And we walk and spend time outside more than we stay at home, hence our obsession with large porches and balconies, with greens and whatnot. Our house has 4 floors and 2 basement levels, but we spend most of our time in the garden.
Drinks in the US are mind boggling to me. A large cup of soda is basically an entire bottle and has around 600 calories. Pair it with burger and fries and you have your daily calories intake in ONE meal. Not to mention all the additives they put in the food
@@baylessnow It's top much calories with no interest for your health. A milkshake at least gives you some vitamines, minerals, proteins and fats. It's not the healsthiest things to drink but it's better than a soda.
@@Redenial First trip to USA & I was so looking forward to a roast dinner full of veges. I lived there for a few months & cooked myself as I could NOT live on that crap everyday. Hard to get the food I craved for but I became best mates wiith my Butchers in the street. I used to order roasts every week as I needed to live normal sometimes & then the roast meat sangers for lunch with Tomato Sauce.
Btw, in the us, they use an ingredient related to rubber in the Subway bread. It gives it that special spongy texture. Disgusting. That ingredient is illegal in Europe because it’s not good for you.
They also "fortify" everything that can be (legacy from the early 20s/40s). So on top of having overly processed food, it's food that bloat you at best, make you sick on the worst side.
I rarely drink Coca Cola but I learned that why we use refined sugar in Oz - USA uses Corn Syrup which taste like crap. Our Coke is called "Mexican" Coca Cola as they use the same mix too in Mexico.
Thats true, as the way fries are made in America is totally illegal here in Denmark. They put a lot of artificial stuff in them, even a bleach product to make them more white looking. Here the fries at MacD confuse yanks as they're yellow. Told them, we dont put all that bad stuff in them so they look like that..

I reply the abuse that chef Jamie Oliver had from the UK & the USA for the crap they served in school cafeterias. The fools who objected refused to listen as these overly obese students were eating pure crap. Jamie asked them to switch the lard to olive oil in their cooking & realise you are saving a high portion of fat being ingested by younger bodies. Forming these bad habits leads to long term health issues. I recall a lovely girl crying over "Twirlers" or "Twirlies" being removed off the menu. These were deep fried potato twists I believe. I think there are several reasons for obesity in the USA: the size of portions indeed, the fact that processed and poor quality food is much cheaper than healthy food, the habit (and often the obligation) of the car to the detriment of walking and cycling which means that people move little, the love of fried foods (nothing is worse), the love of sodas, more salt and fat in the food...
All of which in the complete absence of any free healthcare, or counselling, to help with your addiction to caffeine and sugar; and when the almost inevitable stomach ulcer comes...
There are also studies (iirc) that growth hormones given to cattle still persist in meals and triggering extra appetite, making you want to overeat. It's one of the reasons the hormone meat is banned here.
When I was in the USA (New Jersey and New York) I was blown away by the portion sizes. My wife and I would buy small meals and share them. I think people thought we were simply trying to save money (I’m Scottish 😂) but we were simply trying to stay healthy. BTW, if they ever do a movie version of the Wacky Races you’d be an amazing Dick Dastardly. 👍
Have you ever had an English breakfast? Beans, tomatoes, and sausage, and toast BEFORE the eggs and bacon. Try to stay healthy, skip breakfast when in England. Portion sizes indeed!

If it's free refill on soda in the US, why would anyone buy the large, instead of just buying the cheaper small one and refill it as many times as you like? I get if you take it to go, then perhaps you want the large one, but then you don't have the refill option anyway.
Large portions = Large to very large people. The rest of the developed world doesn't have free refills. The only thing that the free refills do is build up the sugar levels thus increasing the chances of becoming diabetic. Not a good route to go.
@gerardflynn7382 why do you say "the rest of the developed world"? Burger Kings does offer free refills in Spain, probably in other countries too. I think TGIF also offers free refills and I seem to recall Domino's had some kind of similar deal too. Otherwise I'm not familiar with what's offered in this kind of restaurants, I hardly ever go to any of them, save for just occasionally indulging in a portion of Burger King's onion rings.

Our media also run campaigns to get us to want these worse deals. Re why buy big if you can get free refills, you only get the refills while in the restaurant, these are often takeaway, also the bigger drinks are often included in bigger deal prices.
Also Double bottom. US cups might be the entire volume but EU cups have indents in the bottom with reduces the inside volume. Cheap marketing trick. Make the cup look bigger than the amount of liquid it can actually hold
@VeneficusCubedo you mean the extra 4-5 mm edges on the bottom of many paper cups that allow them to stand better on uneven surfaces? they are very useful, in the nordics we like to sit on stones or grass in the park or in the forest so it is practical that the paper mug does not have a flat bottom.

