  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer celebrated a landslide victory, with Labour winning a 170-plus majority. This raises questions about whether the UK Labour Party will (d)evolve similarly to the American Democratic Party. Usually when centrists hold power, they shift to the right...

Hasan is confused on old vs new labour…
Old labour refers to the original Labour Party’s focus on socialist policy like trade unions, strikes, public/social housing, welfare, the NHS etc. people like Clement Attlee and Tony Ben.
New labour began with Tony Blair, it sought to copy the neoliberal policy of Thatcher with some lip service to social policy but more of a focus on deregulation and privatisation of national services.
To say Keith is anything even reminiscent of old labour is pure ignorance. I’m not sure if Hasan misspoke or is genuinely misinformed but that was embarrassing to hear.

You need to realize he’s speaking after experiencing US politics. Many of us Americans already know that “centrism” just means appealing to the right so their policy will never truly be progressive. That policy won’t make things better, so nothing will change. The only change will be the right wing will become more emboldened and once they eventually gain power, it’s guaranteed things will only become worse for the working class.

The story for me about UK's election is that Reform UK won 4 million votes. Lib Dems got 3.5 million votes... yet Reform UK only got 5 seats and Lib Dems got 72 seats.
Same thing in France. National Rally got the most votes in a landslide, but somehow finished 3rd in seats for French Parliament? That is not going to lend itself to uh, peace.

Everyone hates the effects of the Tories' Austerity policy, but the problem is that they have a very sophisticated and efficient media machine behind them. Even among much of the left wing, they have done an incredibly effective job at convincing everyone that doing anything even slightly more left-wing or radical than what they are doing is irresponsible and doomed to fail. So people had despair and hate for what the Tories had done, but they had even more fear of what Labour would do, so they held their noses and voted Conservative. It was so successful that it basically shifted the Overton window in the UK mainstream dramatically away from the left and promoted Labour into becoming basically another Conservative party in order to try and fit within the accepted narrative.

  • @dogsbodysounds2598

Labour is center left and more left on social issues. Starmer is dull and boring but that sounds like heaven after 14 years of clowns amd circus acts. Every PM the Tories had over the 14 years screwed the country in some way. Even David Cameron, like nobody was asking for that referendum on the EU at the time.
It's so nice to have some normalcy back in leadership, some balance and an end hopefully for some time of all the extremes and drama. Only negative is that Farage got a seat in parlement and I'm sure he will aim to cause chaos. The best thing Labour can do to make Farage fade away is to get the work done and stop all the populist and soap opera politics.
