I never watched doctor who, but way back when I was 7, I played lego dimensions and there was a doctor who mission with the angels and it terrified me till this day. (I know it lego but it still creepy).

Example, when he tells him that, Dr. Responds "So when you say that you're coming up it's..." then the dead soldier, slightly panicked, says; "Yes, sir, it's the angel she's coming!" Which was probably against what the angel wanted to tell him since it gives time to prepare
Weeping angels are pure horror. You can’t fight them, you can’t run away cause they are faster, the only escape is slowly leave and prey you aren’t alone and time your blinks. That is, if you aren’t already surrounded.

You can brake them though and I’m fairly certain if you shatter them enough they could be destroyed. it’s just really extremely difficult to do that especially when you’re getting sweat and dust in your eyes while under the constant threat of more appearing while you’re trying to chisel this one down.
The freakiest part about this reveal is when they reveal that every statue they'd passed along their way was following them slowly. When they checked behind them around the corner, they discovered more starved angels demonstrating that while they may not be fast in this state, they're all very much alive and trying to close in on them. Which would be absolutely horrifying, because even without the one angel in that ruin that was EXTREMELY well fed, the rest of them would eventually surround them to the point that they couldn't get out if they didn't notice sooner.

Nobody knows what they really look like because when observed, they turn to stone instantaneously and nobody can take pictures or videos of them because that which holds the image of a weeping angel becomes itself an angel. The observation rule also applies to the Weeping angels themselves, meaning they can't look at each other without becoming frozen in place. Which is why they cover their faces, making them appear like they're crying, hence the name weeping angels. They also need to feed on energy to survive. Most of the time, how they feed is by grabbing somebody, sending them back in time to way before they were ever born, and feeding on the temporal energy of the time that they would have lived for if they hadn't encountered a weeping angel. Weeping Angels that have been extremely well fed have a vast power set, extending from crazy fast speed to be able to cover miles in the blink of an eye, to the ability to turn out lights even when observed, to being able to climb into somebody's eyes to kill them from the inside, to being able to rip out a piece of a person's brain to reanimate a version of their consciousness to talk for them, to in extreme cases, according to the Doctor himself, being able to switch off the sun. However, Weeping Angels that have gone a very long time without feeding lose their powers, losing the ability to do all these scary extra things, losing most of their speed to only being able to follow slowly like in this episode, and their physical form erodes, which is bad for them since a great deal of their power comes from their appearance. The only way to restore their form and powers of course is to feed on certain forms of energy, which they do in this episode.
I love how this entire thing ties with the "observer effect" in quantum mechanics. The quantum particles are in superposition (indefinite state) until they're observed, just like angels.. if the angels are thought to be in 2 states, living and statue, observing them puts them in statue state, so when not looking you don't know if they're living or statue (superposition)
The indefinite state theory of quantum particles has been rectified. It isn't "Upon observation they take a certain state", its that because they are quantum, the instruments we use are still too strong and "observing" (recording) their positions applies a force on them, causing their path to change.
More specifically, they killed the soldier and “stole” his voice, using him to speak. That scene was honestly a horrifying realization as he explains over the radio that he died.
Weeping Angels are one of the best examples of how good writing trumps special effects. One of the most terrifying monsters in media and you never even see them doing anything. The idea behind them and how the sheer dread that the characters treat them with does everything that's needed to make them terrifying. Now that is some excellent writing.

They've been stuck in the cave without energy to feed on, so they look like regular statues. The only reason they realized they were angels is because the race that lives on the planet has 2 heads and all the statues have 1. Weak angels, like these, can **only** kill you, because they're starving and weak. Full strength angels send you to another time period to live. No one you know, no one who knows you, no way to get back to your time, and the rest of your life to feel the anguish. A fate worse than death.
I just gotta say what an amazing enemy faction the angels are. Terrifying yet not intentionally evil or even deadly technically. They feed on a beings time by teleporting them too the past, thus they dont kill thier victoms nor do they attack out of some evil sadistic nature but rather a need to feed. Very rare we find writers capable of such great enemies as the writers of doctor who.