We have cold coffe in Italy, but we don't use the ice. We prepare it the evening before and keep it in the fridge to be cold the whole day after. This is because the ice melt and add water to the coffe making lose taste
Starbucks sells their coffee for the fridge now. I like it. I need the caffeine jolt, but I prefer my first drink in the morning to be cold. And you're right about the ice if you can't drink it fast.
I don't know if this is the case throughout Europe, but in Germany Subway's sandwiches are classified as sweets because the ingredients - especially the bread - contain an abnormal amount of sugar.
All White Bread recipes have added sugar. The Brits invented 'American White Bread" for their Afternoon Tea to look more refined than a peasant's loaf with a crunchy crust. Look up any British recipe for White Bread, you can eliminate the sugar and the Tea.
Subway aren't allowed to call it bread here in Ireland, it's classified as cake because it contains so much sugar. So unhealthy, kind of defeats the whole idea of the sandwich in the first place.
The mass produced chicken for most takeaways and supermarkets in the USA is a cornish cross chicken ( that's the breed) they are hatched and can be slaughtered in 8 weeks. It is a cross bred chicken but it isn't gmo the food it is feed is gmo though. In the UK we do not use the cornish cross yet and of course no animals in the UK are fed any gmo foods as its illegal to feed to humans and animals.
8 weeks, really? this may (partially) explain their size. In my country (on the other side of the globe) it's typically six weeks (42 days), even in "organic" home farms. The standard allows 5 weeks for 1.4-1.6 kg. gross weight, 6 weeks, or 7 weeks max for 2.5-3 kg gross weight. it seems that one more week won't add any more value.

It's not just portion sizes but US McDonald's products (and probably other chains as well) have a higher fat rate, more salt and more calories than most European products, even if you account for size differences.
As I remember, they don't salt the fries at all in Europe! I tried KFC and McDonald's in the UK, the Netherlands and Finland. And I was angry about lack of salt on potatoes. Our McDonald's also tried that standard for a year or something, but people disliked it and they go back to salt in fries.
@annafrolova7891 in the Netherlands we definitely have salt on the fries. You can watch them putting it on there. We just don't bury the fries in salt. That would kill people.
@@lidewijvos What I find here in Norway is that it varies from store to store.. One mcdonalds in my city has alot of salt on their fries by default, while another one in same city has so little salt that you can barely taste it.
Most interesting to me is the difference in ingredients rather than size..for instance McDonald's fries in UK have three ingredients, potatoes, salt and the cooking oil. US fries 🍟 have a huge list of ingredients including colours, beef flavouring etc I know what I'd rather be eating. And the American Kentucky chicken looked so greasy...🙁✌🇬🇧
As far as I can tell they don't add any colouring to the fries in the US, they add Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate which is basically the same thing as E450 - a stabiliser (which helps the fries *maintain* their colour). E450 is also listed in the ingredients for the fries in Finnish McDonald's, so it's not unheard of in Europe as an ingredient. The beef flavouring on the other hand is odd.
I saw another video where I think they said there were 19 ingredients in US McDonald's fries, compared to three in the UK. Why? They're already delicious!
I stand corrected on the colouring however, ..'The US fries have 14 ingredients, while the UK fries are restricted to potatoes, two kinds of oil, and (sometimes) dextrose. Notably absent from the UK fries is methylpolysiloxane, a commonly used anti-foaming agent that's also an ingredient used to make Silly Putty' 🙁
As a 19 year old on my first USA trip I loved the large meals but by day 2 I was choosing the small or medium meal. I actually lost weight as I was skipping lunch as the struggle to eat the volume & calories was too much. In future trips I was prepared to eat breakfast & skip lunch. When I lived there I needed to cook my own foods as I could live off the take away food after a few days

