There were 10 wigs total. So one day per wig. Could also be 10 days each but it included not just braiding but also CREATING the wigs. Usually they add the hair just a couple of pieces at a time for a major production like this.
I just couldn't appreciate more how finally after many many years black actors and actresses are getting proper care in their representation in stage and film these days. From make up to hair ten out of ten improvement I'm proud of the growth . And let's not forget aunty Brandy paved the way with the micro braids so come on through heritage!
this movie really took time to talk to real people and ask them what they want to see in their characters. They stopped assuming things about minorities and where so open to changing problematic parts of the stage show to more accurately reflect them.
Also in several interviews Cynthia states that she chose micro braids because she wanted to choose a hairstyle that would connect her to the character and it wasn’t because of it being easy to pull back. She wanted a hairstyle that connected her as a black woman.
You do know that decisions aren't made in a vacuum Right. Lots of people can be involved in the creative process. Cynthia might feel like she made an decision but it was based on the options and creative vision of others. Actors are actors. There's a lot of people involved in the making of an film. That's why the credits are so long. Then there's the people not on the credits due to union reasons.

not just braid but fully glue the hair to the lace one braid at a time and arrange the baby hairs and make sure they are identical or near enough identical in positioning the braids
I saw in an interview where she made the call herself.. she said she wanted to make the character her own / believable. The fine wavy hair they used on Broadway wasn't going to work for her

They're not "highlighting'' 3 or 4C hair because those types of hair don't exist! What they did was decided on highlight a certain style that black women have been rocking before this "team natural" shit! Word to the wise, everything is not about "natural" hair! You team natural bitches need to get over it!
What I really loved were the different shades of color that they used to contrast the green scalp and skin. It was so harmonious and natural, but if they just slapped one color on her head, it would've looked too polished or wig-looking.
please stop speaking for all of us . Every African is not the same as we aren't a monolith! Walk into any African shop in the states and you'll see many Woman on one head
Cynthia specifically asked for micro braids because she wanted it to have some personal connection to her as well as look more natural than full wavy hair. I think her wigs looked absolutely stunning! ❤
There was so much incredible attention to details in this film. It really transports all of us to Oz for a bit. Can’t wait for part 2. Part 1 did not disappoint! ❤️
It makes me really happy to see just how much effort was put into her hair and all the wigs to make her character design help tell her story. Typical Hollywood would have just put a straight haired wig on her and called it a day, this took a fuck ton of effort and I'm here for that shit!! 💚
I’m SO HAPPY that they took the time to make appropriate hair for Cynthia instead of what they wanted to make,.. in an interview, Cynthia said that she asked for the micro braids bc the original wig was wavy and she wanted it to fit her culturally 🙏🏽✨ a true artist and making space for ethnic beauty 🙏🏽🥳💝
Take when actors/actresses say that they did all of their own stunts with a grain of salt. They may have done some low risk stunts (running in heels/ being harnessed up/etc), but directors can't risk production stopping or being delayed over an injury. They also have to protect the actor's money maker (aka face). Think of it like how Beyonce can be credited with "writing all of her own songs." You can do the smallest of efforts for stunts and still say you did all of your own stunts, even if you have a team doing the risky stuff. Like, The Rock has a stunt performer (aka his cousin). While I can't think of anyone in recent years that 100% of the work, Jackie Chan and Bruce Li are one of the few that can say that (probably not anymore, but they did in the hight of their careers). -source: I'm a former stunt performer.
No literally this was my thought. Any african braiders would have this done in 10hours. Especially if there are 3 of them working at the same time. They did a phenomenal job but 10 days?? Come on...

As someone who has worked professionally with many wigs, there is so much that goes into wig styling that people aren't aware of. 10 days for 10 wigs for a main character in a detailed production is absolutely reasonable.
Makes sense, considering shes allergic to water, (or she is in the book) so thos would be an easier style for her to maintain with out washing her hair all the time.
The texture was so nice to see on camera! It really kept her vibe from being very one note. I loved the way they played with texture on her clothing as well ❤️ especially the hat! I wish I had someone to gush to about the costuming irl.

Actually, Cynthia did an interview and explains why it was specifically micro braids and that’s not the reasoning why the reasoning why was because originally alphaba has long wavy dark hair, and she wanted it to represent more of a African-American woman, and that is why it was chosen to be Micro braids She specifically went to the Director and said my hair needs to be micro braids.

