I finally found the way to describe it:
Zachary's VA of Tighnari matches the energy of the nerdy friend who dealt with the himbo jock for far too long and now has both infinite patience and no patience at all.
He sounds so perfectly Tighnari that it's jarring, but so perfect
This is so weirdly specific, but it makes so much sense.
Mood
It sounds like a va being constantly suppressed and rushed to the point where he either doesn't know what to do or tries to sound like a generic nerd character
In this case, the jock friend is represented by Cyno and his jokes, aaand by the academia being annoying.
I told this to my non-Genshiner roommie, and even she got it. Good job 👏
in my opinion Zachary's voice makes tighnari sound kinda like he's done with everything y'know? like that ''why the hell do i still work here'' type of attitude and i think it fits the character really well!

i like it! the deadpan sass fits his character well; his “why is there a chest here” is probably my favorite. his genuine confusion seems more realistic, like yeah, why tf IS there a chest out in the open world
Exactly what you two are saying, I am in love with the whole deadpan "I just don't care anymore" vibe, based on all the things Tighnari says it's just so fitting and adds even more to his sass
He sounds like someone who would actually eat a mushroom to see if it's poisonous or not just because he doesn't give a shit if he dies or not as long as it means he wouldn't have to deal with people's stupidity anymore. And I'm here for it.
That kind of attitude is perfect for Tighnari, I kind of really feel it like when Cyno keeps churning out the dad jokes.
I HAD THE SAME VIBE-
I think many fans don't realize/don't think about just how rushed this recording was. Gordon had to record EVERY single line Tighnari EVER said within the past 7 months PLUS everything for the new version where Tighnari is heavily featured in the main event. And all that within only a few weeks.
(Long explaination following but tl;dr: Huge respect for Gordon)
Genshin officially anmounced they fired "he who shall not be named" (he's Voldemort now) on 16. Feb. So even if we assume the casting and signing for a new VA was done within only 2 weeks (unrealistic), and they were recording right until the last day before the update (also unrealistic, usually voice over should be done weeks in advance, certainly at least several days before the maintanance),
so best case Gordon had at the veeery most 2 months. More realistically, he probably had between 4-6 weeks to record EVERYTHING.
And it's not "only" all his profile voice lines, story quest, archon quest, upcoming event. It's so many little things that add up too like teapot, TCG etc.
Huge respect for Gordon that he stepped up and took the job despite the time pressure and the negative association of who previously did the job.
I think he did a good job all things considered. I think he could be even better if given more time, but I'm sure just like with Barbara, once they have more time Hoyo will rerecord some of the lines with him and update them.
Usually the VAs have time to figure out with the director just how exactly the character should sound and "get a feel" for them. And then even noises like groans will have many takes until it's perfect. Gordon didn't have all that. Like CyYu said, he was probably already half way through the lines until he really got a feel for Tighnari's personality and I can imagine "one time lines" (like story and archon quest, you can only play it once and most people never relisten to archive) he might have only had a single take and then they moved on so he could focus on battle lines players will hear countless times. That would also explain why he sounds so "settled into the role" in some lines (and those are amazing!!) but still a bit unsure how Tighnari should sound in some others (and those are still good).
I'm no VA myself so this is all only an educated guess. But fact is: Gordon had veeery little time to do a looot of work and still delivered. So cut him some slack that not every line is perfect YET and appreciate that he still did great work.
Okay, with that context that's quite impressive. I hope they'll give Zach the Barbara VA treatment where he gets some extra time to polish the recordings. Personally listening thus far I'm kind of on the fence with it, but that's mostly due to me either 1, not being used tot the voice itself yet and 2, the whole context you gave with him not having a lot time and 3, I kinda expected the voice to be a bit more softer? Can't exactly describe it honestly.
I haven't gotten Tighnari yet, but I can see myself getting used to his new VA, so props to Zach!
None of the performance is the va's fault, not only was he rushed but he's also being held back by the director telling him to be mika 2.0,
I agree with you. Also, it’s impressive that he was able to record so many voicelines in a short time. But I feel that maybe he had to kind of rush through all the voicelines and was probably under a bit of stress.
Well, lines CAN be rerecorded, probably over time they'll touch upon the lines they feel are weaker
@@MountSec You're definitely right with that. Like I stated in my previous response: I do hope that he'll get a Barbara V.A situation treatment where he can rerecord the voices in the future on the parts that weren't properly delivered.
I myself only was able to hear his in-game battle voices due to not only him on the recent event but also the fact that I don't have him. Then again, I'm not thinking of getting him anytime soon.
I'm really glad Tighnari finally got a voice, it was really awkward how he silently stared at you during the archon quests.

