Everything You Need To Know About The Arizona Teacher Walkout (HBO)

  • On Thursday, teachers in Colorado and Arizona joined the wave of educators protesting across the country against insufficient funding - for both public schools and public school teachers.
    The simultaneous walkouts echo similar protests in West Virginia and Oklahoma, and they stem from similar gripes that plague most public school systems across the United States.
    But there are differences too. In Arizona, the movement is more political than in previous walkouts. And its leadership is less experienced.
    VICE News' Roberto Ferdman traveled to Arizona, where he spent time with Noah Karvelis, a 23-year-old music teacher, who quickly became one of the national education movement’s most unlikely leaders in the span of just a few months.
    "I truthfully never thought it would catch on, I thought I would be lucky if I could get just my campus to participate in it. But it grew. And it became a statewide movement," Karvelis said. "We put out five demands, and basically the demands focus on two really central things: restoring these cuts that we've seen and increasing our per-people funding to the national median, and we're also demanding that educators are paid a competitive wage."
    The state said it would increase teachers' salaries by 20 percent over the next two years, but Karvelis explained that without a real funding source it was just an empty promise. And while they might be political amateurs, the teachers say they're holding out for a real offer - and they're hoping it will also benefit other underpaid colleagues like bus drivers and reading specialists.

I’m proud of them, and I support them fully and I’ll take as many extra days during summer vacation as needed for them to continue their protests.

    The legislature of Arizona needs to support then and give then the money!

    This is starting to prove that Sen. Bernie Sanders' economic message does INDEED resonate in Red States. When it is regarding your livelihood, all political factions listen to the person whose closest to their struggle. It is ironic that the teachers in West Virginia started something that showed standing up and fighting back DOES get you results. This was also Bernie's lasting message in 2016.
    It's long overdue for a strong viable 3rd political party that is based on working class economics.

    • @guillermorivas7819
      @guillermorivas7819 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! And West Virginia went heavily for Bernie Sanders during the primaries. Bernie also after the 2016 election went there, the people there concurred with his legislative proposals by 90%. When people are hurting, they're looking for security in good jobs and security with social programs that benefit everyone. West Virginia is a prime example of a state in disarray for years.
      Bernie Sanders offers real economic change with his proposals for everyone, not just the 1%.

    The real question should be, do the people on the "walk out/strike" arguing with the wrong people? Should they be mad at the school districts who pay the teachers salaries? Or the governments who fund the salaries through out each district?

    • @mossara7898
      @mossara7898 6 лет назад

      Allison Walker the district gets funding from the state. It gets some from federal and local sources too, but in this case it’s the state that’s lacking. If the district doesn’t get any funding, then the schools in that district don’t get any funding. So no, being angry with the district won’t do anything.

We spend millions on red tape and bureaucracy, money that should be going to students and teachers. Then, I'd offer the teachers an immediate 25% raise on the condition that tenure and teacher's unions are abolished. Reward the good teachers and fire the bad ones. Clean house, Arizona!

    • @queenb407

      Aerospace Cadet the teachers did get a raise. Mine was 5 percent. The governor promised 9 this year and then 5 next year and 5 the following year which he really can’t promise because a budget has to be voted on every year and he may not even be governor next year. They didn’t give it straight to the teachers. There are still a lot of questions for sure.

    • @aerospacecadet9781
      @aerospacecadet9781 6 лет назад

      Queen... did you get a raise after we approved Prop 301 and 123? That was a whole lot of money! I for one thought selling public land "for the children" was a terrible idea. And what did the voters get in return??? Teachers going on strike saying they didn't get a raise! That's on the administration not on the governor. And now Red for Ed (or Invest in ED) is trying to raise taxes on businesses! That's the lifeblood of a lot of people. This socialistic tax will CHASE businesses away. It will ruin the economy of Az. Do you also support that plan? Do you think of the ramifications of a plan like that when you support it? There's a reason AZ. schools are not like other states (that are democratic). Its because we don't want to be like those states. And here's a little secret that I'll tell you. If the teachers and the administration keep this up there is another fallback plan in the works that I guarantee some but not all of the teachers won't like. You want to find out what that plan is? Then just keep doing what you are doing. Follow your socialist leaders off the cliff. Anybody that has an ounce of common sense will take what has been offered and STOP COMPLAINING! The people are getting sick of it.