Her hair looked so good in the film I didn’t even realize it was all wigs. I was wondering why the actress Cynthia was bald in all the interviews and I just assumed it was a hairstyle she had after wrapping filming. This was very interesting to learn about! Thanks for the fun and informative video!
@@propogandalf this is not at all specific to the movie. Making highly-detailed afro-textured wigs is expensive and time-consuming. @@sonyaturbo9637 The video didn't just say microbraids are time consuming. It talked about the hair color used due to her wardrobe in the film and blending the scalp with the green facepaint.
I find it a bit troubling that they cast a black woman as Elphaba and a white, skinny girl as Glinda. It feels like an implicit message that black people are "ugly." Why couldn't Cynthia have been Glinda? I'm not trying to start a race war here, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's just how I see it. If you've read the book, you know it's very dark and emotional, with a lot of political themes. It tells the story of the green-skinned girl who grows up to become the terrifying villain we remember from the classic tale. Book Elphaba truly becomes evil. She's a leading figure in a terrorist movement, nearly murders a crowd of children, kills another child with an icicle, mutilates a corpse, and instructs her bees to sting a man to death. She's an abusive mother who doesn't acknowledge her own son and even admits she wouldn't mind if he died because it would be "one less mouth to feed." Book Elphaba is a very dark and misanthropic character, with serious mental health issues, including symptoms of chronic depression, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, narcolepsy, and psychopathy. Yet, all this darkness and malice make her interesting and relatable. Given that our society often depicts dark colors as "evil" and black people as "dangerous," I think it's incredibly irresponsible to cast a black woman as the character depicted as evil.
@MadameCorgi she's the only one that thinks that, because she's her friend. Fiyero likes that he can have her (no one else wanted her). The Wizard likes that she's smart (for his ego). Nessa needed Elphaba to survive because she was her caretaker. Only her best friend thinks she's beautiful.
Also in the Wicked musical Elphaba never becomes evil at all. Even if she did it wouldn't be problematic since to suggest that a black person shouldn't be able to play a villain because they are black is...😗
Brava ❣️ Well done by all to achieve this authentic and beautiful look. Also thank you for also making sure to color her whole head green to make the roots/scalp look so natural. Love it!

Cause those wigs look like perfection, especially with the lil baby curls! Yall deserve your own award cause I will never forget how long it took me so braid my hair with micros! 😭
10 days for micros?! Tell me no Aunties were in the room without telling me no Aunties wete in the room lol
From my understanding, they had to produce multiple wigs. Not just one.
There were 10 wigs total. So one day per wig. Could also be 10 days each but it included not just braiding but also CREATING the wigs. Usually they add the hair just a couple of pieces at a time for a major production like this.
Baby the way I came to the comment section just for this! Yes you said it.
10 days for 10 wigs. Sometimes we need to just open our ears and listen.
@@GoodJudyGamesaww, look at the ⚪️ apologist kissing ass...
I feel so validated right now, I’m so proud of Cythnia, as a Nigerian girl myself, I feel I really connected with her 💚🙌🏽✨
I loved her hair and paid such close attention. I was like, “the baby hairs…”
It’s definitely quality work and setting a precedent. Cynthia is an amazing actor, she’s definitely deserving of her flowers. 👌🏾💚✨
Yeah definately talented, but what a diva...
She asked and they said “ok” and that’s that. They could have said no but didn’t. And it paid off.
But Elphaba isn't a black woman. It shouldn't have been a black actress to begin with. The original Wicked Witch was based on an anti-semitic stereotype, and that's why many of the Broadway cast (including the original Elphaba) have been Jewish actresses. I love Cynthia but if any of this was reversed people would be PISSED. Also, she has the most wonderful voice but it doesn't sound like ELPHABA. Her version of Defying Gravity? Nah. Hearing her in other musicals, her voice soars. This just wasn't the role for her.
@@UhohlisaJesus wept 😂😂😂😂☝️😂
@@windyhawthorn7387 So long story short, Cynthia made a decision that worked best for her portrayal of the character and everyone agreed. *jeesh*