Mir sind die Preise jedenfalls mittlerweile so der so zu hoch. Bei KFC war die mittlere Pommes so groß wie die kleine bei Mc Donalds. Alles nur noch Verarsche vom Preis her. Wenn ich schon minderwertiges essen möchte kann ich lieber was aus der TK im Supermarkt kaufen. Da gibt es dann wenigstens auch mehr für's Geld für den selben Müll.
It's not just the size, there are also the ingredients, which are not published but due to different laws the UK (and other places, llike in other European countris) the US ones most likely have more chimicals. Weight is also problematic as a measure. A check of the Big Mac, which was similar in weight, on both websites show that the US Big mac has almost 100 calories more than the UK one (590 vs 493).
I remember serving an American at a McD in Skegness who ordered the XL. He said: 'Yo boi, I's ordered the XL and ya'll serve me this weeny cup? It ain't evens holding my whizz, ya hear me boi?' I told him that septics could just piss somewhere else ...
the cup lids have those bubbles for ease of determining what's inside. you can ask for diet cola for example amd they will push one of the bubbles down, so if you are with friends/family and order more stuff together, you know which drinks are diet ones.
I've been travelling a lot around the world, and regardless of what your video says. I know there's a huge difference in portions. From Vietnam to European countries, to Santa Monica LA. The portions in the US are disgustingly big compared to Europe. Every time I'm in the US it's amazing to me the portion I recieve: soon as I look for a quality restaurant however, the prizes are insane. For even a mid tier restaurant the prices are insanely high. But as long as you're looking for garbage food level, US will hammer you with it at the lowest price
They main issue seems to be the sizes of drinks. I mean, the small US cup was usually about the size of the large UK one. So in the UK your drink intake would be at a max of about 200kcal and in the US that's the minimum. Provided you drink the whole thing. And it's not just calories, the drinks probably have more sugar in them than the food items. Having said that, I am actually more shocked at the scammy tactics seen at play here; Burger King and Starbucks, I'm looking at you.
TBF to Starbucks im pretty sure it is the cup size that is listed, but they dont fill the cups all the way expecting people to add milk to a black coffee which is what was ordered and with the other coffees the foam would prevent the cup from being completely filled. The chips on the other hand are a scam from most places, the McDonalds near me they dont bother to fill a large chip so you dont get any more that you would if you ordered a medium.
Keep in mind that UK is still a country with big portions compared to other places in Europe - in Romania the mc chicken nuggets go up to 9 pcs max, and other food items tend to have sizes extra to rest of Europe.
Most of europe do have 15 or 20 pieces tho, nordics and (unless it changed in the past year) Germany have 20pcs. Most people don't go for larger than 9 though.

Im from the UK & the 1st time we went to Florida on holiday we couldn't get over the portion size of everything out there. Both a large McDonald's/burger king in UK was a medium out there. Everything is just huge. Also the same drinks/sweets taste different in each country because the US had additives that are banned in UK/Europe. Dr Pepper/Mountain Dew tastes totally different, also skittles & Starburst are different, all because of the additives.
I live in Austria now for almost 2 years. There even are differences between Austria and Germany. Austia's BK has a 4th size in drinks - "King Size" is 750ml and the largest you can get... In Germany the largest is 500ml

Macdo in france advertise mostly on the freshness and the quality of their product. Like AOP cheese (real cheese with protected origin), homegrown beef and that kind of stuff. Like we have the signature burgers, which are more expensive but supposedly with better quality. But also everyone complain that they are now very expensive for a fast food (a best of big mac menu is like 9€). The approach is totally different for the 2 market i think

I came across that when l was a a US petrol station. (I had a rough idea of the old English system). I was standing there trying to figure out the prices of fuel, when l was asked if l needed help. I replied that l was confused about the volume of the US gallon. Personally l can’t think in inches and feet, or work out liquid volumns either. Its 100% metric here in New Zealand.

The size of dinner plates has grown in the UK and with the increase in the size of the plates we have had an increase in people with obesity. I have a dinner plate I bought in the 1970s and it is far smaller than the dinner plates they sell now. When I went to the USA in the 1970s I thought the family I stayed with was buying catering packs until I went into a supermarket and found that everything was that size! And yet, the cucumbers and packs of butter were tiny compared with the UK!
I’m Australian and it was mind boggling what the family drank that I was staying with in the USA, 64 ounces ffs. I introduced them to stir fries and roasts etc. oh & putting butter in crackers etc tastes a hell of a lot better 😅 Not expensive & way healthier than what they were consuming. FYI free refills aren’t a thing here.

@@Cleow33 Re the coffee, they were measuring in Fluid Ounces, in UK and US without mentioning these are different sizes. I think its worth noting these are fairly light hearted comparisons. At least they didn't measure the pizzas by counting how many slices.
You have to watch too the ingredients of the food. Here in Europe (not only in UK) we have forbidden ingredients or a maximum quantity permited (like sugar and salt) in a portion. And I suppose the diference of volume in USA and UK chicken is the breed of said chicken. I remember eating this big and dry chicken in Canada in a pair of places. My group of friends remember it 9 years after eating it because it was not very palatable for our standars.
I think for pizza, Europeans might be more likely to have one to themselves more often, and Americans' default is splitting a pizza between multiple people and/or having leftovers in the fridge. You can get a personal pan pizza too, but it's not the default go-to, but like a "oh yeah, that's a thing too."
Hi from Italy! I'm sure someone else has already said it, but venti in italian means twenty on its own. There is no ventitwenty or whatever he said 😂 Also in Italy pizza diameter is usually about 30 cm more or less (it depends on the thickness, the quantity of dough is the same, but it can be thinner and larger or a bit more thick and smaller). That is more or less 12 inches. BUT each person gets their own pizza! If we share, it means you get half of my pizza and I get half of yours, maybe because neither of us could choose between the same two toppings 😂
as an Italian, for me that pizza is terrible 🤣. However, Burger King is bad as practically the medium size is almost the same as the small one and I understood that if they come to the United States it's by chance If I ever went to a fast food restaurant I would have to take small measures and I would also struggle to finish that drink. At most I'll take sparkling water like I always do :-)