    • @queenb407
      @queenb407 6 лет назад

      Aerospace Cadet prop 301 was about $1,500 and 123 I don’t remember getting anything for that. Maybe that’s where our 1% raise came from? I actually don’t know, so it definitely wasn’t significant. You heard how much teachers make. Are you saying those salaries are fair? Are you ok with teachers leaving Arizona by the truck loads because of pay? You spoke about businesses coming here. Well we need educated young people to work in these businesses if they do come. Everything starts with education. Why wouldn’t a parent want the best teacher money can buy for their child? I know I do. I’m not complaining, it is what it is, I’m just trying to make sure you know the facts. No teacher got the 20% that’s on the TV. That’s all I’m trying to convey.

    Teachers dont value kids individually as much, which is why they can see walking out on teaching them and making them more productive people in society just to demand more pay as a noble deed. Im not gonna argue that *good* teachers dont deserve to be paid accordingly, but Arizona's school system is basura and how much money teachers make doesnt even begin to scratch the surface of what makes az schools so bad, nor will it be any solution.
    A simple program that allows teachers to be reimbursed for funds spent on school supplies could have been an easy fix if teachers were complaining about having to buy supplies.

    • @arcticwulf5796

      dtz1586 wages havent risen in decades and the lack of funding has increased group sized to a limit one teacher can't value students individually. A person can't be expected to know 300 students and give the attention they deserve and require. Increase funding, smaller class sizes and better pay so a teacher doesn't have to work 2 extra jobs just to support his/her family.

      We live in the age of information and these people want a raise?! They simply have been replaced by machines.
      I'm not a Russian, i learned more online in 6 months than 15 years in public school. I was never taught how to file my taxes or finance a house. Sure i learned basic math and reading but that was all before the 3rd grade.

    Teachers, with their summers off, full medical, dental, vision benefits for life. Pension for life. Almost zero chance of ever being fired or laid off no matter the economic conditions. Pretty good gig. That's why it doesn't pay all that much. But they knew this going into it, right? Now they want an immediate 20% raise, guaranteed salary, guaranteed annual raises regardless of economic conditions. And they want increases for all support staff as well (janitor, cafeteria workers, teacher aids, bus drivers, front office personnel). Wow, where do I sign up for that? Let them try to find that deal in the public sector. So, the Governor offers them a 20% increase by 2020, but it's not good enough. They want their demands met, and if they don't get them, they will refuse to teach. Kids now have to stay home. Many working parents have to use up sick days and vacation time to stay home with them. Teachers are being unreasonable. They should not be allowed to strike. Should be instant termination. If you don't like something about your job, go look for another one, like the rest of us have to do.

      My gym teacher would make you carry around paddle, to get to know it before you got swatted. The limit in our school was 3 paddle swats a day. I had like 15 one week. Would wear 3 pair of shorts and pants, but if they saw that they would hit you on thighs instead. My math teacher would take you out in Hall and slam you against locker if made joke in class. We even had teachers who would cut your hair if thought too long. And hit your hands with ruler, make you stand in corner with your nose in corner....

    Have teachers forgot that they live in a capitalist society? Do they think that only the people in their sector are struggling? Modern day teaching has become a bubble... its about to burst. Respect to the teachers who truly care but the rest are in it for the money and status (they think highly of themselves)

    • @adammclean3792
      @adammclean3792 6 лет назад

      That's not true at all. Teachers rejected the first deal from Gov Ducey, which included a 20% raise for teachers, principally because it did nothing for support staff and didn't restore funding to public education. These teachers predominantly make mediocre wages and most say they are striking for their schools and for their students.
      And if you want to talk about people who only care about "money and status", I suggest you look more closely look at the executives and CEOs of the major corporations who have been paying less and less over the last several decades-and are the themselves the biggest recipients of welfare.
      Teachers know they're not the only ones struggling, and they know they live in a capitalist society. That is precisely the problem.

