The EB looks to be a pretty low cost unit, so maybe they just haven't survived as well or in as great numbers as the more expensive portables. Interesting to know the design was used by multiple makers. Thanks 😀 👍
Very interesting especially that Edison Bell... Look forward to you taking it apart and as its showing signs of it working, maybe not to difficult, but beyond me... ;)
Yes, the Edison Bell is the most interesting and I am hopeful it will turn into a good little machine. A working motor is a real plus though. Thanks 😀 👍
I’ll guess a Thorens motor for the Handephone. The dull re nickel looks good. Shame about the soundbox. The Garard on the Crapophone is a good motor. The issue with that one is the soundbox and the turntable. The 101 should return to life. You can try and clean up the threads on the handle or make up a new one. I stripped a 102 down to the bare wood as the covering was awful. A good score I think depending what you paid for them. Thanks for posting this.
I had another look at the Garrard and its actually a 2 spring model 30, so even better. Yes, the rest of that machine is pretty poor, but I should be able to do something with it. I have plans for the 101, but I will leave that for a future video. It should result in a working 101 though. Total cost of all 3 was £65 which is about what I paid for the 'Indian' HMV 162. Not a fortune and I expect the Handephon is worth that on its own though it was the cheapest and the last one I found. Thanks 😀 👍
I'm inclined to favour the 101 as a good 'all rounder' The Orthophonic 102 is wonderful for loud electrical recordings up to 1950's rock music. What I like about the 101, is the mica diaphragm gives a better sound on acoustic recordings, but also handles moderately loud electrics. Think every collector should have a fake for his/her 'black museum' & to warn others new to collecting! I associate Edison Bell with 'cheap & cheerful' but found the few machines of this make I've heard on YT turn in a great performance & punch way above their weight! Congrats on finding this part restored example.
Thanks 😀 👍. Not quite sure what I am going to do with the 101 yet, but hopefully I'll end up with a decent example as I don't have a working portable at the moment. The fake I will put back together, at least for the moment, just to see how bad it is and what might be done to improve it. Don't have a 'black museum' yet, but maybe time to start one!😉 Until I found this example I didn't know that Edison Bell made machines but I have also read they were popular. Seems a mystery how come so few are about. The veneer is a bit battered but I think it will clean up well and certainly one to keep
The 101 is certainly restorable; I believe there are sources for reproduction rexine to recover the case. The Garrard motor can be salvaged from the crapophone, and installed in something more worthy. The Handephone looks promising: good luck on your restoration!
Thanks 😀 👍. Looking forward to doing something with the Handephon. The other 2 I will probably get going one way or another, but it is my intention to end up with a decent 101 as I don't actually have a properly working portable at the moment
Yes, lots to play with and lots more videos at various stages of production. Going to be a very short car boot season this year, but I have enough stuff to keep making videos through the winter. Thanks 😀 👍
It actually is a 101, as I thought. I didn't have a 102 to compare it to at the time, but I do now: ruclips.net/video/6YsFdtIzBcg/видео.htmlsi=4UaYQQvyTeHIwd1w Thanks 👍 😀
The last one was a design made by quite a few companies. I have a two versions made by different makers. I hadnt seen an EB one though.

Great news on the motor on the last one. Can’t wait for more
Thanks. Yes, lots more videos to come both on these things and others. 😀👍

I'm with Paul. The 101 is a fantastic player. Well worth saving if you don't have one. Great video 👍
@@GramophonicReevolution Thanks 😀👍 I have a cunning plan for the 101 which I will cover in a future video 😉
@@mrrgstuff brilliant. Looking forward to it already

These really are some decent finds here. Are you doing a series on these?
Thanks 😀 👍 Yes there is going to be at least one more video about each of them, and maybe more, depending how much work they need
Looks like you have a challenge or two there 😁😁😁👍
