kind of behavior. Once in Caribou Coffee I was there with my girlfriend and two other white ladies. I was standing right across the cash counter, waiting to order for everyone when the lady at the counter looked to my left (where the white people were sparkling in the sunlight, excuse my sarcasm) and said "Good afternoon Ma'am, what would you like to have ?"). My girlfriend got so annoyed she said "And good afternoon Sir, no ?". That shut her up.
Some people like to downplay racism in Dubai but having been with someone of a different race, I got to see it in a very blatant but technical A/B testing sort of way.
I've traveled and lived in about 40 countries. I've never been to a country more openly racist than the UAE so far. (I haven't lived in any other arab countries though..)
I have to add though that racial violence isn't a part of the equation at all. I never felt unsafe (well, brown people outnumber everyone else in Dubai..), or even, threatened in any way. For an Indian, you'll just have constant not-so-subtle 'reminders' that you are 'inferior'. If you can deal with that (and the millions of Indians in Dubai certainly seem to be able to deal with it..) then Dubai will be fine for you.

Asif Ahmed I am an asian accountant f and i can vouch for what you said about the salary. The HR grouped us by nationality it's disgusting 😂 i am far more competent than my arab counterpart but he gets paid more.

It's not about the passport. It's a out the skin color. Indian with a US or UK passport is not equal to a white American or a white Englishman.

Wow this is SO SO SO true. My dad has lived in Dubai since 1995 and had told me countless stories of blatant racism occuring in UAE, especially Dubai (we have lived in Sharjah and are currently living in Abu Dhabi it is much better here though). Even though we were are upper middle class just like you , one particular instance happened to me too , as me and one Arab lady were waiting for an elevator, she quickly got in, and tried to close it before I could enter. Then when I asked her why she had done that she basically said she "want to" go with "someone like me". And when I said if she's that adamant in her stance then why not wait for me to go , and she can catch the next elevator. But the Indian Watchman/caretaker of our apartment told me to "let it go" in Malayalam. It's so sad that even Indians ACCEPT their inferiority. By the way when this incident happened I was only 14.

Journalist : "We want to see if people are happy" is that OK ?
    Camp Boss: "NO, not OK"
This is an indication that something is very wrong ....
The misery that the Arabs are causing is abhorrent and everyone should write to their local politician to force those in charge to pay back all the money these workers are owed.
