Nick have you heard of the 2 greatest Olympic lifters in the history of the USA? 1. Paul Anderson -- 1956 Olympic Gold medalist 2. Mark Henry -- the 7X USA weight lifting champion. Competed in 2 Olympics as a HW class.
Nick, I like your energy and enthusiasm but this is the second video I've watched where I think you're being irresponsible. Having untrained lifters attempt bodyweight overhead movements is super dangerous. Olympic lifts are technique dependent. I wonder how many of your contestants go home with serious injuries? I had to stop the video after the first skater kid almost bailed his first attempt. Not a hater. I love how you encourage people to get into fitness but I think this one was a miss. Cheers.
You didn’t even lock out all the way and gave the guy at 4:00 bull but he did it either way. Just compare yours and his real quick. Your arms look bent still. Be fair man and do it again
@Eddie Quezada the bottom position in a snatch is absolutely brutal for someone who has never done it, however a power snatch is usually easier than a power snatch because of the front rack mobility
@@eddiequezada7738 Snatch is easier and that is true in general, not just my opinion. Most weightlifters start by learning the snatch because it is easier but still carries over to the clean
@@larryboi2706 snatch is not easier at all lmao. I could clean and jerk body weight within like 3 months of lifting. 315 within like 4 years of lifting (for football). Idk if I ever attempted more than 225 on a snatch I rly don’t remember. Maybe 245
Ya this will be the only time he does this once his insurance company sees it. Ya let’s ask untrained people to perform the most technical and dangerous lift.
As an olympic lifter I found myself clenching during a lot of these as some got a little sketchy. But it was nice to see some people try something new and gain a new respect for how hard it is, and hopefully some will continue on and enjoy it. Just wish you had come to my campus 😂
What on earth are you talking about.. if you practise something sports related for 1 hour or less, and can't do it it doesn't mean oh it must be hard.. There are sports people practise for a few years and are still rubbish at it and barely reaching intermediate level!
@@boliussa I wasn't saying that it's hard because they only had a small amount of time to do it. Weightlifting in itself is a very difficult sport that people spend their lives training for. But many people that have never been exposed to it will see one of the lifts and get the whole "I can do that" mindset. So as I said it was nice to see more people be exposed to them, and hopefully enjoyed them in the process.
I agree. I hurt my lower spine trying to catch myself backwards on one of my shoulder press reps in my lower 20's. I heard a small crack and never got it checked out. The pain has gotten less over the years and it only is noticeable during certain times. These challenges are fun to watch but I worry someone will hurt their spine trying to catch themselves from going backwards while the weight is up.
I have no experience in such lifting, but I have a feeling that multiple people in the video tired themselves out too much, before being able to lift their weight, maybe even failing exactly because of that. What do you guys think about it? Quickly going for like half of the weight seems fine for a warm up, but aren't multiple attempts + taking too long simply crushing and draining you out extremely fast?
that's all legs and hips, minimal upper body strength is required for jerks and push presses. I have friends who can push press 350lbs but can't strict press 225. Push presses are more technical, but nowhere near as much brute strength is required as a strict press.

