Marcus Licinius Crassus being supposedly the richest man in Rome was only 2nd in incompetence to Quintus Servilius Caepio who got 80 thousand odd Romans dead to Gaul's.
Gaius Cassius Longinus the leader in the plot that killed Julius Caesar was at the battle of Carrhae with both Crassus & his son though Gaius Cassius Longinus survived to continue being a drain on Rome for another decade still.
Gaius Cassius Longinus & those he kept in his company were both inept & or corrupt among some of the most detestable rich gits that were incapable of doing anything right!
Remind me of our Toffs in British parliament that got their position from birth rather then merit or ability.

Well, he did try to adapt his force to counter the all-cavalry enemy army, by forming it into a box so they couldn't be outflanked or shot in the back, and in that aspect it did work. I *guess* marching off into the open desert to chase after an all-cavalry enemy with a mostly heavy infantry army counts as trying to take the initiative but that was imo his worst mistake.

    On Parthian drip:
“All their companies clad in iron, and all parts of their bodies were covered with thick plates, so fitted that the stiff joints conformed with those of their limbs; and forms of the human faces were so skillfully fitted to their heads, that since their entire bodies were covered with metal, arrows that fell upon them could lodge only where they could see a little through tiny openings opposite the pupil of the eye, or where through the tips of their noses they were able to get a little breath. The Persians opposed us serried bands of mail-clad horsemen in such close order that the gleam of moving bodies covered with closely fitting plates of iron dazzled the eyes of those who looked upon them, while the whole throng of horses was protected by coverings of leather.”

This is a common misconception for those not acquainted with Arsacid political history and the violent factionalist tendencies between royal claimants and the nobility.
Surenas was the kingmaker of his time and a long time guarantor of Orodes from the first internecine before the exile of Mithradates where the latter sought the succors of Aulus Gabinius, the governor in chief of Syria.
Surenas was already a prominent figure by the time of the capture of Seleucia, given credit to heroic deeds few were accorded, no less to a young man of less than 30 years of age. The triumph at Carrhae, which far exceeded expectations of Orodes II, became a cause for alarm once the euphoria had settled.
One, with Crassus dead, and no authoritative replacement in Antioch, there would be no settlement for peace. Meaning the war would continue. The empire had just come out of a dangerous and damaging internecine and Orodes had little appetite to pursue the conflict out of caution.
Second, Orodes' position on the throne was not secure and made exceedingly more dependent on the favours of Surenas - Already a powerful force, and likely much more enthusiastic about pursuing the longstanding Parthian goal of taking Syria. Having already owed his crown and the destruction of a Roman enemy threatening the empire, Orodes was probably conscious of his weak position. After all, Surenas could have felt emboldened enough to take a shot at removing Orodes like he had dislodged Mithradates during the first internecine. This is the dilemma of tables turning too quickly.
Surenas was therefore disposed of. Not out of jealousy or pettiness. Out of cynical calculation and fully accounting for the consequences of subsequent contracts of trust between the royal Arsacids and their magnate allies, from the houses Suren-Pahlaw, Mihran and Karen-Pahlaw. It is also possible that this grim tactic was meant to curb future kingmaking from an ambitious nobility (It didn't work, but we know this in hindsight).
Orodes would continue to rule for about 15 more years - Many of those, marred by intrigues of his princelings and nobles, Pacorus and Phraates, and separately Ornodapates, at the court of Ctesiphon.

Rome originally was not going to let this go. Julius Caesar's planned invasion of the Parthian Empire was to begin in 44 BC, He began a mass mobilization, of sixteen legions(He conquered Gaul with 4). But his assassination that year prevented the invasion from taking place.
The campaign was to start with the pacification of Dacia, followed by an invasion of the Parthian Empire.
Plutarch also claims that once Parthia had been subdued, the army was to continue to Scythia, then Germania, and finally back to Rome.

You could do something with Shah Agha Muhammad Khan Qajar, like how he got himself killed. "My two servants, you have angered me so! But because it is Friday, I will not execute you, giving you PLENTY OF TIME TO FORM A PLOT TO ASSASSINATE MY BY SATURDAY MORNING" - Shah Agha Qajar. I love that story. Like, that mistake gets repeated a lot in history, that's how the Chinese general Zhang Fei was killed, he ordered the execution of two subordinates, gave them a night to think their fate over, they broke out and assassinated him in his sleep.

    • @garystu9878
      @garystu9878 7 месяцев назад +13

At least some surviving Roman POWs from Carrhae were released in 20 BC (33 years after their capture) after Augustus’s peace treaty with Parthia that year, along with eagles that had been captured by the Parthians. However, many POWs apparently remained unaccounted for, and that’s where the theory that Romans went to China came from, although it has never been conclusively proven. It’s more likely that Roman POWs who survived were resettled in other parts of the Parthian Empire, mostly in what is today Turkmenistan.
