The reason FFXIII music can feel straight forward at first is because the game has a big theme of fate and predestined choices. this is reflected in the game and how it holds your hand for so long and gets called linear. The linearity is the point till you reach parts where music like this plays. And now your unbound. And you realize how vast yet scary the world is. This game is the epitome of ludo-narrative consistency.

Indeed SCARY cuz the moment the game opens up almost EVERY creature you encounter can fuck you up in seconds.
You are NOT prepared for this.

ACTUALLY THE VOCAL/VOICE IN "DUST TO DUST" YOU HEAR IS MASASHI'S WIFE!!! Matsue Hamauzu is a singer and composer. They have a daughter, and she is a composer too!Family of composers.

    "Nothing left to fear, l'Cie
    Cradled in eternity,
Shore of sand, your fate awaits
    Oh, surrender in the light"
Dust to Dust plays in the hometown of the two protagonists, Vanille and Fang, from the planet below, Gran Pulse. You arrive here a little before the final act of the game. They haven't been home in who knows how long, and when you arrive, you find that the entire surrounding area is a desert of crystal dust, the town is overrun with cieth (monsters), not a soul in sight, nothing but rusty buildings and silence. This song is all you hear, even the battles don't interrupt the music, one of my favourite techniques when it comes to making a song impact the player.
The lyrics are quite literally telling the tale of these two protagonists, both their past, present, and their future. This kinda leads into Fang's Theme, Fang is a more of an established character, she's already completed her part of the story, so her theme instead focuses more on a sense of freedom and could be seen as a theme for the entire party. Dust to Dust would be much more accurate as a character theme for both her and Vanille, though Vanille plays a much bigger role in this story and therefore has a theme of her own. And yes, Fang is absolutely a Dragoon, her weapon is a double bladed lance and her special ability is literally HIGHWIND.
It was completely unintentional, but this pairing worked out pretty well.

1:06 Hey Jesse, just a heads up. Hamauzu left Square's music team in 2010. He went on to make his own studio, Monomusik, to expand his field and works with other collaborators like Imeraut. He has said that he'll work more with square (looking at FFXIII-2/3 and FFVII remake and rebirth), and he's under Monomusik inc in most credits nowadays.

You can truly hear when Mr. Hamauzu has worked on a track in Final Fantasy VII Remake, as I feel the Final Fantasy XIII vibes in the music :) he has his own unique style of composition, which I love just as much as Mr. Uematsu's. Just chilling and incredible...

First of all, the setting of ff13 is quite unique compared to all the other games. Its much more sci-fi in nature, hundreds of years ahead of today. Humanity lives on an artificially created moon, and the planet below is a hostile, untamed, scifi wilderness. Basically, imagine the majority of the game having the tech vibe of the Gold Saucer from ff7 rebirth.
Fang's Theme is kinda weird. Without going into to many details, the theme is more about key moments in the story that involve her (and also where she comes from: a wild, untamed wilderness) rather than the character herself. Theres a good reason for that, as she's much more of a "blank slate" type of character, and doesn't have much history.
But, to be fair, it doesn't really match her personality, as most character themes do (even other character themes in this game), and is more representative of how the character fits into the rest of the story. She's more of a strong willed, stoic character, and her theme is more about moments of freedom and feeling liberated. (which is a goal of the entire party, including her) It just so happens she is often a big contributor to that goal.
So I'd say its fitting, it just focuses on the present/future of the character, unlike most themes, which typically represent already established things, like a characters past or personality.

That surreal moment when you reach Oerba for the first time and Dust to Dust starts playing... The emotions Fang and Vanille must've felt seeing their hometown centuries later.

Very true, Oerba looking the most 20/21th century-ish while everything else thus far has looked futuristic probably subtly makes you feel a sadness you can't quite understand. Its as if the game itself is saying your time has long since come and gone. Really helps imagine what Fang and Vanille was feeling.

I love the part of the game Dust to Dust plays at. Don't know if you'll ever have the chance to give 13 a try, but I'll keep things vague anyway just incase you maybe do someday. It does play near the endgame and it's kind of this game's To Zanarkand. The best part imo is it plays even during battles in this area of the game.

Dust to Dust stood out immediately to me, as it plays in a pretty bleak location, setting the mood quite well. It is pretty late in the game, as you guessed. Top 5 song in the game for me. A few other songs also have vocals (some in English), like Will To Fight, The Sunleth Waterscape, The Gapra Whitewood, and The Vestige.
Fang's Theme has always felt more like a battle anthem or overall game theme to me than a character theme (it's also similar to some of the early intro themes), as like you said it's somewhat too generic to be descriptive of the character, although some might say "battle is her theme". Still a good song.

