  • In this video, I find animal traps that were illegally set and abandoned. One was extremely dangerous and could have killed anyone who may have tried to look in a riverbank hole.
    WARNING: Some of the links I provide in the comment section to refute the false statements posted there are of dead or dying cats and dogs in traps.

    These traps do not hurt the animals unless they chew their leg off. The conibear does not "crush and slowly kill" it humanly snaps it's neck and kills it instantly. Fur trappers use foothold traps so they are designed to do as little damage as possible, the do not hurt they hold.

      it is true that the conibear traps are inhumane to the wrong sized animal such as a dog but if used for the intended species they are very humane.

    I agree with you beau, I would have done the same as you did. And I'm a trapper myself. Those sets were not properly tagged and not being checked, and I do not believe any fur bearing animals would be in season that time of year. It is not illegal to stop a out law or even worse an un-ethical human or "slob hunter". Everybody is trying to make you out as the bad guy here, I don't see it that way, I see you did the right thing..these ppl should be targeting the slob that has given every outdoorsman a bad name. Just cause there were traps set out along the river, that did not mean a ethical or responsible sportsman set them there. I commend you for putting a stop to the slobs activities before someone got hurt or another graphic picture of a animal got broadcasted. These ppl that are trying to thrash you..they should think before they do anything. We outdoorsmen do not protect those who jeopardize the sport, those slobs need stopped. Thank you beau. I respect and appreciate what you did.

    Please do not condemn the trap or Trappers. Traps ethically, legally and properly set are humane and safe. The guy who set those traps is despicable, a criminal and especially despised by all true Trappers.

    As has been said, these traps were left after the season was over. Which is illegal. Most states also have madatory laws that your traps be checked every 24 hours. So, again illegal. And no trap tags, again illegal. So yes, the person who left these was a poacher. Whether it was the person's intent or not, they are a poacher. When you trap outside of the laws set by the DNR in your state, you are a poacher. And yes, it is illegal for you to remove these traps. I understand your desire to make the area safe as well as your treasure hunting. However, it is illegal to remove these traps, tagged or not, out of season or not, regardless of your intenet. Report it to the DNR so they can be alerted to the situation and watch this area. Also, if you know the property owner, they should be informed. There is a reason we have DNR officers, it is their job to handle this situation. I am a trapper. A 4th generation trapper. And I am going to make it clear, a responsible trapper does NOT leave his traps, ever. With blazing (marking) your sets, keeping a detailed journal, and daily checks of your traps, you will not leave them behind.

    All those flaming Beau need to learn to brain. I am not anti hunting or anti trapping but it’s simple. Traps were not set within compliance with local laws. No tags, wrong way etc. Beau had two choices, leave them as is or remove them. Since no one was obviously checking them likely another animal would have died for nothing and that’s a massive waste. If he did NOT pick them up then that’s his fault for that. Yes he could report to DNR but in time that takes animal could have been killed. So he removed them, saved an animal and only one who lost anything was the illegal trapper. Also he videoed it and educated several thousand people. Should he have just sprung them and left them? Why would he??? The douchebag was trapping illegally (so a guy robs a store with an illegal gun you should let him have it back? LOL) The trapper forfeited the cost of the traps by acting illegally...did Beaus final act become illegal..depends on local law...but an animal is still alive that didnt need to die for nothing…lol I hope Beau takes the traps and welds them into some form of relic display box ha

      that is true a game warden should be contacted before removing a trap if it is not taged nor checked every 24hour. people may feel bad for the animal but it is a means of food and money and still done with as little pain as one can.

    conibear traps do not need to be placed underwater, and no they do not "suffocate" the animal, it breaks their neck and is almost an instantanious kill. i agree he should have tagged his traps, but dont go saying it suffocates the animal.

    As a trapper and professional, permitted/ licensed nuisance control business owner you did the right thing. You should turn those traps over to the local wildlife officer so they can try and catch the illegal trapper. Chances are they know who traps that creek and may have had complaints in the past.. That kind of stuff burns me up! Thank you for shining the light on this kind of illegal activity.

    This may be kind of late and I am refering to crab traps. When I worked inshore for the oil field in Louisiana the same rules applied. Traps are tagged and if not we would take them out of the water. I am not a tree hugger but there is no reason to leave traps about unmonitored killing animals. If you set the trap it is yours to take care of. Plus look at like this, if you are forgetting your traps this is a waste of a good animal when one is caught. Less for you and less for me. Crab traps are worse as they keep trapping unlike land based traps. My two cents.