    Better pay will not get better educators. You know what better pay will get? More resumes for people that are motivated more for the pay, rather than student futures. You should be in your career because you love to do it and you believe the cause... making a living from it should be next in line. Give teachers fair wages, but don't go overboard

    I absolutely appreciate many teachers I’ve had throughout my life. However they get 4 months off every year. How can you demand a “competitive pay” when your job doesn’t require the same hours most full time jobs require? I believe they should get paid more but let’s not think they deserve huge pay raises. Percentage wise of course.

    • @patched8789
      @patched8789 6 лет назад +8

      It's all good No they work for a vast majority of it. Exams, new lessons on the course, HR work like new teachers etc. And even if they DON'T work, that still doesn't justify being underpaid. Most teachers work for beyond there hourly rate, marking papers and prepping lessons, they work faaaaar more thennyiu think.

    • @itsallgood5314
      @itsallgood5314 6 лет назад

      Patched 87 alright let’s say they work another months worth. That brings them up to 9 and half months of full time work. Still not enough for me to believe they should be paid as much as other professions. Like I said before. Give them a raise but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

      some states also require teachers to have a certain amount of hours to go back to take college classes over a set amount of time too, it's so that they don't just get their degrees and forget anything academia says in the amount of time since they've graduated

    We need to reorganize our educational system why are we still using the same method that was used in the 1700s when this country was founded this is the age of the internet computers kids can be educated at home or at computer centers teachers are not required anymore only the best of the best teachers can be used on the internet to teach thousands of kids at the same time this will reduced cost to the taxpayers and provide better education for the children then what is going on now too many distractions in the classroom too many incompetent teachers in the classroom the savings will be tremendous no large schools with all their maintenance fees none of these pension plans for retired teachers will be necessary the taxpayers will find relief the kids will find a better education and we will become a better Nation

      Vile Crocodile Privatisation simply doesn't work in every field. And educating everybody increases the overall benefits for the entire society. Privatisation leads to only those who can afford it can get their average children into better jobs and companies even if there were more gifted but poor students out there. Making sure everybody has a fair chance means the best rise to the top and not just the ones with the money.
      Privation means there is a need to make a profit and it will always tend to a system that makes the most money and not the best results. How about making the schools compete for extra funds and still keep the baseline high. Wasn't long ago a billion got added to the military, that vould have made sure everybody got the education they deserve if they work for it.

Hell no were will it come from I don’t think just because teachers dream to become what they are dose not mean we pay them more they need to earn it it may be hard to hear but it’s the truth just because you need the money dose not mean you suffer the consequences

    Chicken-Hawk politics. Ducey's banking on your short-term memory. If he was always on the side of the teachers would #redfored have escalated to the scale that it is? And why did Ducey offer the teacher 1% raise compared to the 20% they're asking for. Isn't that a slap in the face? Like they're really out there for 1%. Before #Redfored grew to have massive demonstrations about 50 of them picketed a radio station he was giving an interview and he slipped out the back door. If he was "always" on the side of the teachers why didn't he use the front door? And de-escalate the situation? He was always on the side of the teacher until someone whispered in his ear that it's an election year. Then magically 20% and let's run a COMPLETELY misleading campaign commercial that's the complete opposite of what actually happened. Then go on 3TV and give a couple interview. This is a mad scramble of a man that's desperately trying to keep his job. I hope. I hope. I hope they replace your ass. NO ARIZONA TELEVISION STATION IS GOING TO REPORT THAT TRUTH. Especially 3TV they might as well be FOX NEWS they way they cater to the Republican party

    Have a hard time giving “teachers” more pay when’s it’s really a part time job when you look at how much they work including school breaks and paid days off. Also I personally felt teachers don’t teach anymore they sit behind their desks and slap a packet down and tell students to do it. Or tell students to read out of the textbooks to learn. That’s not being a teacher, that’s an overpaid nanny.

      My mother is a teacher, she was head of a department for a time too. She would literally spend all her evening marking homework, she'd comb through tests to make sure the questions were suitable, she spent a lot of summers in the school going over the course and the new teachers.
      Stop trying to downplay how many hours they work. Just because there's a summer break doesn't mean it's a full time and thankless job