THIS lmao good for them

Come this side of the world. We can do it 1-2 days tops
@@joan830bYeah, and you won't get 10 days pay lol😂
Exactly! I just said this in another comment. Those braids would have been knocked out in 7-10 hours, 2 days tops for all of the wigs if they hit up the African braid shop.
I noticed this right away! The depth, the scalp, all of it came together so perfectly. This movie was amazing and worth the 20 year wait
Literally JUST saw this movie and noticed the purple-red hues in some of the scenes as well as the story her styles were telling. Fan-f’ing-tastic 😮💨
Can we talk about those afro edges yesss looks sooo natural and beautiful!!! 🖤💚
Yes edges!! They did this wig justice
It's the hair telling a story for me! 😊 assignment understood 👍🏽👏🏾 🤎
This child (if you know, you know) brought brilliance and majesty to this role that in my humble opinion no one else could. I thank the creators for taking the time to suit her in the finest from head to toe. ẹ kú oríire!
Yaaaass. Some just go ahead and give the Oscar for best make up and fx to this team. The makeup was flawless and it moved the hair was also a perfect choice
Ive watched this at least a dozen times. 3 braiders, 10 days, 10 wigs.
It took 3 professional braiders, working a full day to complete one wig! This is nothing short of AMAZING!! Just imagine the agony of their fingers after 10 days of this. Beautiful!
not just braid but fully glue the hair to the lace one braid at a time and arrange the baby hairs and make sure they are identical or near enough identical in positioning the braids
@ThePurpleCheesecakeZebra I hadn't even considered that. I'm more amazed now.
Her micro braids were beautiful. Thank you for making her intentionally beautiful. 🏅
I saw in an interview where she made the call herself.. she said she wanted to make the character her own / believable. The fine wavy hair they used on Broadway wasn't going to work for her
I'm so glad they took their time to make gorgeous wigs highlighting the beauthy of 3 and 4c hair!!!
Highlighting the beauty of 3 and 4c hair? You do understand before this "3" and "4c" bullshit came about black women with relaxed hair also rocked braids.
I loved her micro braids. ☺️ She was a baddie, especially when she had them in the high ponytail!

They had 10 wigs and 3 braiders.
It was so beautiful it was almost distracting lol. Like damn Ephie was SITTING in that salon chair.
right!! 😂❤
This is the most realistic looking braid wig I’ve ever seen. Had no idea it was even a wig, when usually it’s quite obvious. They did a fantastic job
It makes me really happy to see just how much effort was put into her hair and all the wigs to make her character design help tell her story. Typical Hollywood would have just put a straight haired wig on her and called it a day, this took a fuck ton of effort and I'm here for that shit!! 💚
I’m SO HAPPY that they took the time to make appropriate hair for Cynthia instead of what they wanted to make,.. in an interview, Cynthia said that she asked for the micro braids bc the original wig was wavy and she wanted it to fit her culturally 🙏🏽✨ a true artist and making space for ethnic beauty 🙏🏽🥳💝
the micro braids just added the final touch
she looks like a literal doll
The details on the green scalp and the edges?! It looks phenomenal!
They looked amazing on her as well, saw it last night and it was beautiful
And they state several times that she had no stunt doubles. She did all of her own stunts.
So who is lying?
Oh really? I only heard that about Grande that's crazy
@@cassiodiniz4437 It's possible they created wigs for stunt doubles but then the stunt doubles were not needed. I don't know.
Maybe there were stand ins for scenes she was in but didn’t do or say anything 🤷🏾♀️
Microbraids are so beautiful. My jaw dropped when I first saw her wearing them
She looks beautiful 🤩 awesome 👏 job ❤🙏🏼keep up the good work………. There is hope for the future.you did that 🫶🏼🙌🏽yes ma’am .
I just wonder if they were African braiders bc I’m so convinced they would’ve gotten in done in 24 hours 😂
No literally this was my thought. Any african braiders would have this done in 10hours. Especially if there are 3 of them working at the same time.
They did a phenomenal job but 10 days?? Come on...
Let them get their coin lol
Been laughing about the so called expensive... business class to Lagos/Ghana/Nairobi/Ethiopia and back with 10 braid wigs will still not be "expensive" however let the coloniser tell her story
She said they made 10 wigs. I guess that time was for all 10
@@the281Diva I think they still would have gotten it done faster. It’s no different than 10 clients. I hope it was just the ladies being able to relax to the highest degree while doing the wigs. And that they were paid very well for their work and possibly missed work

I love that they did the micro braids!!
The people in the comments being baffled at the fact that it took 10 days clearly didn't even bother LISTENING to the video because the professionals working on the wig obviously didn't invest all 24 hours of the day into braiding one singular wig, but instead spent 6-8 hours a day making not one, but ten different wigs with different legnths/shades/curl patterns.

