bold statement, playing it now and have never beaten it before. So far its excellent. I hate the delay into battle though, I have missed so many jumps because of this. I honestly knock a damn point off it for that lol. Music is amazing and story and characters are pretty great so far :)

      my profile says it too.
Xenogears is a fucking master piece. it has so much potential given that this game was rushed in its 2nd disc because the fund was transferred to FF7, Squaresoft was in a brink of bankruptcy before and had to choose between Xenogears or FF7. Sadly, we know the answer it was FF7.
      either way, Squaresoft won though.

true, Funny thing is I bought it when it came out and I beat it but found it very complicated in terms of story, writing style, crafting and puzzles etc but really enjoyed it nontheless for the cool combat and atmosphere and characters etc. I was about 12 at the time. Years later in 2015 I decided to finish it again but now I was much older of course and could get a much better grasp of the story and characters and crafting. I genuinely enjoyed it more in 2015 than I did in 2000 lol'! fantastic game, One of the best on ps1 imo, My only real critique is I wish it had a quick weapon swap button rather than having to go into menu whole time.

    • @sparrow6190

The graphics and battle system of Legaia are leagues ahead of everything else on this list, which all look like upgraded hand drawn SNES jrpg copies. It's just on an entirely different scale. If only they hadn't lost the original devs for Legaia 2 when they decided to scrap the original story and go with the most boring bland cliche rpg ever, that only slightly resembled Legaia 1. That was a huge bust, I don't think I even beat Legaia 2 because I was just boring as hell, after I was so freakin hyped up to play it too..
And MegaMan Legends is just the shizz, I still feel the pain from Capcom getting our hopes up for Legends 3 only just to destroy them by cancelling shortly after. They did get a lot of backlash from it, I still to this day am disinclined to play their other games.

They didn't release Eternia here in the U.S. because Mattel had a copyright on the "Eternia" name, due to He-Man & the Masters of the Universe. Thanks to that & naming it Destiny II, we never got my most anticipated "Tales of" game -- the "true" Destiny 2. Why Namco didn't call it something else is beyond me, but I believe they called it Destiny II because the 1st Destiny sold well in the US. WoW, those ff numbers really put into perspective how massive the franchise was(still is), when it only managed to lose to the second best seller in its genre, which is also happens to be considered a national treasure level fairy tail... with an offshoot that wasnt even that expensive to make... and each other game sold so much better, that same second place would need to almost sell 2x as much more to defeat even 1 of the main games...

I find it very interesting how the games that had most of their sales from Japan were sprite-based or had chibi graphics and very few of the sprite based games in general sold very well outside of it, just SO2 and Xenogears. When you consider that the American RPG boom was FFVII and how a lot of people would dismiss any game without 3D graphics, it makes sense.
I've always felt for the PAL Regions having missed out on so many amazing games.
Parasite Eve was probably the only Survival Horror game I wasn't too terrified to play. Probably because it was less reliant on jump scares and more about the atmosphere.

Well modded ps1s were so common back then we didn't really miss out if a game didn't get released over here officially we'd either get it from an local import store and pay an extra £20 at the time for it or somebody knew a guy who would have a list of all the latest releases in America and burn a copy for you for a few quid
It's how I was able to play xenogears and chrono cross back in the day we did pretty well in the ps1 gen for getting JRPGs but there was still a lot we missed or some strange releases like parasite Eve 2 but not 1 or how we didn't get wild arms 2 despite getting the first one yet we got vagrant story so yeah it was a strange time haha

    Fun Fact about Xenogears
the very reason the 2nd disc was rushed because Squaresoft was in a brink of bankruptcy before, it had the choose between Xenogears or FFVII, sadly FFVII was chosen instead of Xenogears. thus the result is Xenogears 2nd disc was so rushed it's like watching a story lol.
either way, Squaresoft would've won if they choose Xenogears.
    Fun Fact 2nd about Xenogears
Xenogears was considered to be a Final Fantasy game before it was named Xenogears, but it was too dark, it has mechs, and stayed too far from what Final Fantasy was, thus it was given a different name.
what we now know as Xenogears.
    A quote straight from wikipedia.
"The first title, Xenogears, was originally proposed as a storyline for Final Fantasy VII, but was allowed to be developed as its own project. After Square shifted its focus onto the Final Fantasy series"