I was expecting this video to be meals on plates, not fast food. Dine in restaurants have very different foods to fast foods. Food Wars was only fast food, until they met up in UK and went to dine in restaurants.
Yesterday I was waiting for a Burger I had ordered, a proper burger made from hung beef that was succulent and still slightly pink in the middle, quality beef. At the same time there was an American tourist in the queue who on seeing the prices was complaining that the burgers were overpriced, and she could get one much cheaper and a bigger one at MacDonalds. That to me shows what Americans are after, cheap low quality food to fill a hole, not a quality product that you sit down and enjoy every time you take a bite from it. Oh, and by the way, she was rather large!
this "bubble" is to drinking out of as we trying to ban straws. I haven't been to McDonalds in a decade so I never tried it, but I have seen in on other cups.
Those cookie portions are a bit misleading. the way that works is when you buy a dozen you get a discount and when you buy 3 dozen you get a bigger discount. they won't tell you no you can't have 3 cookies, you just get them at the price of 3 individual cookies whereas in the UK you'd already get a discount for buying 3.
Ice and Water have the same volume (and same weight). You can test it yourself: mark a waterline on a glas and fill it with ice and water and let it sit. The waterline won´t change a bit after the ice melted. So no, there won`t be more after.
Ice has a larger volume than water but the same weight as the original fluid frozen. That's why you shouldn't freeze anything in a sealed container unless you leave an air gap and you should never freeze liquids in glass bottles.
The drinks in the first clip may look the same, but it's just the perspective because they do the same shape of cup for each size but just make the cup itself larger or smaller. So the angles are the same per cup size to make it look taller or squatter, but the volume is altered.
The extra large pizza with 6 slices (instead of the more typical 8) is an intentional copy of New York style pizzas - which are often sold as street food, in single pieces. That's Papa Johns' approach at least - they won't sell their "New York Style" pizzas in any size but extra large. Not sure about Domino's...

You are missing a CRITICAL part of the sizes. Medium size is in all countries not worth it. It mostly has the worst food/price ratio. This makes the consumer think: "For just 3$ more, I can get the large option!" You weirdly have a seize in between which could make you in certain situations choose large vs super large. "I don't want to cook tonmmorow and will keep them" or "I'll just pay a little extra and throw the rest (definitely!) away". If you have ever seen fast food chains from the inside you will realize that medium cups seem to be almost out of stock. It's just that they are so bad for the customer regarding the price that they will be happy with the small option and all other customers will upgrade to the big one. They also use a different psychological effect. "Saving money by paying more". Normally this can make a lot of sense if you buy goods like shampoo that you can keep forever. Over a couple of month you'll indeed save some percentage with a initial greater investment. With food it's different. You don't necessarily have more hunger but by slightly paying more you get more. It would be a shame if you would let it go to waste. You can eat it but you will surpass your needed calory intake. Most people won't eat fast food if it's 1 or 2 days old. Instead you are already at the next fast food chain ordering something to "fresh" or something that is "only avaible today!".

its def true. when I watch an american brings up his 1 gallon sippy-cup to drink coffee or soda from, I do not understand how you got to thinking that is normal.
With the coffee, they measured the liquid. What should be looking into is how many coffee shots go into the different sizes and sometimes the only difference between a small and medium is the hot water and had the same amount of coffee in.
I can’t imagine getting a regular burger menu including an absurd amount of fries and softdrink in the us and being able to eat everything without stomach issues. I struggle with this even with our European sizes, you have to consider fries are usually just a side dish so I find those portions crazy 😅
This assumes US fluid ounces are the same as UK fluid ounces. They aren't, just like pints, quarts and gallons are different, too. The US measures are 'customary', not Imperial.
The biggest coffee chain in the Uk got into trouble a few years sgo because the medium and large were the same volume. They had just made the large cup slightly slimmer and taller.
As a kid I worked at McD and we were told to fill the (same sized) fry bag only half for the small fries and full for the medium fries. Nobody really did that. So I think this concept persists. The domino pizza sizes (11,5" vs 12") might be due to metric vs imperial as 11.5" is roughly 30cm ... so no discrimination just cultural differences. As for the coffee: go to an Italian restaurant (in Italy, mind you), order a coffee and you'll get a half ounce of coffee - which is actually worth drinking and enjoying.
It's crazy that the US McD/BK soft drink sizes are roughly double of the EU sizes.. and the US version has even more calories thanks to the high-fructose corn syrup. I'm not surprised about the obesity problems..
That channel does those types of comparison. Also putting the ingredients lists for each country. This is a spliced (edited) version for just for portion sizes. Most of their episodes are about 1 outlet type (McD, KFC, BK...)

