I am a home owner, but really enjoyed this. Now days it's just smart to be an informed home owner. Besides I love HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Darn, I wish I could have got in on this and asked about "hard start"/ "fast start" kits.

I'm a HVAC technician this goes out to all those HVAC contractors I've been in business 25 years I don't have the discipline to own my own company but I'm a really good technician just ask me how tell you. Lol instead of a class on HVAC we need a class on how to show contractors not to screw the general public on prices on HVAC equipment and controls it's almost aware the average homeowner can't afford to install a new AC because contractors overpriced everything take this to heart if you read this and you're a AC company owner teacher technicians a little bit better we're the ones who make your companies look good and you're the ones that make us look bad when you overpriced parts and equipment we're the ones that have to talk to the homeowners

Explaining the heat pumps really simple. And cooling you're transferring heat from the inside to the outside. In the heating mode that you are transferring the heat from the outside to the inside. When I do installations which I do on the side I work for a school district in HVAC, Iowa sell the most simple units that I can. I think I'll efficiency gas furnaces are a waste of money. I like the two speed heat pumps that have the Copeland compressor with the unloader solenoid in it it's very simple. The problem is some of these units on this episode is the expense of purchase and the expense of repairs. Babe really don't pay for themselves but in some of those places in the Northeast you must use a ductless split because of the construction of the older homes. Most of the my experience in New York have hot water baseboard so you're very limited what you can do on a retrofit and the ductless is the only thing you can use. It might even be worth to somebody with an oil heat home that with no natural gas is available to use that as a backup and try to heat a home with a ductless heat pump. But I always recommend if possible central heating cooling first if possible. I also put in 4-inch filters every time on one of my jobs. If I can't fit in a 4in I put in at least a 2-inch and then make sure there is no tools necessary. Too many 1 inch filters out there which causes a lot more static pressure.

Don't forget the DIY Arduino homegrown thermostat units now exist. A lot of people like opensource more than the standard units. Also hacking smart thermostats to not have to pay monthly service fees.

ToH is great but HomeServe is an absolutely abhorrent company. Paid for their full service after I got my new houes and everything was fine for the first year until the exhaust blower-motor went out. A very common and know issue with these Bryant Evolution 90i furnaces. Not only did we get denied the clam as according to HomeServe _"That's not a known issue."_ But they also had the gull to charge us twice for coming out to tell us that we are being denied as that's a " " " Service call " " " What exactly DO you do if not repair the number one _documented_ issue on, arguably the most important appliance in a Michigan home right before/ during winter.
So now, I get to deal with a 40° house for days while I scramble to find my own contractor that wont screw me or try to find a working part myself in a sea of used overpriced junk, even though I have an insurance program that supposedly takes care of such things. Especially when it's such an important thing as a heater in a MICHIGAN home.
Might work out for you, but from my experience even this, this best rated American home/appliance insurance company, is just a huge scam. If they wont fix a furnace in the peak winter what will they do?

You can avoid wrongful denials by insuring that your agents do not come from the automobile and healthcare insurance industries. Those people are trained to automatically deny coverage even when the claim is covered in the policy.
If you think I'm exaggerating, take the time to watch a few commercials by personal injury attorneys.
Oh by the way. If homeserve falls into the habit of denying valid claims, homeserve should expect to hear from one of those attorneys that decides he just wants to make a point of legal principal.
Personally, I think all insurance professionals should be thrown into prison for defrauding the public as that is exactly what they are practicing.

Most companies that are part of that scam program try to skip out on their technicians to. It's a total scam I won't work for a company that is part of it

Some of these high-efficiency models are so expensive they're not worth to the homeowner it will just cost too much money. The problem with those multi-zone ductless splits is if you have a refrigerant leak you lose everything and the Never installed in the way to be able to isolate a problem. Although it recommends Central over ductless if possible sometimes it is not possible you have to use the ductless

With all the storms and flooding, how can you protect your furnace investment in a basement that could get water?