What about The Silence? The idea that you've been surrounded by these freaky beings your whole life and never once noticed... or rather, you noticed all the time, but you can never, ever remember.
I think its a shame they let us see the angels move in this special. I loved in the introductory episode for them that we had no way to know if they're stone when nobody is looking, or if they turn to stone when they're observed. I think they're more effective if you don't know, but they're still metal as hell :)
Okay. It's not your fault that I've explain this so many times now but bear with me here. You are not seeing the angel moving. Not exactly. In between the frames of a film there are miniscule gaps that exist which are incomprehensibly small. But to a being as fast as a weeping angel it's just large enough to move a nanometer at a time compounding it all together into inches which is why they're moving so slow
not exactly, they're just screaming which makes them do an evil face (humans cant hear) to show that they're almost "locking on" and are about to pounce onto their prey or in other cases calling out to other angels nearby who can hear the screams of each other

the angels are probs one of the best incarnations of Lovecraft like horror in doctor who's 50+ year history because like the doctor they are one of the more obscure species in the story you don't even know were they came from for sure they work because of how unknowable and weird they really are

It's funny to think that the animal species or even human species might have developed two heads as a way to survive the angels, which could mean that the angels were there a long time.
God I hated that they made the angels move on screen. Part of the lore thwt was really interesting was an image of an angel is an angel, so the audience looking at it meant the angel was frozen. Also since they trapped the angels in that first episode with them when they were shaking the tardis, angels in the ship would all have to walk with their eyes closed or they would be seeing the angel in front of them, turning it to stone until only the ones in the back were left. Kinda breaks the whole “your surrounded by angels and there are hundreds” though
they didn't move on screen. they moved in between the camera frames. if they can move in the flash of a gunfire, they can move in the tiny infinitesimal space between camera frames.

@@asafardaleventeli695 imma guess ur wondering abt 173, it's a concrete statue that moves when someone either blinks or is out of their eyesight. It either looks like a statue with a peanut shaped head or body of concrete with a head connected with rebar as well as rebar for arms and legs.
For me the most terryfing part of this episode is when they came to the initial realization that the species that inhabited this planet prior had 2 heads, and the statues only have 1. You could see the fear in the doctor's eyes, but he wasnt yet ready to confirm his theory and panic everyone else.

A really nice touch in the episode, is close to the beginning when they start walking through the cavern, River and the doctor are talking about the ancient civilization that it came from, and how an unusual feature of the alien species is that they have two heads. And it’s very easy to just take that information in without even realizing the foreshadowing they gave. And once the doctor realizes that little detail, he suddenly realizes exactly what kind of danger they’re all in. Because they thought they were only looking for 1 weeping angel.
As much problems this 2 episodes have, whole realization that we( Doctor, companions and most of audience, including me) overlooked that on planet with two headed people is so many one head statues while hunting weeping angel and now they are in middle of their territory was horrific and genius. This music was perfect for that moment.

Shows called doctor who in case you want to check it out, and the reason he immediately goes from - let me see real quick - to - oh shit - is because he's delt with angels before and knows they are extremely dangerous.
The moment that gave me chills was just before this scene when the doctor and river almost instantly said “Oh” The reason they figured that they were more than likely angels was due to the fact that the place they were in while searching for a lone weeping Angel was supposed to be a sort of tomb for an alien race called “The Aplans”, Now the thing about The Aplans is that they have two heads…Now why would a tomb solely meant for an alien race with two heads only have statues with one head? Turns out all the statues were weakened and starved weeping angels that were slowly but surely getting their strength back, the worst part being that the doctor only realised this while being in the middle of it.
And yet at the time people loved to shit on Moffat. He came up with the weeping angels and vashta Narada. Matt Smith's was my favorite run because of him, his companions the overarching stories and some really fun and scary monsters.
I'm kind of sad that they forgot the whole 'they hide their face so they don't look at each other, their greatest weapon is also their greatest curse' thing. They're just all looking like it doesn't affect the other angels.

it's a great show i would recommend
Weeping angels are a species of alien creature that turns to stone when you look at them. When you look away, or even blink, they are able to move.
They're in an underground cemetery (referred to as the maze of the dead) and an entire army of weeping angels are there with them. They've been stuck in the cave without energy to feed on, so they look like regular statues. The only reason they realized they were angels is because the race that lives on the planet has 2 heads and all the statues have 1.
Weak angels, like these, can **only** kill you, because they're starving and weak. Full strength angels send you to another time period to live.
No one you know, no one who knows you, no way to get back to your time, and the rest of your life to feel the anguish. A fate worse than death.
Oh you are missing out. Dr. Who is an absolute joy to watch.
Interesting fact: angels can block each others movements by looking at each other. So those angels ripped their eyes off.