The attempt of the second to last person made me uncomfortable. The bar went behind his neck on the lift and started pulling back on his shoulder blades. A thousand dollars is quite an insentive for a student. Hell, even for me. But it is (or atleast should be) seriously impressive to get your own bodyweight above your head. Even more so if you've never done it before or trained specifically for it. Looks a little bit dicey when people fail :D
Watching these can be fun. Back when I lifted regularly, I did not think of myself as particularly strong. However, after watching these videos, I realize that I was comparing myself guys like myself who had been lifting for years.
most were pressing instead of jerking. they likely coulda done it after a few weeks of practicing the movement. im impressed with the novice 'cleans'. strong. edit: dude at 4:20 pressed 180#. Holy Smoke. No push. no jerk. just upper body strength. awesome
I'm not a weighlifter but this something I've learned on my own. I can lift 30% more than my bodyweight from the ground and press it above my head for a lockout.
I always thought I'm quite strong pound for pound (65kg/144lbs). Even though I've never done clean&jerk I thought it would be a piece of cake. Tried it and can't even get the bar to my shoulders. After seeing all these guys doing so well, I feel pretty weak now, especially because some don't even go to the gym, like I am. BUT after years of lifting I finally have a goal again and I will train my ass off to achieve it.
Same here. I started lifting weights at about 17 and 135 pounds. I’m 40 now and about 220. But I mostly did bodybuilding type workouts. I started doing the Olympic lifts and it’s a whole different world. I also feel weak with these lifts. I have a pretty hard time with the clean and jerk when catching it on my upper chest, also my hands are short so when I catch it properly my pinky finger is basically taken out of the equation. But I’m fascinated with these lifts , they are basically a full body workout 🏋️♀️
I think the push press would be the easy part. I always do my OHP strict (I've done multiple sets of 10 reps with 135 strict at a BW of 170), but I think push is a lot easier because you are using leg drive rather than just upper body. I've never done a clean with any appreciable weight, so that's an unknown for me.
Push press is always easier than strict. At one point I could only strict press 125 but could push press 175. But I also have strong legs so. Oh and also the clean part is mostly just about technique. I could do a shitty version of it with 175 as a max but switching to actual good form I probably could get 165 or so and I've not trained it correctly for very long
@@coachingconfidant2785 Not at all. I was push pressing 155 and strict like 110 for a while. Then 175 and 125. It's a much bigger boost if you know what you're doing
@@coachingconfidant2785 I don't mean jerking the weight over head. I also don't train Olympic lifts nearly as much as I'd need to for that to be the case
"I ran 800 in high school" - what an understatement. I watched videos of you running against Yuriy Borzakovskiy in the Prefontaine Classic in high school.
This made me want to try this challenge! I’m 268lbs. and I got up to clean and jerking 225lbs. before failing at 255lbs. Love the full body soreness this workout gives you. 2023 goal: Lift my body weight over my head.
Idk how people do it I'm 210 and my max dl is like 290. Only been lifting a year but doesn't make sense how some of these people can lift the weight they can
Bison I usually love your videos but I've gotta say I didn't enjoy this one as much. I love oly lifting with a passion. I've been at it for about 18 months. I realize that isn't a long time but any injuries that I have experienced, or injuries my coach have mentioned happened during his career and one of his athletes careers, all occurred when performing the lift incorrectly. I currently have a wrist sprain for catching the bar incorrectly at a warm-up weight. Most of the strangers who attempted to clean and jerk in this video have never done it before, do not have the mobility or flexibility to do it, have never broken the movements down that are within a clean and jerk, and do not know how to properly bail out. The ending was awesome and as always I love watching your videos. But for safety reasons I was very worried and am glad that nothing went wrong when a lot could have gone wrong in the recording of this. Keep at it with the awesome videos though!!! Always a fan.
Thank you for this message! I was concerned for people’s safety as I always am. To help make sure people were not injured I was there to coach them, spot them, and help them warm-up & build correctly. I assure you no one was injured in the making of this video. I also want to point out that life is about taking risks. Sometimes we get a little banged up and bruised along the way and that is just part of the adventure! There are worse things in life than nursing an injury. As an elite athlete yourself I know that you know what I’m talking about!! 🦬
@@nicksymmonds give me 3 years and then I'll be elite 😅. Spent tooooo many years on the track to be an elite oly lifter so fast but one day ❤️🤙 P.S. The 5K run you did with the local highschools was awesome to watch on youtube 👏👏👏
It's very interesting the difference between the powerlifting challenges and the oly lift challenges. Bench/Squat/DL I've seen here people doing pretty impressive weight for the average layperson. But olympic lifts are very technical so people aren't doing as much weight. It goes to show that strength and power are specific, and maybe people are focusing too much on the Big 3 when we should be doing more eclectic diversity in exercises and fitness regimes.
Olympic lifts are useless for the average person. If your goal it to get bigger and stronger these lifts don’t help. Not to mention they are the highest risk of injury. Using moment to move weights go against everything a weightlifter should be doing. I can understand these lifts may help in explosiveness in sports, but for most people those days a long gone. I just wanna get jacked and not get injured
@@AB-nv7bz fair play, although in reality bench+deadlift are useless for the average individual by those standards as well (the only one I wouldn't consider useless in any regard is the squat) But I wouldn't say they're absolutely useless either, especially power movements like Oly lifts. Strength is not the first thing to go as you age. It's power. And studies show that the ability to produce power is negatively correlated with all-cause mortality in older individuals. Strength is good too but the ability to move slowly with big weights doesn't have the same advantages to being able to move lighter weights explosively. And vice versa. If all you wanna do is get big and beefy and look good, then yea don't do oly lifts. If you want to have good fitness levels, a holistic approach will be beneficial, including power movements (though it doesn't have to be C&J or snatch, just like you don't need to deadlift to be strong, there are definitely alternative movements to each). In terms of injury, I'm not sure whether oly lifts have higher rates of injury than powerlifts (though it would make sense). They might, tho both have significantly less risk than sports in general, and much less than long-term sedentarism. However a power clean or other plyo movements are good enough for power development imo
@@AB-nv7bz That's true, but not all olympic lifts are a 1RM max unless you're in comp for OL or tapering for such. Training (for sports) with these are usually around 80% 1RM at most, and surely go down from there (reps are dependent on the exercise). Though crossfit does the whole oly shit wrong in my opinion. They treat it as conditioning (which is valid) but while not lowering the weight. If you're gonna do a barbell complex then even 135 is probably too much. That's where the injuries come in, but not based on the nature of OL. You're not supposed to do OL in a fatigued state at all
I'm a weightlifter myself, so this video was pure gold and horror. The clean is somewhat similar to the deadlift, so you can trust your strength, but it takes a lot of time to learn how to transfer energy into the catch position in the jerk. I admire the enthusiasm of everyone involved. It's a beautiful sport.
Lexi is a beast!! Very fit and cute girl, good for her! Always a pleasure to see someone how s taking good care of theyr body :) Good job for paying and keep it up!!