All prices include tax. Unfortunately KFC and Burger King don't seem to list the specific prices on their website until you begin to construct a shipping order.
I got my fast food cultural shock back in the early 90s when visiting my aunt and uncle in California. My uncle warned us about the US portion sizes, so we ordered small burgers with fries and it turned out both the burger and the fries were bigger than a large order back home. Oh and it came with what I can only describe as a bucket of coke

I didn't seen the food part yet but i probably wouldn't want to adapt that here, since for me the servings are fine, no need to scale up.
I can't believe that the cold drinks sizes at McDonalds or BK are so different. We have our large drink is smaller than the US Small Drink which is absolutely ridiculous. No wonder the fast food craving American Citizens are much larger than their UK counterparts in general. It never ceases to amaze me. With KFC, even the small 6 piece bucket is a sharing one, is the US small classed as a sharing bucket? I would love to know!

And we walk and spend time outside more than we stay at home, hence our obsession with large porches and balconies, with greens and whatnot. Our house has 4 floors and 2 basement levels, but we spend most of our time in the garden.

Drinks in the US are mind boggling to me. A large cup of soda is basically an entire bottle and has around 600 calories. Pair it with burger and fries and you have your daily calories intake in ONE meal. Not to mention all the additives they put in the food
No vegetable or fruits... so all your calories for the day but no vitamines and not enough fiber.
Let's be fair, it's mostly ice. By the time they've drunk down to let's say, a 1/4 cup, it's just going to be coloured water anyway!

Btw, in the us, they use an ingredient related to rubber in the Subway bread. It gives it that special spongy texture. Disgusting. That ingredient is illegal in Europe because it’s not good for you.

The problem with American food, aside from GMOs, is that they put sugar everywhere, actually it's not even sugar, it's high fructose corn syrup
They also "fortify" everything that can be (legacy from the early 20s/40s).
So on top of having overly processed food, it's food that bloat you at best, make you sick on the worst side.
I rarely drink Coca Cola but I learned that why we use refined sugar in Oz - USA uses Corn Syrup which taste like crap. Our Coke is called "Mexican" Coca Cola as they use the same mix too in Mexico.
The UK also has its own issues with sugar in that the sugar tax has basically forced all formulas onto synthetic sugars.

Thats true, as the way fries are made in America is totally illegal here in Denmark. They put a lot of artificial stuff in them, even a bleach product to make them more white looking. I think there are several reasons for obesity in the USA: the size of portions indeed, the fact that processed and poor quality food is much cheaper than healthy food, the habit (and often the obligation) of the car to the detriment of walking and cycling which means that people move little, the love of fried foods (nothing is worse), the love of sodas, more salt and fat in the food...
Don't forget to mention the difference in health and security norms between the two.
All of which in the complete absence of any free healthcare, or counselling, to help with your addiction to caffeine and sugar; and when the almost inevitable stomach ulcer comes...

There are also studies (iirc) that growth hormones given to cattle still persist in meals and triggering extra appetite, making you want to overeat.

When I was in the USA (New Jersey and New York) I was blown away by the portion sizes. My wife and I would buy small meals and share them. I think people thought we were simply trying to save money (I’m Scottish 😂) but we were simply trying to stay healthy.

I think TGIF also offers free refills and I seem to recall Domino's had some kind of similar deal too. Otherwise I'm not familiar with what's offered in this kind of restaurants, I hardly ever go to any of them, save for just occasionally indulging in a portion of Burger King's onion rings.