    My niece's dog got caught in a coyote trap here in the state of Maine and the trap was right near the ATV trail she was walking the dogs on. Any kid could have gotten caught. Game warden came to them and gave them a ticket charging them with a crime. After a misunderstanding about the owner of the dog, not being able to read the name and address on the trap. Owner took it back to vehicle on the road to see if he could read it. Games Wardens in Maine said that they do not have to be readable. Or clearly labeled. What state is this where Beau Ouimette is.

    The foot in the trap was most likely a raccoon. They are the most notorious for chewing their feet off to get out of a trap although others have been known to do so. I know in my state we are required to check our traps every 24 hrs for footholds and in some spots every 48 hours for body grips. I am glad you took that trap. People like that give trappers a very bad rap.

    There are slobs in almost every endeavor. As an avid fisherman nothing irks me more than to find trotlines left set and not checked....dead turtles, rotted fish and some with rusty hooks. It is not only illegal it can be dangerous to unsuspecting people. We had a young local boy who drowned after falling in the water. Bad luck would have it he got caught in a submerged trotline and could not surface.....the line had been there for a long long time. Abide by the law or keep your slob ass at home.

    I've walked trap lines with cousins years ago. They would never leave a trap unattended. I didn't always like it when we found something alive, but they would "dispatch" the trapped animal as quickly and humanely as possible. That's the way it was when they were trapping anything that might endanger their farm animals, over 60 yrs ago.

    first of all, depending on where you live, a certain size conibear can be out of water. in the state of Indiana the biggest conibear on land is a #220, also in indy #330 conibear has to be under water. in the state of Wisconsin #160 conibear is the biggest land conibear. they are the best and most effective trap. the animals do not die slowly. its the fastest and most human trap out there. the coilspring trap with a muskrat foot in it, it was probably killed by another animal. most water animals kill muskrats.

    Big steel balls are normally used by rock mills in mines, the broken chunks of mineral are thrown on a rotating barrel with these balls and they're reduced to small pieces to extract whatever you're taking out of the rock.
    Copper mines here where I live use lots of them, you regularly see trucks with tons of these, going to the mine.
    They come in various sizes, from smaller than a golf ball to bigger than that one you found.
    Nice vids.

    When are trappers going to realize that defending "slob trappers" hurts trapping?
    It seems as if some trappers think anti trappers are the real enemy when it's really the slobs out in the woods that are hurting trapping.
    Last year slob trappers killed at least 20 dogs in MN but we've still got trappers fighting to keep using the sets that killed all those dogs. Anyone who disagrees is automatically labeled an "anti".
    Wake up MN trappers!

    instead of pulling the traps, you should have reported it to the local fish & wildlife. The traps belong to someone legal or not. I would be upset if someone messed with my traps. The trap owner could be in a bug out situation.

    .... the man/woman that set these traps may or may not have forgotten these two particular sets, OR they may have not been able to retrieve them due to weather. That never once crossed your mind. If you were not purposly trying to bash trapping then you would have mentioned this fact. I speak from experience that alot of trappers have more than several dozen sets out at a time. Also from experience, these traps get checked daily and are rarely forgotten.

    Ok, Sir, First off, The trapper that left those traps was in the wrong, there are bad trappers out there just like there are bad teachers, bad cooks, bad cops and so on. But I would like to request that you do research and learn some facts about the traps that you found.
    Let me try and help you, the first trap was a 220 conibear trap. It doesn't suffocate the animals. It is an instant kill trap, breaking the animal neck or back. That trap is humane. The second trap you found was a number 1 and 1/2 from the looks in the video could be a number 1. Yes it is a foot hold trap. In my state you have to check your traps every 24 hours.
    I would like to ask you this, if people didn't hunt and trap how would you control the animal population? Do you know by hunting and trapping it is better for the animals because it helps control their population. If you have an over population the animals food supply will go away, then you will have all kinds of issues, wildlife invading homes, trash cans, pet food. You will also have a rise in disease like rabies, distemper and so on. Your drinking water will become unsafe to drink (beavers).
    Now I understand that you ran across a bad trapper, a trapper like that also gets a bad name in the trapping community and other trappers will end up turning him in. All I ask is that you don't try and over DRAMATIZE a trap when you find it.