Seriously incredible work and attention to detail. Kind of a genius move for the application needed as well. So pretty!
People keep saying 10 days for 10 wigs is to long, but no one knows how many hrs they worked each day. And it was only 3 people braiding these wigs
As someone who has worked professionally with many wigs, there is so much that goes into wig styling that people aren't aware of. 10 days for 10 wigs for a main character in a detailed production is absolutely reasonable.
Honestly, I think it’s a comprehension issue… I really feel like they think she’s saying it took 10 days to do 1 wig 😅
That last picture of her from behind just looks like Fiona in a real life movie.
Saw the movie today. Cynthia made me cry. It was WONDERFUL ‼️💞
Makes sense, considering shes allergic to water, (or she is in the book) so thos would be an easier style for her to maintain with out washing her hair all the time.

10 days? They could have hired some queens from any brading shop in any town ... those would have been done in about three days
I KNOW THAT’S RIGHT! 10 days for 10+ wigs (without a human attached) and multiple braiders?? That doesn’t make any sense. Call the expert aunties next time 😂😂
Can't you just compliment the process and product, then leave? And what do you mean by "Queens" Girl, the hairstylist is a black woman. Black women who worked diligently with her to make her wigs. 10 wigs. Took 10 days. Open your ears and listen. Either way, why is it always Black people always wanna say something negative about another Black person's process? The wigs are great. Simply just say that and go on, not everyone can move their fingers fast when doing hair🤦♂️ no need to bash them over it, or compare.

Seeing natural black hairstyles on the big screen, especially a blockbuster, is rare. It was amazing to see, and to be done so well, meant a lot. And for children, you can be, what you can see💚🤎
Actually, Cynthia did an interview and explains why it was specifically micro braids and that’s not the reasoning why the reasoning why was because originally alphaba has long wavy dark hair, and she wanted it to represent more of a African-American woman, and that is why it was chosen to be Micro braids She specifically went to the Director and said my hair needs to be micro braids.
She said both, she wanted to show how versatile the braids are as well
I understand. But I interviewed the hair and makeup designer myself so this was part of the reasoning
@@KirbieJohnson then why didn’t you add that into your video? I would think what’s coming out of Cynthia’s mouth is more important than the flip-flopping hair and make up lady.
You know what no I call bullshit because this was talked about before production even started what Cynthia wanted so cool it was versatile, blah blah, blah blah blah, but this idea was Cynthia’s don’t take that from her
I love that you said this because that makes the braids way more exciting for me as an African American. That style is so precious to our culture. It’s a staple for us. Including stand-ins, stunt doubles, etc it was 17 wigs all around.
So. Yeah. 10 days to braid the same exact way and to style them. Create the wigs. The edges. Etc.

@@AlexisAngelb6n Ten wigs. Why do you all refuse to listen?

Nothing new... black girls no the process.
This is specific to the movie. Hush up.
@@propogandalf Nope, micro braids are micro braids regardless of what they are for.
@@propogandalf this is not at all specific to the movie. Making highly-detailed afro-textured wigs is expensive and time-consuming. And even if Cynthia had real hair of sufficient length (like Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid), it would still be expensive and time-consuming to achieve those microbraid styles

You're reaching, Glinda explicity states Elphabaus beautiful. She was never ugly.
you’re on point friend 😊💯
@MadameCorgi she's the only one that thinks that, because she's her friend. Fiyero likes that he can have her (no one else wanted her). The Wizard likes that she's smart (for his ego). Nessa needed Elphaba to survive because she was her caretaker. Only her best friend thinks she's beautiful.
It's almost like Wicked is an allegory for racism🤔
Also in the Wicked musical Elphaba never becomes evil at all. Even if she did it wouldn't be problematic since to suggest that a black person shouldn't be able to play a villain because they are black is...😗
Brava ❣️ Well done by all to achieve this authentic and beautiful look. Also thank you for also making sure to color her whole head green to make the roots/scalp look so natural. Love it!
Welcome to the world of African American braids hahaha love it 💕