I just gotta say what an amazing enemy faction the angels are. Terrifying yet not intentionally evil or even deadly technically. They feed on a beings time by teleporting them too the past, thus they dont kill thier victoms nor do they attack out of some evil sadistic nature but rather a need to feed. Very rare we find writers capable of such great enemies as the writers of doctor who.

I think its a shame they let us see the angels move in this special. I loved in the introductory episode for them that we had no way to know if they're stone when nobody is looking, or if they turn to stone when they're observed.
I think they're more effective if you don't know, but they're still metal as hell :)

Okay. It's not your fault that I've explain this so many times now but bear with me here. You are not seeing the angel moving. Not exactly. In between the frames of a film there are miniscule gaps that exist which are incomprehensibly small. But to a being as fast as a weeping angel it's just large enough to move a nanometer at a time compounding it all together into inches which is why they're moving so slow
Fun Fact: If an Angel’s mouth is open, it’s screaming in pain and agony. The other ones just still handle it

This show is at its best when it’s more horror imo. The body horror of cybermen, the jump scares and tension of weeping angels, etc etc. I wish they’d lean into that more often. Like they did in Matt Smith’s era.
the angels are probs one of the best incarnations of Lovecraft like horror in doctor who's 50+ year history because like the doctor they are one of the more obscure species in the story you don't even know were they came from for sure they work because of how unknowable and weird they really are

It was so casually dropped earlier that the original residents had two heads that most of us missed that reference...until the Doctor pointed it out. Then we're all like "oh shit!"

One if the few things the Doctor truly fears, and rightfully so.....
God I hated that they made the angels move on screen. Part of the lore thwt was really interesting was an image of an angel is an angel, so the audience looking at it meant the angel was frozen. Also since they trapped the angels in that first episode with them when they were shaking the tardis, angels in the ship would all have to walk with their eyes closed or they would be seeing the angel in front of them, turning it to stone until only the ones in the back were left. Kinda breaks the whole “your surrounded by angels and there are hundreds” though

For me the most terryfing part of this episode is when they came to the initial realization that the species that inhabited this planet prior had 2 heads, and the statues only have 1. You could see the fear in the doctor's eyes, but he wasnt yet ready to confirm his theory and panic everyone else.

That moment you realize you’ve accidentally entered the Final Boss room.
A really nice touch in the episode, is close to the beginning when they start walking through the cavern, River and the doctor are talking about the ancient civilization that it came from, and how an unusual feature of the alien species is that they have two heads.
And it’s very easy to just take that information in without even realizing the foreshadowing they gave.
And once the doctor realizes that little detail, he suddenly realizes exactly what kind of danger they’re all in.
Because they thought they were only looking for 1 weeping angel.

I fuckin LOVED this show as a kid, and I watched primarily this Doctor specifically!!
As much problems this 2 episodes have, whole realization that we( Doctor, companions and most of audience, including me) overlooked that on planet with two headed people is so many one head statues while hunting weeping angel and now they are in middle of their territory was horrific and genius. This music was perfect for that moment.

I will never not have nightmares about the weeping angels, such a simplistic enemy, but for some reason the single most scary monster i have ever seen in a fiction ever.
It's the uncertainty for sure. Not knowing and then finding out what these are about.
Honestly never much cared for Dr. Who, but this episode will always hold a special place in my heart, as it is the episode that inspired the creepypasta post for SCP-173 and thus spawned the entire SCP Foundation fiction

The moment that gave me chills was just before this scene when the doctor and river almost instantly said “Oh”
The reason they figured that they were more than likely angels was due to the fact that the place they were in while searching for a lone weeping Angel was supposed to be a sort of tomb for an alien race called “The Aplans”, Now the thing about The Aplans is that they have two heads…Now why would a tomb solely meant for an alien race with two heads only have statues with one head? Turns out all the statues were weakened and starved weeping angels that were slowly but surely getting their strength back, the worst part being that the doctor only realised this while being in the middle of it.

And yet at the time people loved to shit on Moffat. He came up with the weeping angels and vashta Narada. Matt Smith's was my favorite run because of him, his companions the overarching stories and some really fun and scary monsters.