We have cold coffe in Italy, but we don't use the ice. We prepare it the evening before and keep it in the fridge to be cold the whole day after. This is because the ice melt and add water to the coffe making lose taste

I have also noticed that clothing sizes can be different. (For example) What's labeled as L in the USA is labeled as XL in Europe, M in USA is L here.
In the US they have vanity sizing. What was a US size 12 dress over 50 years ago is now a US size 8 dress. Europe hasn't followed suit.
I don't know if this is the case throughout Europe, but in Germany Subway's sandwiches are classified as sweets because the ingredients - especially the bread - contain an abnormal amount of sugar.
In most of Europe USA bread would be considered as cake because of it's sweetness.
All White Bread recipes have added sugar. The Brits invented 'American White Bread" for their Afternoon Tea to look more refined than a peasant's loaf with a crunchy crust. Look up any British recipe for White Bread, you can eliminate the sugar and the Tea.
Subway aren't allowed to call it bread here in Ireland, it's classified as cake because it contains so much sugar. So unhealthy, kind of defeats the whole idea of the sandwich in the first place.
The mass produced chicken for most takeaways and supermarkets in the USA is a cornish cross chicken ( that's the breed) they are hatched and can be slaughtered in 8 weeks. It is a cross bred chicken but it isn't gmo the food it is feed is gmo though. In the UK we do not use the cornish cross yet and of course no animals in the UK are fed any gmo foods as its illegal to feed to humans and animals.
8 weeks, really? this may (partially) explain their size. In my country (on the other side of the globe) it's typically six weeks (42 days), even in "organic" home farms. The standard allows 5 weeks for 1.4-1.6 kg. gross weight, 6 weeks, or 7 weeks max for 2.5-3 kg gross weight. it seems that one more week won't add any more value.

It's not just portion sizes but US McDonald's products (and probably other chains as well) have a higher fat rate, more salt and more calories than most European products, even if you account for size differences.
Besides, what are people actually eating? How many choose S/M/L as single portion, do they share/keep left-overs for next day...??
As I remember, they don't salt the fries at all in Europe! I tried KFC and McDonald's in the UK, the Netherlands and Finland. And I was angry about lack of salt on potatoes.
Our McDonald's also tried that standard for a year or something, but people disliked it and they go back to salt in fries.

Most interesting to me is the difference in ingredients rather than size..for instance McDonald's fries in UK have three ingredients, potatoes, salt and the cooking oil. As far as I can tell they don't add any colouring to the fries in the US, they add Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate which is basically the same thing as E450 - a stabiliser (which helps the fries *maintain* their colour). E450 is also listed in the ingredients for the fries in Finnish McDonald's, so it's not unheard of in Europe as an ingredient. The beef flavouring on the other hand is odd.

I saw another video where I think they said there were 19 ingredients in US McDonald's fries, compared to three in the UK. Why? They're already delicious!

As a 19 year old on my first USA trip I loved the large meals but by day 2 I was choosing the small or medium meal. I actually lost weight as I was skipping lunch as the struggle to eat the volume & calories was too much. In future trips I was prepared to eat breakfast & skip lunch. When I lived there I needed to cook my own foods as I could live off the take away food after a few days

It's not just the size, there are also the ingredients, which are not published but due to different laws the UK (and other places, llike in other European countris) the US ones most likely have more chimicals.
Weight is also problematic as a measure. A check of the Big Mac, which was similar in weight, on both websites show that the US Big mac has almost 100 calories more than the UK one (590 vs 493).
What I don't understand about places with unlimited refils: why would you ever get a large when you can just pay for a small and keep refilling?
I remember serving an American at a McD in Skegness who ordered the XL. He said: 'Yo boi, I's ordered the XL and ya'll serve me this weeny cup? It ain't evens holding my whizz, ya hear me boi?'

the cup lids have those bubbles for ease of determining what's inside. you can ask for diet cola for example amd they will push one of the bubbles down, so if you are with friends/family and order more stuff together, you know which drinks are diet ones.

I've been travelling a lot around the world, and regardless of what your video says. I know there's a huge difference in portions. From Vietnam to European countries, to Santa Monica LA. The portions in the US are disgustingly big compared to Europe. Every time I'm in the US it's amazing to me the portion I recieve: soon as I look for a quality restaurant however, the prizes are insane. For even a mid tier restaurant the prices are insanely high. But as long as you're looking for garbage food level, US will hammer you with it at the lowest price
Garbage food is promoted there, it yields more profit for the health industry.
They main issue seems to be the sizes of drinks. I mean, the small US cup was usually about the size of the large UK one. So in the UK your drink intake would be at a max of about 200kcal and in the US that's the minimum. Provided you drink the whole thing. And it's not just calories, the drinks probably have more sugar in them than the food items.
Having said that, I am actually more shocked at the scammy tactics seen at play here; Burger King and Starbucks, I'm looking at you.
TBF to Starbucks im pretty sure it is the cup size that is listed, but they dont fill the cups all the way expecting people to add milk to a black coffee which is what was ordered and with the other coffees the foam would prevent the cup from being completely filled. The chips on the other hand are a scam from most places, the McDonalds near me they dont bother to fill a large chip so you dont get any more that you would if you ordered a medium.
Keep in mind that UK is still a country with big portions compared to other places in Europe - in Romania the mc chicken nuggets go up to 9 pcs max, and other food items tend to have sizes extra to rest of Europe.
Most of europe do have 15 or 20 pieces tho, nordics and (unless it changed in the past year) Germany have 20pcs. Most people don't go for larger than 9 though.