Awesome to see this one, Dust to Dust is an easy contender for my favourite piece in XIII, and probably my favourite part of the game too. I don't want to be too specific so it plays in an area later on in the game, and a very effective touch is that it doesn't cut out for the combat music, this plays the entire time.

For Dust to Dust: The setting of the game is a high-tech, sci-fi setting, being on a gargantuan, practically moon-sized artificial planet for the most part until later into the game when the party travels to the world below. This theme plays when the characters come upon the town some of the party is from which has been abandoned and left in ruin for a long time, but the song encapsulates both the sadness the characters are feeling knowing the people they love are long gone, as well as the player's (possibly) shock, since the town is what we would consider a modern town under a highway. It's sort of a "this could have been our world" moment.
For Fang's Theme: The first few times we see Fang, she's kind of swooping in to do something badass, rescuing one character, lassoing a flying monster to let the party fly on it, and she's the archetypal Dragoon for the series. The theme was probably made to embody the free spirit and energy of the wind. Despite the sadness and weight of the burden she bore throughout her past, she has a very infectious optimism and the theme very much fits her!

FFXIII was really not that bad honestly, was it different? Yeah sure, but it wasn't bad imo
Basically the team behind this game (and the whole trilogy) is quite similar to 7 : Nojima, same writer, Nomura on character design, Hamauzu as a composer, Kitase as the producer for the game, even Rebirth's director, Hamaguchi-san, worked on the trilogy

I agree with your thoughts about both, more specifically about Fang's Theme.
When I was playing the game and I heard this song, I never associated it with Fang. I thought it was just the theme for the current bombastic situation that was happening or about to happen. When I was looking for Fang's theme on the internet, I came across one that was fanmade, and I thought that was actually the main theme, and thought "wow! never heard it throughout the game, must have been unreleased or something", but then I realized it was fanmade. A fanmade one sounded x100 better as a character theme than this one. I like this arrangement, I really like it but never do I associate it with a specific character.

Leading up to release, I had a LOT of doubts about this game. As one of the oddballs who loved 12 at launch, 13 looked too on-rails and restricted. Maybe it's cliche to mention the endless corridors but it felt like a 180 from their last game. But I listened to the soundtrack and songs like Fang's Theme swayed me. Absolutely gorgeous, it just oozes freedom and adventure! Which is unfortunately something the game lacks, imo at least. My favorite song from the soundtrack though is the Sunleth Waterscape. That song has no reason to go so hard

The 2nd song was definitely familiar but I was surprised to see it associated specifically with Fang. I don't think it particularly did anything that fits only Fang or speaks more to her plot or personality over the other characters. I perceive that track as more of a general battle theme. And yeah, Fang is a warrior but everyone in the party is a fighter of some sort, at least once they find their resolve.

This is how I'm learning that song is called Fang's Theme. This song has close to nothing to do with Fang and even plays the theme of an unrelated character within it. This feels very arbitrary and like it could have been a last second decision to name it that because Fang was the only character without their own theme.
It's still a fun song and I will be using this knowledge to seek it out in the future, but that is shocking.

Ff games can be either high fantasy or techy as heck and FF13 is probably the farthest on the end of techy spectrum. I do appreciate it for that.

  • @dawk7
    @dawk7 4 месяца назад +5

Aaah, FF13... Gosh, this game. There are so many things to say about this game, but I think the best way I can summarize it...
This game is, first and foremost, a Tragedy in the purest narrative way possible. It's... something I would heavily hesitate to call a good game, because the story feels like a struggle, the gameplay feels like a struggle, the soundtrack feels like a struggle. It's an all-around heavy package. To this day I feel like it's a game that'd make for a good movie, but is instead an incredibly terrible interactive piece of media.
That's a heavy generalization, but the relevance of that is in the music. The soundtrack to this game is, at its core, a struggle against fate. Melodies singing about hope, tracks full of defiant energy, and this?
This is a song of walking when there's no more road to walk.

  • @Varizen87
    @Varizen87 4 месяца назад +1

Spoiler Free FF13. It takes place in a Fantasy Future. It takes place over 13 days. The main theme involves fighting against or accepting ones fate. The main cast is branded by god like beings at the beginning and have become pariahs who must figure out what they've been branded to do. The story is interesting and very philosophical, but the game play suffers from Square Enix being CEOed by Yoichi Wada who just made all the most terrible financial decisions for a decade. The Game suffers from trying to appeal to everyone and instead being for no one.
Don't get me wrong. It's still interesting and had great ideas VERY ahead of its time, but it's less an RPG and more a corridor runner which frustrates long time fans. It's by no means a bad game. It's just not a great Final Fantasy.
