These are solid little power supplies. I have a nearly identical unit from R&L that has served me well. One thing to note is you will see these units with either a 12V cigarette lighter socket or 2 sets of power poles on the front panel. My R&L unit has the power poles which come in very handy in the shack.

One thing to keep of note is that the front ports (be it powerpoles or a "cigarette lighter" jack) are typically lower amperage, so you wouldn't want to power a base station rig, or cigarette lighter for that matter, via the front. I was looking into voltage adjustable desktop power supplies for electronics projects that also put out 30+amps to use with a radio(s) for eliminating clutter in my shack/electronics bench setup. Many of the more affordable ones don't have the offset function, and are not designed for rag chewing. It would be cool to run one power supply though... If anybody is running a setup such as I described, I'd be interested to know what supply you went with, and if you have noticed any noise issues, both RFI and fan noise. It's probably best just to use two anyway, just incase I had the voltage set higher than 13.8, and powered on my rig, then again, circuit protection devices should prevent any damage. idk. was just a thought.

~$25 eBay ex-server e.g. HP HSTNS-PD18 750 watt (12V/62A!!!) power supply can be modified with one resistor to tweak output to 13.5V. RF quiet, being HP ex-server = super high quality. Far more amps capability than dollars cost. An option for those able.

Don't know what component has blown yet, but thankfully no radio equipment damaged, so must just cut straight off and not output any over voltage.. that's a plus. I have one that looks identical, has the same model number but sold under brand name Norjin. It does have noise. The worst of it is on 20m. The noise knob does move it out of the way. The only annoyance is that these bands of noise drift until the power supply warms up fully. Once it warms up the noise bands stop moving. I'm just powering a Hermes Lite 2 so more than adequate. I've never once heard the fan kick in.

One of the problems I have with that power supply is that it is fixed at 13.8V. Years ago, when I got my Jetstream JTPS31MB 30 amp switching power supply, which was being discontinued when I got it, it had an adjustable output. It had a detent at 13.8V, but could be turned up a little higher. When it was new, it actually put out 13.8V when it was set on 13.8V. But over time the output slowly dropped. Now, to get 13.8V out of it, I have to turn it up a bit beyond that. I also now wish I had gotten a 50 amp power supply, and will be getting one in the near future.

BUT....how long will the switching supply last? if switching supplies were quieter and lasted as long as a good linear, i would buy one in a heartbeat. the astron 35a linear supplies will last 20+ years with nearly continuous use. i don't think there is a switching supply out there that will last more than a couple years of continuous use, if that. so, in the long run, linear is $100 to $150 more expensive, but will last maybe 5x's or more than a switching supply. so, it is a no-brainer to go linear. portability would be the only reason i would use a switching supply. i'd get a good one like the one you have here, but it would not be a continuous use supply. field work, POTA, SOTA...stuff like that only. the total cost of ownership of a good linear unit is actually cheaper than a $97 switching supply. just my two cents. 73.

I have a 6W Yaesu FT-818ND and a complete newbie so I don’t have a dedicated external power supply for it yet… is this power supply going to be ok if the 818 is the only load or will it be too hot for it..?

Yes, this will be a great power supply for the FT-818 - you can even add a tuner and an amplifier for 100w

@@temporarilyoffline Excellent, yes I've ordered one. I was shopping around awhile and whilst a couple available locally are a bit cheaper they don't have some of the protection features.

there is nothing like "too hot" power supply - for home QTH, at least 30 A capable power source is a must

There's nothing like good linear power supply. I know they are heavy, girls. You're just going to have to man up if you want quality, clean ( I'll say cleaner ) power. All power supplies are going to have some ripple. It's the nature of the beast. Also stop buying that Chinese junk that's poorly designed and made from low quality parts. Build a power supply yourself.

Or Norjin, or Sky Top Power, or TekPower - they are probably all made in the same factory.

I'm looking to grab a Retrevis RT95 / Anytone AT-778UV, it looks like it has a T connector, say I bought this power supply, are there cables out there that I can buy with a t connector on one and, and the ring loops to attach to the power supply? I'm a complete newb here and am out of my depth. With the ring attachments, does the back covers on those terminals screw off then you install them and tighten them?

Usually the posts on the power supply will screw off and you can put these on. You have a 99% chance of making it work out of the box. If they don't fit, you have 2 options: 1. Cut them off and strip back the wire and wrap it around the posts or 2. Crimp on your choice of a better end. Welcome to the hobby!
