I really don't know why I watch anyone else before you- I wasted about an hour going through other peoples turt and stuck in the same place. 10 min into your video and my issue is gone! Thank you for all your hard work putting these together!!!
GOD BLESS THE REX. I just (2/2023) decided to pull my system forward from Core to Scale...and SMB was driving me NUTS trying to figure out the entire ACL deal with SMB shares. Once you explained the groups thing..I found the issue and I was able to mount SMB shares on OSX. THANK YOU !!!!!
These 3 TrueNAS Scale tutorials have been a wonderful way to get started with the OS. I'm a little sad to see that this is the end of the playlist though. You're really good at explaining the different options in an understandable way!
Absolutely fantastic, it's so great when you follow along step by step with a tutorial and everything goes right, and it actually makes sense. Looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials, thank you.
Thanks. Excellent help. I am a noob and was really struggling. The TrueNas documentation is excelent, but for a complete novice it can be daunting. I was able to review your video multiple times, then go step by step with your video running and pausing and got my NAS up and running. It helps that your videos are well done, organized, and give pragmatic "defaults". This is exactly the help I needed. It doesn't hurt that you are easy on the eyes as well.
I love how you are explaining every step and what it does. I'm new to building nas servers especially on TrueNas Scale system and I would love to see more of this type videos, how to create groups, pools, how to create shared files/folders and how to create private, since truenas scale interface has changed recently. Thank you for all your effort making these videos for us.
Thank you so much for this, been searching through all of the TrueNAS forums and following other channel tutorials and so far this is the only one that's worked. Two whole days wasted (and just a little bit of hair, not that I have a great deal left), time for a beer!
Thanks so much! These are hugely helpful. I'm waiting for the last couple parts to come in to finish my first TrueNAS build. These configuration videos are a tremendous help. Much appreciated! J

THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was a little hard because my version looks different, but after one fail it actually worked. In the video I watched before I found yours was a guy telling me it´s a great idea to not create users or groups and just publishing my data to anyone in my network, I´m glad that your version is more secure and still easy to set up as beginner :D
Thank you for the walk through. Somehow I mangled my second TrueNAS scale installation, and you covered the missing piece in this video. I also learned that certain configuration problems you can't simply fix, you have to create a new share and delete the old one!
1:17 coming form windows, as I understand it a dataset is basically a folder. You will share this folder later, and the share name can be different than the folder name. Also just like windows, the permissions can be set on the share as well as on the folder/files. At this point in time, I prefer to set the permissions (ACL) on the files/folder rather than the share so I dont have to maintain 2 different set of permissions.
Great video, as always. How do I handle nested datasets in TrueNAS Scale? I've tried creating a dataset within another dataset, and it asks for ACL permissions. I grant the permissions to a user along with their corresponding dataset, but in addition to that dataset, another one with the same username is created. I'm having trouble understanding the concept of what's happening here.
it is kinda complicated- scattered around the places where it should be done, but once done and once you get the point, it is easy thanks to your video - thank you

Hi there, i am struggling to get a SMB share working with the Syncthingdata folder, it is inside of Syncthing Jail, it is possible to do so? Thanks in advance.
I tried TrueNAS, it worked fine with Mac OS X 10.13 (High Sierra), but I had problem with mounting it on my really old MacBook with Mac OS X 10.6.8. I figured that old mac cannot use newer SMB, so I activated legacy SMB. Then I was able to connect the server, but the shared folder was shown empty, despite the fact that I had uploaded some files there. I used the same login. Any ideas why?
I keep getting the error "TrueNAS server must be joined to Active Directory or have at least one local SMB user before creating an SMB share" any ides why ?
When trying to setup the SMB I keep getting "TrueNAS server must be joined to Active Directory or have at least one local SMB user before creating an SMB share" any thoughts?
Excellent video!! Couple questions.... Do you prefer this method to the "Use as Home Share Option" when setting up a user's credentials? Ex.) I have a folder in ds1 -> critical for users which is set as a Home Share which comes with predefined permissions. If so, how do you deal with read permissions from one user to the next with them being in the same group, is this done strictly by file permission ACLs by removing the group (700)?
Hi, thanks for the great tutorial! I've one question since this brings lots of confusion to users when creating ACL on smb shares, When creating the dataset you let ACL type as "inherit" but some people has been saying to use "SMB/NFSv4", what's your opinion about this? Thanks.
How much does the "Workgroup" setting in the SMB Services section (in newer TrueNAS versions than the video) matter? I wouldn't think it impacts much, but the default of "WORKGROUP" did seem to restrict access when one of my PCs was set to a localized workgroup (not "WORKGROUP")
Thanks for well explained tutorial! I'm using win11 and I had to use the server name (TrueNAS) not the ip address (192.168.0.15) at the very last step, so that i could get access to the share from windows "Add Network Drive"

I am running a epyc 7d12 on a supermicro h11 ssl-i,,, the cpu is running on the base clock of 1.1ghz full time, seems a little slow... even when i run cinebench or cpu-z
Its a great option for 99% of users. It can be 'slow' when you are working with 100GbE ethernet compared to other file systems, but thats really a specific edge case.
9:40 System Settings --> Services --> SMB --> NetBIOS Name ... I did need to change this as this is my second TrueNAS server on this network ... if my understanding is correct
My pool is running two 4tb nas drives that are fairly fast. ~200mbs they are configured in zfs as mirror. Sharing to a dataset in that pool from smb is running at around 20mbs. I think this is too slow for my needs. I wish the truenas gui supported copying files from an external usb device
Why would you edit the file system ACL and not the share level ACL? I'm in the process of researching TrueNAS for a deployment at the office and have found the share level ACL works as its intended.
File level ALC's are much better in my option. You get much better options and control. For share level I set it to everyone, then restrict all access in the file system ACL