Don't get my wrong, I'm also a fan and FFVII is my first JRPG and the sole reason why I love RPGs in general.
Played VII more than I can count with my fingers.
I just explained why Xenogears Disc 2 is rushed. I'm not bashing on FFVII or whatever you might have interpreted it, you don't have to tell me it's a Classic and etc2. cause until now, I'm playing PS1 JRPs (currently FFIX Unleashed Mod).

Honestly, Arc the Lad 2 for me is the best underrated game I've played on the PS1. Just like Chrono Cross, it's the music that sticks with me to this day whoever is the composer for Arc the Lad 1 and 2 deserves more recognition. It's so 90s anime, but in an amazingly good way. Gives me Yu YU Hakusho ED / GTO ED2 vibes.
Not to mention the battle system on those games are simple, but rewards your for playing smartly.
I played Arc the Lad 2 before I turned 10, and even I finished it! That's not to say it's an easy game. Hell no. It's just that the system isn't complicated for a kid to understand, but still manageable enough that it doesn't block anyone out from enjoying the whole game.

what is so good about valkyrie profile? you cant grind your main units effectively because you need to also grind the other units for odin but the monsters dont respawn without spending two days. i also read that you can solo the game but the combo special takes atleast 8 hits to fill
i really like how the main story is just recruit units and send them to odin but no character development between the main cast is not what rpg's are about

well, to be fair, BoF4 was released in 2000, so it makes sense the ps2 was almost out of the door by then, its safe to assume people just were looking foward to it. also, i remember the reviews of 4 not being that good. they werent bad, but most people felt like it wasnt a big leap foward compared with 3, and it didnt help that the dragon forms were very lackluster by comparisson. to many it felt like a big step backwards.

I feel that BOF III's biggest contribution was that classic SNES animation graphic like style. It helped the game feel familiar with some improvements as well. I, for one, have difficulty playing BOF IV because of its pastel color scheme. It has always been an eyesore to me. Also, at the time that I started to get into BOF IV, I was very cultured into anime by then. So those animated cut scenes didn't strike me as a good quality. I really do want to give that game a chance, but maybe first, I need a version of it where the color scheme can be brighter and more lively and vibrant. Maybe a little more detail to those animation scenes wouldn't hurt either.

In Europe we didn't get that game, I'm surprised that you said that the game sold 4 millions worldwide. Perhaps that number takes count of the 3DS remake sells?, that was the only official release of the game here in Europe.

We also have to remember advertising just wasn’t big for our PG’s back then. Any of those games dropped right now on the PlayStation store or the Xbox store I would sell millions if any of those games were remade from the bottom up they could become game of the year contenders. Could you imagine if they re-made vagrant story. What if they literally remade parasite Eve something similar to what we saw with resident evil two. Hell like I said most of these games could literally just get re-released in emulated form and they would sell millions. They could literally charge $20 per game and we would spend it. If they remade some of them we would fly through the roof. I remember the square Started their RPG initiative a few years back now they should’ve just remade some of their classics.

i feel like you can point to a "FF7 Effect" and a "FF8 Effect" with these numbers. Most of the top half of this list was stuff that came out in between 7 & 8, riding the worldwide JRPG boom, while the sequels with lesser numbers tended to be toward the end of that period or post-FF8.
Not sure how much younger fans know this, but FF8 got a massive backlash from the English-speaking world at the time and was almost certainly the moment that drove the more mainstream audience away from the genre. It seems have a lot more defenders nowadays, but i think you can look at the drop from 8's numbers to 9's as an indicator of this - especially given that 9 got much better reviews at the time!
Anyway, glad to see my favs Valkyrie Profile & Suikoden II make the list at all, and Saga Frontier (yes, i am an eternal truther for that game) almost on par with some of Square's more hyped releases!
