Actually Shan Yu is the only character in the entire movie who doesn't question the fact that Mulan is a woman or that she was able to do what she did. He simply recognized her as "the solider of the mountain" the Huns as a culture had way more respect and rights for their women. Many of them where warriors.
Since this movie came out, I've always gave Mulan the title "The Soldier of the Mountains" not from the mountains cuz to me Mulan represented a mountain she never backed or stand down plus it always sounds badass: Mulan "The Soldier of the Mountains"

This is the far superior version of the two Disney Mulans. With messaging that helps build character... You may not be born special, but through hard work you can become it. You can also overcome prejudices through actions.
Sooo much better than. "You're born perfect and everyone should learn from you. You've nothing to learn and can overcome anything with little work and bullheadedness. You are always right."

Hey girls, if you didn't notice it, Shan Yu isn't surprised to discover Mulan is a woman. That's because in his country, women can be soldiers.
Also, normally, she didn't have to cut her hair because all men have long hair, but in asian culture, cutting your hair means letthing your old life behind you

This was the very first film I ever saw on my own at the cinema, I went to the theatre initially with my older sister and her friend and he wanted to watch toy soldiers but I didn’t want to so I decided to go on my own lol my sister wished she had gone with me as she didn’t enjoy that film lol. So this movie has specail place in my heart.

The soundtrack for this movie is God tier plus it's crazy that the animation still holds up after all these years. Mulan and Moana have the same spirited grandmother

I heard that some people from the Chinese audience were unhappy with the hair cutting scene, because, apparently, the soldiers used to keep their hair long, and cutting it was a sacrilege, not what in some Western places people tend to think: a new beginning, a new self.
That was just in general across China. According to Confucius your body is a gift from your parents so you can't modify it in any way. So long hair and gross nails were the norm.
Fortunately, the live action version of mulan as she doesn’t cut her hair.

I never expected a reaction to my favorite movie growing up 😃 Mulan's trick with the rocket made her a badass who wiped out the invading army🏆But even it's a moment of victory, I always remember it when I'm losing at online games. I SUCK at rockets. Guns and sniping= fine but I C.A.N.'T. hit anyone when given a massive rocket launcher. Every time I hear Mushu shouting at me, "𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥! 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴 HE WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU"
Nice reaction, Viki & Lia. Mulan (1998) is one of the Disney movies that I grew up watching. I even had it on VHS, a Cantonese VCD, and on a 2-Disc Special Edition DVD.
Fun fact, Jackie Chan sang "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" in both Cantonese & Mandarin.

Not another word about her identity, just the warrior who was able to derail his plans unlike the others.

Well, honestly, every single disney movie from the 90's is a masterpiece on its own, anyway...and so this one just makes no exception about that, obviously, seems to me 🤷♂

Disney gets props for exploring generational trauma in Encanto but THIS is the original. Also on rewatch the ancestors are kinda assholes too, they were concerned how it would dishonour the family not even a little bit for her safety and they wanted the dragon to bring her back, not help her, luckily Mushu went instead ! But willing to celebrate once she proved everyone wrong as if they'd been rooting for her lol
I remember seeing this movie as a double feature with Small Soldiers. It was a good day 😅

The real historical of the Hun's and mulan was a scary-cool time. Mulan was one of the early few warrior women whom did what men do and the fight for rights for women freedom. I like the kid fantasy version of mulan than the history one. Also mulan's father raised her as a son while her other family members raised her as a girl. So she was a tomboy in short.
This version is actually a good representation of the Chinese-American historical experience. There are both eastern and western themes intermingled in the story. There really wasn't a "historical" Mulan, as it was a myth and there are multiple versions of the myth, influenced by different eras in Chinese history.

Mulan's mom barely spoke in this movie, even with her Husband she remained quiet. It was showing Mulan that she did not want to become like any other women in their society.

39:45 doesn't surprise me. Kabuki was preformed by men back in the ancient times. But I was Six years old when this came out and I didn't know about it until I was a little older.
Shan Yu is one of the better Disney villains. He is very competent leader, he is brutal, skillful. He is scary as what. My all time top Disney cartoon villains are Hades, Shan Yu, Scar and Rollo.
The actor is Miguel Ferrer from NCIS.

The original story is actually very heartbreaking in the myth mulan saves the country but the emperor tells her due to her service and beauty she will be his concubine and so she fled back home but due to how long the war was by the time she arrived her father was long dead so in her grief and despair she killed herself