Im from the UK & the 1st time we went to Florida on holiday we couldn't get over the portion size of everything out there. Both a large McDonald's/burger king in UK was a medium out there. Everything is just huge. Also the same drinks/sweets taste different in each country because the US had additives that are banned in UK/Europe. Dr Pepper/Mountain Dew tastes totally different, also skittles & Starburst are different, all because of the additives.
I live in Austria now for almost 2 years. There even are differences between Austria and Germany. Austia's BK has a 4th size in drinks - "King Size" is 750ml and the largest you can get... In Germany the largest is 500ml

Macdo in france advertise mostly on the freshness and the quality of their product. Like AOP cheese (real cheese with protected origin), homegrown beef and that kind of stuff. Like we have the signature burgers, which are more expensive but supposedly with better quality. But also everyone complain that they are now very expensive for a fast food (a best of big mac menu is like 9€). The approach is totally different for the 2 market i think

The size of dinner plates has grown in the UK and with the increase in the size of the plates we have had an increase in people with obesity. I have a dinner plate I bought in the 1970s and it is far smaller than the dinner plates they sell now.
When I went to the USA in the 1970s I thought the family I stayed with was buying catering packs until I went into a supermarket and found that everything was that size! And yet, the cucumbers and packs of butter were tiny compared with the UK!

You have to watch too the ingredients of the food. Here in Europe (not only in UK) we have forbidden ingredients or a maximum quantity permited (like sugar and salt) in a portion.
And I suppose the diference of volume in USA and UK chicken is the breed of said chicken. I remember eating this big and dry chicken in Canada in a pair of places. My group of friends remember it 9 years after eating it because it was not very palatable for our standars.
Considering the customer is paying most of the staff wages with tips US portions should be bigger .

I think for pizza, Europeans might be more likely to have one to themselves more often, and Americans' default is splitting a pizza between multiple people and/or having leftovers in the fridge. You can get a personal pan pizza too, but it's not the default go-to, but like a "oh yeah, that's a thing too."
Hi from Italy! I'm sure someone else has already said it, but venti in italian means twenty on its own. There is no ventitwenty or whatever he said 😂 Also in Italy pizza diameter is usually about 30 cm more or less (it depends on the thickness, the quantity of dough is the same, but it can be thinner and larger or a bit more thick and smaller). That is more or less 12 inches. BUT each person gets their own pizza! If we share, it means you get half of my pizza and I get half of yours, maybe because neither of us could choose between the same two toppings 😂

as an Italian, for me that pizza is terrible 🤣. However, Burger King is bad as practically the medium size is almost the same as the small one and I understood that if they come to the United States it's by chance If I ever went to a fast food restaurant I would have to take small measures and I would also struggle to finish that drink. At most I'll take sparkling water like I always do :-)

About the drinks - it's because of angle... The US drinks were filmed from more above position - while UK ones were filmed more in table level.....
For me the UK is the European USA, more similar to the US than to the rest of Europe... I would like to see comparisons to the portions in e.g. Italy... But why would anyone eat at McDonald's in Italy?

I was expecting this video to be meals on plates, not fast food. Dine in restaurants have very different foods to fast foods. Food Wars was only fast food, until they met up in UK and went to dine in restaurants.

I had never seen a venti in the Netherlands. I didn't see one until my vacation in Curaçao where they use the US standard sizes.
Portions are even smaller in germany.. dominos for example: medium (28cm) 11,02", large is 32cm 12,6"...

Yesterday I was waiting for a Burger I had ordered, a proper burger made from hung beef that was succulent and still slightly pink in the middle, quality beef. At the same time there was an American tourist in the queue who on seeing the prices was complaining that the burgers were overpriced, and she could get one much cheaper and a bigger one at MacDonalds. That to me shows what Americans are after, cheap low quality food to fill a hole, not a quality product that you sit down and enjoy every time you take a bite from it. Oh, and by the way, she was rather large!

