"Wonder Child" is a Sesame Street song that was performed on the show by Helen Reddy, as well as Richie Havens. The song is written from the point of view of an adult singing to a child about how a child's sense of wonder about the world can make an adult see the world in the same way, too.

I remember how much this song struck me the first time I heard it. I listened to the lyrics and thought if I ever had a child, this would be the first song I would play for them. Life came and went and as a 40 year old man, I found myself cradling my infant daughter in my arms for the first time. She was born premature, underweight but strong and beautiful. And as my wife slept resting in her hospital bed, I pulled out my phone and played this song for my daughter. I cant begin to tell you how much that moment affected me... sitting there with a lump in my throat crying tears of absolute love and adoration for my little girl. Thank you Richie. Thank you and bless you.
I was in a very similar situation, and recorded my own own jazz version of it for my daughter. If you have any interest, I would send it to you and would be honored if you played it for your little girl too.
Best RUclips comment I read all year>

I was priviledged enough to meet Richie on three occasions. He was an amazing person and he always made time for his fans. Talking guitars with Richie was a highlight of my life, and his music will always be incredibly important to me. Rest in peace Richie, you are truly missed!

Everything I see is new
The sky's a nicer shade of blue
And look, the grass is greener too
Since the time I first saw you
Flowers grow around my door
I've never seen that rose before
And now, that rose means so much more
Must be you it's growing for
'Cause you're a wonder child
Living in a world that's all surprise
And you make me see things through your eyes
Wonder child
It's no wonder why I love you so
Rainy days are bright for me
And rainbows shine at night for me
It's you who taught me how to see
You opened up the world for me
'Cause you're a wonder child
Living in a world that's all surprise
And you make me see things through your eyes
Wonder child, wonder child
...
It's no wonder why I love you so
Thanks lovely lyrics
The most beautiful song I ever heard.
Yep
Makes me cry every time I watch this.
I too had the privilege of meeting Richie after a few of his concerts. No matter how tired he was, he would take the time to meet with fans after shows. He signed CDs, tickets, anything you gave him to commemorate the event. What a gentle soul he had, and a great heart that showed in his playing. We (your fans) miss you and hope you are still playing music somewhere....
This is one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever sung. Shakespeare and Blake and Wordsworth would have all adored this touching song/poem.
Thanks for posting.
c'est très vrai Margaux. 3 poètes que j'aime.
I think I found my life song.
I wrap my arms around every word and note and sound of this magic carpet ride, and it's never enough. Richie Havens made the depth and breadth of one's soul attainable,,,and necessary. I wish I could have known him as a friend.
Richie Havens just goes right to the soul of life. His music always reminds me that theres something sacred about living, an awareness and participation in some greater reality-even if our day-to-day lives are often mundane and difficult. Its hard to even put into words what his music does for me, so the point is to just listen and feel and wonder.
This man is a Saint
Magical song. Deep and delicate.
Always think of my grandaughter......Thanks to the man with the BIGGEST heart.A wonder man.Love ya Richie!
as a child , I saw this Sesame street with Richie doing this wonderful song, I am so sad he is gone....RIP in peace wonder child of soul..........
I was 14 or so when I saw Woodstock movie. To be honest I don't remember much from the movie EXCEPT Mr. Havens. I went home and started flailing on my guitar - it just broke open the flood gates and I realized that playing was not something that one did but rather something that comes throw you. To this day, I believe i learned all I ever really needed to know about guitar from this man. Thank you Richie for being an incredible teacher and musician and human! He may be gone but never dead!
Richie's voice speaks directly to my soul.
Richie Havens is one of the best guitarists ever. And he has an awesome voice. Anyone hear him sing "I'm On My Way"? I doubt if I'll ever hear a better version. I guess it's only fair that his version of this song is the one on Old School Volume 2, since Helen's got another song on it.
Heard the news today. The world has lost another beautiful person. Richie has gone straight to heaven God bless him.
I always listened to his songs with a sadness , knowing that something so good couldn't go on forever. Now he's gone the music is even more poignant - the gift of genius is cruel as well . Listen and remember - he is unique and we were lucky to have him.
Many thanks to the people who wrote this magnificent song, to Sesame Street and to the Great Richie Havens who gave his beautiful voice to this song. His voice has this special power to soothe my spirit. And also thanks to the members for sharing all these nice and moving comments.
what's not to love...Mr. Havens is and always has been a true Humanitarian and a very fine Gentleman. Only one voice can sing these songs...and it's him!
Love you Richie!
Richie Havens always blows my mind
richie will always live.
This one is for all the souls, here, there, and gone, who have shown me love. This is especially for my girlfriend, who has helped me know myself again after my mother died. She had to do it again after I buried three lovely dogs. It got her too, and I hope the person who did it is proud of themselves because when they die, they'll be dressed down for it .
Rest in Heaven Richie
You make me see things through your eyes,
Thank you and God bless you eternally.
I think of my kids when l hear this songs..🌻🥰😘
Rest in peace. This song sang me to sleep when I was a child.
This song really touched my heart when I was eight. Richie Havens. He was the greatest.