    • @bigbearhomestead
      @bigbearhomestead 10 лет назад

      ***** I guess you missed the part about leash laws and that there are different size conibear traps for different animals, of course a 110 or a 220 will not kill a large dog instantly but a 330 would. Trapper cannot be held responsible for people who are not responsible for their own animals.

  • @ryanwilson7993
    @ryanwilson7993 11 лет назад

    The trap needs to be strong so it kills the animal faster. I am a trapper and believe me trappers don't want the animal to die slowly; not just because it isn't humane but it causes damage to the fur so it isn't worth as much as a regular fur. And most leg hold traps have rubber jaws so it doesn't hurt the animal it just holds it in place

    i'm very perplexed by trapping and sport hunting. personally, i am very much an advocate for animal rights, but living in west virginia for the majority of my life along with my understanding of ecology has taught me that much like all apex predators we play a role in balancing out the ecosytem so while i would be morally at odds with killing an animal i haven't a problem with controlled culling or hunting for food so long as the person dispatching the animal is proficient enough to dispatch the animal quickly without causing gratuitous suffering (even the most skilled marksman can fuck up). to be perfectly honest i don't even have a problem with small scale poaching for food nor do i have an issue with sport hunting provided the carcass goes to someone that will eat it. i don't think we'd need poaching laws if sport hunting weren't so popular, but that's really neither here nor there. the problem i have with sport hunting and trapping is when they're done solely or profit or trophy, and the degree of suffering trapped animals experience along with the inability the trapper has over what his/her trap catches. i can accept trapping in a homesteading situation as hunting doesn't always yield results, consumes valuable calories, and is very time consuming. we are omnivorous and meat contains essential nutrients you can only find in certain flora so i couldn't justify expecting someone doing so for survival to go hungry just to prevent another animal from suffering. i know this is a lot of exposition here, but surely if you've read this far you'll understand it's necessity. i don't mind and would even welcome having an intellectual argument, but i do not want the people i want to hear from to read this, get defensive, and either dismiss my comment or assume that i'm some crazy peta member wanting to tell them how wrong they are.
    living in west virginia, i've come to know many outdoorsmen and hunters from all walks of life, but i find the topic to be difficult to broach. i know it's a stereotype in more ways then one, but the majority of people here that hunt tend to either be super religious, leading to a possibly heated argument about god and evolution or a stalemate at "god gave us dominion", or they hunt for food. there's a small problem with trophy poaching (every year there are at least 3 or 4 deer found shot dead and decapitated), but for the most part they either eat their kill or give the meat to someone who will, and, with the exception of a few assholes, do everything they can to ensure a quick clean kill. i'm sure there are trappers in the area but i either do not know them or do not know that they trap. given this channel's content and based on some of the comments, there are a decent amount of outdoorsmen that watch this channels content and this video in particular seems to attract a few looking to defend trapping so i figure i'll eventually get a response.
    if you trap for profit (can you even hunt for profit?), is it your main way of earning a living, a secondary means of cash flow, or a hobby with a benefit? as far as i'm aware the main draw of trapping is to provide pelts for the fur industry. i'm sorry, but i find the fur industry to be appalling and, barring instances unknown to myself in which natural fur must be used, feel that the practice of selling fur for fashion should be illegal. if we had done this sooner with the ivory trade i don't think we'd currently be at risk of losing the black rhino or african elephant. similarly, i think an exception could be made for furs from animals that have died from natural causes provided there's a way to verify this, otherwise i find it to be incredibly cruel to make an animal suffer just so some snooty bitch can have a pretty coat.
    if there wasn't any money to be made would you still trap, and if so why? how can you justify killing animals purely for pleasure? every experience you have while trapping, outside of killing and causing the suffering of an animal, can be had with a camera. the only difference being that you don't get a dead animal to take home. practically the same thing can be said of hunting for sport, but at least hunters have "the thrill of the hunt". while i find it to be a poor excuse, trappers can't even use it to excuse their activities.
    why do trappers use such seemingly primitive traps? i've read a few trappers in the comment claiming that the traps that aren't intended to kill aren't intended to maim either, but that isn't taking into account the mental suffering inflicted upon the animal or any harm it might do to it's self attempting to get free. this also says nothing of the animals that the traps aren't intended for. not only have i had friends who have had dogs severely injured by these devices, but my late wife spent the majority of her free time volunteering for a local animal rescue and i can't even count how many times we had heard of these devices injuring dogs and have seen images of the aftermath as well as photos and videos documenting the recovery of such injuries. i wouldn't have anywhere near the amount of disgust for the practice if it weren't for the traps used. i'd even be willing to bet that this rings true for the majority of animal rights advocates. are cage traps just too unreliable? yes, i know that traditional mouse traps are no less humane and often lead to a fairly agonizing death, but i don't agree with their use either and the chances of things that aren't mice are severely low. i feel that they're for people who want the mice gone but are either too lazy to be death's hand or are afraid they'll feel bad. i'm also aware that nature can be far crueler, but that's the circle of life. those animals hunt at great cost to themselves, especially when you begin talking about large predators, moreover they don't have an alternative and couldn't humanely kill if they wanted to. most importantly, the majority of predators have neither the ability to empathize or a concept of morality. there are some social animals that seem to exhibit these traits, but not even close to the degree that we do.
    i realize that to a certain degree i am a hypocrite. i eat meat and enjoy it despite knowing the cruelty that a lot of commercially farmed animals endure, and despite knowing that by supporting this industry i cannot morally hold myself above hunters and trappers that kill for fun and pleasure. i do feel that i have a slight advantage as i do so for nourishment and because for the time being the meat industry is a necessary evil (not excusing the horrible shit that happens) but it really is very slight.
    mostly, i just want to understand why you do what you do, how you feel about it, how you justify it, if you've ever even given it a second thought, and if you've ever put yourself in the place of your fellow animals that you trap and kill. this is NOT an attack, but a call to discussion between two worldviews that really misunderstand and misrepresent one another. hopefully i'll get at least one reply out of this and i haven't wasted an hour typing this out. if your still reading then at the very least i thank you for at least reading the whole thing before completely ignoring me :P