Those cookie portions are a bit misleading. the way that works is when you buy a dozen you get a discount and when you buy 3 dozen you get a bigger discount. they won't tell you no you can't have 3 cookies, you just get them at the price of 3 individual cookies whereas in the UK you'd already get a discount for buying 3.
Ice and Water have the same volume (and same weight). You can test it yourself: mark a waterline on a glas and fill it with ice and water and let it sit. The waterline won´t change a bit after the ice melted. So no, there won`t be more after.
Ice has a larger volume than water but the same weight as the original fluid frozen. That's why you shouldn't freeze anything in a sealed container unless you leave an air gap and you should never freeze liquids in glass bottles.

The drinks in the first clip may look the same, but it's just the perspective because they do the same shape of cup for each size but just make the cup itself larger or smaller. So the angles are the same per cup size to make it look taller or squatter, but the volume is altered.

If anything, it would decrease the volume since water expands when frozen, so the melted ice would displace less of the fluid.
The extra large pizza with 6 slices (instead of the more typical 8) is an intentional copy of New York style pizzas - which are often sold as street food, in single pieces. That's Papa Johns' approach at least - they won't sell their "New York Style" pizzas in any size but extra large. Not sure about Domino's...

You are missing a CRITICAL part of the sizes.
Medium size is in all countries not worth it. It mostly has the worst food/price ratio.
This makes the consumer think: "For just 3$ more, I can get the large option!"
You weirdly have a seize in between which could make you in certain situations choose large vs super large. "I don't want to cook tonmmorow and will keep them" or "I'll just pay a little extra and throw the rest (definitely!) away".
If you have ever seen fast food chains from the inside you will realize that medium cups seem to be almost out of stock. It's just that they are so bad for the customer regarding the price that they will be happy with the small option and all other customers will upgrade to the big one.
They also use a different psychological effect. "Saving money by paying more". Normally this can make a lot of sense if you buy goods like shampoo that you can keep forever. Over a couple of month you'll indeed save some percentage with a initial greater investment. With food it's different. You don't necessarily have more hunger but by slightly paying more you get more. It would be a shame if you would let it go to waste. You can eat it but you will surpass your needed calory intake. Most people won't eat fast food if it's 1 or 2 days old. Instead you are already at the next fast food chain ordering something to "fresh" or something that is "only avaible today!".

its def true. when I watch an american brings up his 1 gallon sippy-cup to drink coffee or soda from, I do not understand how you got to thinking that is normal.
With the coffee, they measured the liquid. What should be looking into is how many coffee shots go into the different sizes and sometimes the only difference between a small and medium is the hot water and had the same amount of coffee in.
There are places in the UK that do even larger pizzas, but they're not chains. There was one near my work that did a 24" pizza. The students loved it.
I can’t imagine getting a regular burger menu including an absurd amount of fries and softdrink in the us and being able to eat everything without stomach issues. I struggle with this even with our European sizes, you have to consider fries are usually just a side dish so I find those portions crazy 😅

This assumes US fluid ounces are the same as UK fluid ounces. They aren't, just like pints, quarts and gallons are different, too. The US measures are 'customary', not Imperial.
It's strange that they didn't just use millilitres considering they weighed the food in grams. That would have avoided any confusion.

The biggest coffee chain in the Uk got into trouble a few years sgo because the medium and large were the same volume. They had just made the large cup slightly slimmer and taller.
As a kid I worked at McD and we were told to fill the (same sized) fry bag only half for the small fries and full for the medium fries. Nobody really did that. So I think this concept persists.
The domino pizza sizes (11,5" vs 12") might be due to metric vs imperial as 11.5" is roughly 30cm ... so no discrimination just cultural
differences.
As for the coffee: go to an Italian restaurant (in Italy, mind you), order a coffee and you'll get a half ounce of coffee - which is actually worth drinking and enjoying.
I would struggle to eat the KFC UK regular fries. The American sizes just make me feel queasy.
It's crazy that the US McD/BK soft drink sizes are roughly double of the EU sizes.. and the US version has even more calories thanks to the high-fructose corn syrup. I'm not surprised about the obesity problems..

I got my fast food cultural shock back in the early 90s when visiting my aunt and uncle in California. My uncle warned us about the US portion sizes, so we ordered small burgers with fries and it turned out both the burger and the fries were bigger than a large order back home. Oh and it came with what I can only describe as a bucket of coke

I can't believe that the cold drinks sizes at McDonalds or BK are so different. We have our large drink is smaller than the US Small Drink which is absolutely ridiculous. No wonder the fast food craving American Citizens are much larger than their UK counterparts in general. It never ceases to amaze me. With KFC, even the small 6 piece bucket is a sharing one, is the US small classed as a sharing bucket? I would love to know!

Unlimited drink refills are useless in Australia, no one drinks more than 430ml.