As the mom of a beautiful little boy who is now a beautiful young man, this song speaks my heart and always will. Richie Havens, I give thanks for all the love and light you gave us. And Hellfrick, I'm so glad you brought this special song to me.
ME TOO! I was 14 too! I cried and died hearing him sing... I knew I was a musician! Amen... :(
I can't say how this touches my heart ~ it is so beautiful. If there is such a thing as reincarnation and time travel, I want to come back as Richie Haven's lover :) He sings with such a sweetness and depth of passion that is truly enthralling.
Yes! This is straight from my memories of being a Lagos lad in the 1980s. You gotta love the internet sometimes. Brilliant.
Thank you for the music Ritchie.. another legend gone.
Heard this song for the first time when I was 11. I’ve had MANY a cathartic moment to the tune of this song since then.
Richie Havens has always been a magnificent emoter of spirit and beauty
Had to see Richie Havens years ago. He was so amazing. The only guitarist I've ever seen changing a string while playing a song! R.I.P. Sir! I learned so much from him!
So saddened to hear Richie has died - huge talent and gracious soul - wish I'd got the chance to see him the world needs more like him
I have been looking for this song for AGES. I remember my son at about 2 years old watching this on Sesame Street. He is now a father of 2 wonderful children and I want him to hear this. . I am a happy Granny! Candy in Colorado

Our first born child is now 3 months old, and this song could not ring any more true. Fantastic performance, and an amazing remake of the original song.
Rest in peace, Richie. We will miss you. Your music will live on forever.
It was written by Sam Pottle & David Axlerod for Sesame Street. It has also been performed by Helen Reddy on the show. The Havens version is available on Sesame Street - Old School Vol. 2. (3 DVD set from 2007)
The tuning that he is playing in here is DADF#AC. The C is the alteration. Usually he plays in a open D tuning: DADF#AD
When I heard the news, I had to come straight here and listen to this song. Just amazing. Played in a way that is all Richie.

I can understand where your mum is coming from, she still loves you and the song reminds her of you
beyond words
Such an amazing voice...timeless.

Neither can I! I shared this once on facebook, and a close friend of mine, a male friend, said he thought it was terrible, had never heard of Richie Havens, and thought he was a bad singer. I couldn't believe it - how could he not hear the man's genius?
1975, this would have been 6 years after Richie Havens was the first to perform at Woodstock
Flowers grow around my door
I've never seen that rose before
And now, a rose means so much more
Must be you, its growing for
'Cause you're a wonder child
Living in a world that's all surprise
And you make me see things through your eyes
Wonder child, this I know
It's no wonder that I love you so
Wonder child, wonder child
I just listen to this song repeatedly throughout the day. Makes me think of the True Wonder Child. Has anyone else heard the phone ringing sound at around 1:27 in the recording. Goes to show how live it really was.
If and when I have a kid, I want to set a montage of him or her to this song and just tear up like a big softy. Excellent.
Rest in peace 3
This is magic... wonderful... and very amazing...!!!!
This brings tears to my eyes every time. I wonder if that would happen if I'd never had my son. Elisabeth
I wish he would have this put on I tunes or someplace where I could buy it. I would even buy a complete CD! Thanks Mr. Havens for this WONDERFUL song!