    Conibears are not meant to kill dogs, they are meant for smaller animals, fact is that sometimes dogs do get into them but its up to the trapper to make sure that he is setting where people don't have their pets running off a leash/put up signs to let people know that you are trapping an area so they have been warned. When it comes to using conibears to kill beavers/muskrats/otters/minks/WHATEVER, if you are using the proper trap for the targeted animal it is an instant death via broken neck

    Ya i use them too, i put a trail cam up on one and i caught a fox on land it didnt flinch, thats why you use the trap because it is a kill trap, so there is no suffering even in the equation. The only time there is, is when the trapper sets the trap wrong to the point where the trap fires once the target animal is too far into the trap to get a esential neck shot. Im not saying you are wrong but the trap is a kill trap, it may or may not be able to set on land, you just have to check state regs.

    first, if you look at the water line and the mud on the bank and the trap, the trap was under water at one time, so it was legal. Water goes up and down. It appears that the water was so high that the trap could have been lost due to the high water plus tags get torn off, and you are assuming that they broke the law. You also are stealing the trap??? Isn't that wrong too?

    Good job pulling that trap Beau. No tag and way out of season. It should not be there. I trapped for years and there is a responsibility of hunters/trappers to check and pull these. The law states you must check them every calendar day. Maryland is 8 in max opening for Conibear, Virginia is 7.5 in and Delaware is 5in.
    It's not fun losing a dogs leg to these when you are swimming, think they should all be picked up.

    I'm not trying to be offensive to anyone but dogs getting in traps are most likely going to severely wound the dog and possibly kill it but, traps like that aren't intended to be set by off big game animals or dogs more so smaller animals like raccoons beaver opossum so on. But, it was a horrible misuse of trapping to not put a tag on the trap

    Auqachigger The traps that had a foot in it was disgusting as a trapper those guys give the rest of us a bad name... Not sure what state you are in but in my state on your own land(and water that touches it) you can trap without tagging the trap, you can trap all year long. And the conabear that you were so nice to add a FALSE statement on are not made to suffocate slowly as you say, when used properly for the target animal they kill very fast by breaking the spine. Like i said when used properly. Im not defending that scumbag. Just bringing to light that your lack of knowledge confuses others about what is true, and you may have done multiple illegal things as well, so everybody is allowed there opinion, but don't put out false info to support and misguide others! And if you illegally STOLE those traps from a landowner and want to have any integrity, Return the traps to the owner and show your local warden what that unethical trapper was doing! The warden may give you a fine for tampering with them and taking them but you keep saying he broke the law so if you really want to be the bigger man turn yourself in to!!!