Legit putting your weight over your head like that is not easy, massive props to those who completed it
Zoink is stronk
8:10 Nick is such a humble guy. Wow.
Jordan damn near strict pressed that, that was nuts.
Lexi is amazing! Would love to see some collaboration videos with her in the future!
You’ve always amazed me with your videos. I’m a big fan!
Thanks for watching!
Watching these can be fun. Back when I lifted regularly, I did not think of myself as particularly strong. However, after watching these videos, I realize that I was comparing myself guys like myself who had been lifting for years.
Wow that girl crushed it!
Yo, tearin' up backs before the new year.
Amazing, Nick makes me want to fly down to Eugene to spend a week doing just challenges with him!

So much respect to all of the people in the beide for just trying, great attitude on display. Special mention to Lexi - serious dedication there!
most were pressing instead of jerking. they likely coulda done it after a few weeks of practicing the movement. im impressed with the novice 'cleans'. strong.
edit: dude at 4:20 pressed 180#. Holy Smoke. No push. no jerk. just upper body strength. awesome
I'm not a weighlifter but this something I've learned on my own. I can lift 30% more than my bodyweight from the ground and press it above my head for a lockout.
1:15 can someone get that dude into powerlifting, please? He could become state champion, bro got all the genetics.
At 160 pounds, I can get over 500 pounds over my head...
been practicing my handstands.
Zoink's greatest achievements

I'm cracking up at Nick saying he ran 800 in highschool at 8:11
I think the push press would be the easy part.
I could do a shitty version of it with 175 as a max but switching to actual good form I probably could get 165 or so and I've not trained it correctly for very long
lol push press is only like 10-20% more weight you can lift, so you would get around 150
@@coachingconfidant2785 Not at all. I was push pressing 155 and strict like 110 for a while. Then 175 and 125. It's a much bigger boost if you know what you're doing
@@sirisaacedgelord6733 well if you're an olympic lifter then yeah
@@coachingconfidant2785 I don't mean jerking the weight over head. I also don't train Olympic lifts nearly as much as I'd need to for that to be the case
"I ran 800 in high school" - what an understatement. I watched videos of you running against Yuriy Borzakovskiy in the Prefontaine Classic in high school.
as a girl who just started to be able to hit 10 reps with just the bar on a bench, lexi is so amazing! i hope i can get that strong
Nick is my fav running youtuber!
Good job Zoink!
LOL I was waiting for this comment to appear LMAO 🤣
lol I saw this in his playlists too!

9:27 "light work" 😂
This made me want to try this challenge! I’m 268lbs. and I got up to clean and jerking 225lbs. before failing at 255lbs. Love the full body soreness this workout gives you. 2023 goal: Lift my body weight over my head.
Idk how people do it I'm 210 and my max dl is like 290. Only been lifting a year but doesn't make sense how some of these people can lift the weight they can
@@VictorKaneLifts Must be genetics then. The first time I deadlifted I did 4 plates on each side. I had been squatting before that though.

Lexi is one of the most impressive athletes I've ever seen.
Spent tooooo many years on the track to be an elite oly lifter so fast but one day ❤️🤙
P.S.
The 5K run you did with the local highschools was awesome to watch on youtube 👏👏👏
@@nicksymmonds do you have contestants sign liability waivers? Enjoyed the content as always!
@@AB-nv7bz fair play, although in reality bench+deadlift are useless for the average individual by those standards as well (the only one I wouldn't consider useless in any regard is the squat)
But I wouldn't say they're absolutely useless either, especially power movements like Oly lifts.
@@Istanbul0687 1 rep maxes and momentum lifts equal more injuries. Small break down in form can be very serious. CrossFit gyms are injury central.
You're not supposed to do OL in a fatigued state at all
i dont see any reason to be trying any type of olympic lift at all
Congrats to the winners, lexi was really amazing an inspiration for a lot of people
Lexi should spin this into being a content creator. She has great energy, confidence and skills.
That girl got that easy as soon as she walked up I was like "she's gonna do it" lol
5:28 “nice front squat” - possibly the most hideous, unsightly front squat ever performed in human existence

I like watching these before my morning workout, gives me some extra motivation.
I love these lifting competition videos
This one was really fun. I'm surprise how few people know about Oly lifting.
@@nicksymmonds if I participated in this, then I'd only be able to hit a pr at most. There is no way I'm getting even remotely close to 315

8:43 BROOOO HE WAS GONNA GET IT why notttt

I'm a weightlifter myself, so this video was pure gold and horror. The clean is somewhat similar to the deadlift, so you can trust your strength, but it takes a lot of time to learn how to transfer energy into the catch position in the jerk. I admire the enthusiasm of everyone involved. It's a beautiful sport.
