Tyler, love your energy and work ethic. I’ve been watching you walk from your van on your road and see all the water that flows down your road. As a former wildlife manager one of the techniques we used to use was “water barring” where you take a tool like a pick axe or Polanski and form a ditch along the side the water is appearing and then make a cross ditch across your road in a slight downward angle in the direction you’d like the water to go. As you make your ditch pull the excess material on the downside of the ditch to form a slight barrier and help keep the water from damaging your water bar. You can make them as deep as you want but water barring is designed to move water but not impede motorized access. As one of your viewers the fact that you pick up other people’s garbage is awesome, good for the environment and as result good for the soul. Happy Birthday 🎉 to you and Dobby.

Trespassers are going to try the front door to see if it's locked. Bad people will break in no matter what. Good people might try the door, too, but if you have a sign advising them that it's now a private home, and asking them to please respect that and keep out, the good people will do just that. Without a sign, even good people might try to get inside just to seek shelter. I could be wrong, YMMV Wishing you and Dobby the best.

Too bad John Deere or Kubota wouldn't sponsor you. You could absolutely go nuts with a little tractor and a few attachments like a scraper, flail mower, hell even just using the scoop to move firewood, trash, you could clean up a lot of stuff and dig a lot of stuff!

We bought a property that people had been using as a shortcut for years.
We built a house and chained the lane way across where the old entrance was.
It took 4-5 years for people to stop trespassing. Most stopped whenever you caught and confronted them but there were a stubborn few who insisted that because they always used it in the past they had the right to.
We’ve been 10 years here now and it is no longer a problem so hang in there, it’ll improve.
    Ps. Happy birthdays!

Firstly, happy birthday Dobbie. Also, thanks to MacCustoms for their very generous help in transporting the timber - and hopefully the cabin foundations will be able to get underway soon. The trespassers will hopefully get the message about the cabin as they see it being occupied and improved when you are there. It may take time to break their habits but I can only hope you get the peace and serenity you want. I'm just amazed by the various 'treasurers' you discover - signs of habitation going back some time. Hopefully you will be able to either get rid of these things or get them deposited in a single location and buried! I wouldn't board the windows but rather improve them as much as possible and have obvious signs of habitation and even some form of PIR on a local solar source that will come on when motion is detected - even if the camera is located inside the cabin and the lights also! Peace.

Not sure what happens next is OK. The pause allows you to breathe, think, and plan! You've done so much already and having goals for future projects is awesome. But respecting what the weather is doing is smart and you are brilliant! You have an entire community of people who care about you and are here to offer not just words of encouragement, but remind you that friends matter and it's OK to make time for your friendship with great neighbors and even the town you are near. I hope you don't feel "stuck" for long. Just put one foot in front of the next and you will move before you know it! Wishing you all the best!!! ❤

Having a 4x4 or cheap reliable tractor on site would help for a lot of issues (hauling of supplies as well as a road blocker). Allowing trusted locals onto your property to camp in designated spots would bring extra security as well as building up potential RENTAL campsites (any extra income makes dreams come true faster). You're eventually going to need helping hands out there so finding a local to fill the spot would be a great idea until you're there full time. Not an easy ask for someone use to being and doing things alone BUT do think on this.

Happy Birthday to Dobby. The place is looking really good. The fence was a good touch, but I think you should build another closer to the road. Don't forget to post your property. Have you ever thought of using the stream for generating power to your home? Maybe you could look into getting a snowmobile for those winter trips. Do you carry any kind of protection for wild animals? Have fun and Stay safe.

I agree, either a snow mobile or 4-wheeler. He could also use skis or snowshoes to help him get to the cabin if he doesn’t want to risk driving down the track.
A 4-wheeler or Polaris would at least get him to the property while the snowshoes or skis would help him get to the cabin

Hope the weather hasn’t turned to rough yet. Oh and happy birthday to both of you. Your road in appears to be a huge challenge and a limiter on what you can do and how fast you can do it. You can’t stop Mother Nature but you can redirect her. Water coming from high ground down and across your road will need to be containing using a series of drainage ditches on the high side with Supported culverts crossing under the road bed to allow the water to get to low ground without taking the road bed with it.
Trespassers will always be a problem it is the nature of the environment. Too many locals for too long have treated the land as free use and changing that will take time.