    • @chadhunts6202
      @chadhunts6202 8 лет назад +1

      +Aquachigger calm down, you should go through a good trapping course and learn about them... instant kill traps are more humane than how a wolf kills a deer and foot hold traps, when used properly will not break the skin much less the bone... if those are the laws in your state then you are right the trapper was a pos, my comment was not false tho I said in my state a landowner can do some of what you stated. sorry if I offended you was never my intention, but as far as trapping you make some incorrect statements about the traps. I've never personally set a trap I haven't put my own hand in first so I know it will not break a bone so I can release animals that are small or that were caught accidentally mostly dogs and cats... your broad statement about trapping is not correct tho. When done right it's more humane than nature most of the time. I will give you that a lot of trappers don't do the right things but please don't put all trappers in that catagory as some of us do it the right way!

    • @aliesmale
      @aliesmale 8 лет назад +1

      If someone is using illegal and in-humane traps that makes it okay to bash their flawed logic but not all traps are in-humane, infact animals will leave their legs behind sometimes so they can get away and trappers commonly put their fingers in traps just to show the design of the trap. It's very simple, most traps are made to trap and not injure animals. Look up "putting fingers in a trap" and you will know what I'm talking about If you don't believe me than put your fingers in a trap and you'll be fine (Just as long as the traps don't have teeth on them or if they are not Conibears)

    Not everybody can afford permits. They need to feed their family.
    If need be, I will trap or hunt illegal to feed my family .
    If I catch someone messing with my traps, they will have a very bad day.
    If you want to talk about traps or hunting, go after trophy hunting & traping. They do not do it for food.

    Depending on the state's regulations, body gripping traps are illegal on land. Some states require that they be partially or fully submerged, some have limits on what size you can use on land or in the water, and depending on the state you are required to check traps every 24 hours. As an ethical trapper, I make an effort to check my traps on a regular basis to prevent the animal from being left for too long, theft, and to make sure that everything is functioning properly. In the state of Alaska, it is written in the regulations that it is against the law to block or restrict a hunter/trapper from pursuing game; which also means tampering or removing traps. There are SO MANY cases where people have interfered with outdoor activities, simply because they either don't believe in hunting or trapping, or because they are concerned about the "poor little animals". Some people don't seem concerned about the "cute little critter", until their cattle are being eaten, there is a wild animal chewing on their pet, or their property is being destroyed by Mother Natures little darlings....

    First I enjoy your metal detecting videos. But as a long time trapper I'm not so sure you found a "trapper's" equipment. The Conibear trap is either dipped, dyed or painted. The trap you found is in near new condition and not rusted (so it hasn't been there long). Next the Conibears are most commonly staked thru the spring eyes to keep the animal from pushing it over. While this on has a "Coni-mount" it still would be staked. Next there is no tie down chain. Even with the Conimount you would still need to secure it. Lastly, any experienced trapper would use sticks or rocks to "funnel" the animal into the trap. This is not done and would leave plenty of room for the animal to simple avoid the trap. So……either this is a hoax or it is was set by some idiot trying to act like a mountain man. And you are way off on the "this is an expensive trap" part. A 160 Coni (this trap) sell for $80 per dozen. That is part of the appeal. As far as "not instant kill" again not accurate. If it doesn't break the animals neck (usually small animals like mink or muskrat) then it kills quickly like

    We've already have gone rounds on the fact the person could be dead. But if you feel the need to slander this person without knowing anything feel free.
    And lastly. We've also already established these sets were left for whatever reason. A poacher wouldn't leave these as you've already stayed the cost alone is worth as much or more as your Potomac river fur bearers.
    We've also easily established your high water mark and the reality that these traps were put out prior likely to a change in water flow the simple fact of stating these traps were placed out of water to begin with would and could easily fall under hunter /trapper harassment laws, illegal or not your online video and following slander of said user is liable in court !
    It is also considered slander in a report. (Written ). Along with this being an oral video . A sort of double wammy .
    I won't stick up for a poacher! But I also know better to point at someone and cry wolf before I have all the details.