That’s a wonderful place to be stuck 😂 Can you use some flat boards to unstick your van? You should get curtains and put some things outside to make it look lived in. If you have a Jackery or some similar type of solar battery, you could put in a low drain light with a timer and set it to come on in the evening. Maybe a small strand of clear Christmas lights. AND Happy birthday to you both 🎂🎂🐶 I have used a battery operated fake security camera also. The battery that operates the red light on it might not last the winter but the camera will be there.

You're doing great. Sadly, people do break into places when no one is there. I wouldn't leave anything important there. Like others say, leave a note on the door asking people to please stay out, etc. However, if the front door is left unlocked, then hopefully no broken windows or doors. It's a tough decision to make. But think on the positive side. Maybe one of your neighbors can check now and then. Oh, before you leave for the winter, take photos of everything. If people do go in, in the spring you'll know if and what things were taken. Gooduck

Hi Tyler, "Happy Birthday" Dobby, you are so loved! You are also so strong to be walking or should I say hiking in the great outdoors! I think now that you have found the four corners of your property. Could you draw a picture of what lies inside your piece of land around the cabin? It would surely help me better understand the layout and if a road can be built starting at the outhouse. I think the more construction you do with a fence line the more the snowmobiliers will see someone living there. Even a statement of I live here now and please don't destroy what you see. The treasures you found seem very old so maybe at one time, there was a lot of camping and winter sports on the land. If you can't get the van to the cabin I would leave it behind a fur tree to hide it more. You have a God-given gift of beautiful land and peaceful spots. I see Christmas Tree Farm, cross-country hiking, snowmobiling, camping, and farming. I don't see any maple trees for a sugar house. If you have the hardwood trees you could tape them and bring the liquid sap to a sugar house that might buy from you. Taping and gathering the sap is easy. It is the evaporator and bottling that takes time. Gosh, I could babble on and on. I enjoy your posts very much. I am an armchair watcher. Best to you, Laura H.

Tyler. You can buy an old small four wheel drive farm tractor with a bush hog and end loader cheap if you look hard. Maybe a 45 to 60 horses. I've done what you're doing. Still doing it. I just have years on you. That tractor would really give you a lot of control over your environment. The ways it would benefit you over time is valuable and a great return.

Happy Birthday to you both from Australia. I think it's very amusing to hear you concerned about the weather and in the background you can hear Dobby snoring unconcerned!

Note the ways of the water so when your settled in the future you can use the water to your advantage .. its a pity about tresspassers. The hard work will pay off eventually. If you leave for the winter take your expensive tools with you . Happy belated birthday to you both ❤

You are a lesson in not giving up. Really impressed with your dedication and love for your property.
Happy Birthday to both of you.
That burl wood near the creek might make some interesting projects or sell for some cash. Cheers. And thanks for sharing your journey with us. Much love.

Happy Birthday to you Tyler & Dobby. I share the same birth month. Happy Birthday to us all :). Trespassers can certainly be aggravating, hoping there is no trouble, possibly just someone new that didn't know you were there. Wish you the best in getting out, don't get stuck if you don't have provisions. Until next time

They used to be called Bear Boards. Fifty or so nails poking through a board, through to the other side. Most would use them around cabin doors/windows to keep bears out, however, if you bury them slightly on trails, four flat tires quickly discourages visitors. Clearly the signs and tape aren't working... it's only a matter of time before you see severe damage or thefts.

That is a terrible piece of advice. You could hurt someone seriously if they are walking in. People have probably using that road for years to access the country for hunting. Time will solve the issue, put up signs saying that it is now private property, ask people to respect what you have, show occupancy over the upcoming years and I think you will see that people will leave you alone for the most part. In the UK they have what is called right to roam which allows people to cross private property legally. We don't have that on the east coast, but we do generally allow people to cross property using a road they most likely have been using for years. Those very same people will probably become friends once they get to know you.