Paimon’s voice in the Eng dub was actually softer at the beginning of the game, you can hear the voice get higher and higher through the archon quests.
That's why I changed from playing in English to the other languages as the game progressed. Paimon keeps getting higher-pitched in Eng. (I blame the director, not the VA).
@@Ace_Maus From what I remember the change in Paimon's tone was due to the fact that the og version left the VA with sore throat after a while and they adjusted the direction so that it was less straining the VA's voice

@@lauriee5364 Yep, exactly what you said. Also closer to the launch of the game, Corina mentioned in streams that doing Paimon’s voice doesn’t strain them at all. They would also regularly mention that VAs should never do a voice that causes them pain bc that risks damaging their voice, so that was never a problem with Paimon
I felt like she was getting more attitude in her voice in the newer archon quests as well. Like before it was like "nyaa don't make me angwy òwó", now it's like "what the fuck did you just say you little shit òwó ". Or maybe it's just me idk xd
I prefer this voice because it sounds closer to the other languages AND he doesn't sound as aggressive (OOC) as he did before. He's finally as adorable, yet subtly sassy, as all other dubs.
I agree. The previous voice really overdid it with the sass, it sounded like he was mocking everyone rather than being sarcastic.

I like how Zachary Gordon portrayed Tighnari. I get a hint of leader/sassy/tough/nerdy all together and is very close to how the Japanese VA delivered her lines. I mostly only use Japanese audio but I was very excited to see how Tighnari’s voice would sound with Zachary doing it and it’s really good!! I also finally get to hear all the other English VA as well 😅🤭
I don’t agree, jp VA sounds like a wise sweet preteen and is voiced by a woman, and this VA sounds like an adult man, kind of sarcastic, nerdy and deadpan. JP VA is the worst cast in the whole game imo. This is closer to CN.

i read a tweet that said zachary’s performance makes him sound like a kind camp counselor who is really knowledgeable, and kinda done with everyone’s shit, but is still very nice and big-hearted- which i completely agree with, and i think it fits his character perfectly!! he isn’t aggressive to the point of sounding a bit arrogant in some of his lines (like i think the previous scumbag did)..) zachary did a wonderful job

Idk… In the very first Sumeru quest Collei says that Tighnari “may seem harsh at first”, when Paimon doubts him. No hate to Zachary, btw! I’m just saying that there was probably a good reason that the first direction they chose for Tighnari was a bit more agressive (or assertive I guess). And the current Tighnari doesn’t strike me as “harsh”…

It will take some time to get used to, but this is better than getting an impersonator of the previous voice. I can respect that direction they took though. I really did think they would get someone close to the previous voice. Goodluck to Zachary.
There is a tuber that does Genshin videos as Tighnari while imitating the first VA and NGL, it was uncomfortable to watch even as someone who was not personally affected by the whole situation. So glad they decided to not try to "imitate" the first performance and go in a new direction

@@atriyakoller136 I don't remember, honestly. It was a recommended video just the other day and I thought it was a standard guide video to "find this secret chest". So it was really rattling when it wasn't that at all.
@@mrminecraftcubeable I think if more people replayed or watched the archon quests their opinions would change. Tighnari is still sassy as ever, just with less overacting, which wasn't right for the part or in line with the other dubs in the first place. I enjoyed the original performance at the time but my opinions now is that it wasn't really better than what we have now, and pointless to keep going on about how something was better given the situation.
I'm not a VA, but after hearing these lines my gut feeling is that they had Zach record the profile and battle lines *first*, because they were a higher priority to get finished, and then went through the story lines somewhat chronologically, and then swung back to the relevant profile lines.
That's why his first Cyno line and 2nd Cyno line sound so different: one is there by default, while the other is unlocked after you finish the archon quest. I think Zach hadn't found Tighnari's voice yet, but by that point he'd done basically all of Tighnari's lines, and by the time of the 2nd About Cyno Line, he was a lot more secure in his delivery of the character.

The "sass" you love so dearly to the point of missing every single other aspect about his character is still there!! He does sound more caring now, and that's lovely! Because he is! Please he is tired about silly adventurers but that's anyone who's ever had to work on customer service ever, honestly. He is super kind and lovely on JP, I can't speak for CN since I only understand JP but CN also sounds nice and gentle. English team tends to make characters meaner for no reason (i.e Ayato) and it ends up with people having these warped perceptions of them, so please always remember this🥺 Tighnari is full of love and care, I mean this is the man who single handedly raised Collei. He took in this child that was so incredibly traumatised and raised her to be the lovely young lady we see today. Give his new voice a chance, the VA did a great job and the newly found kindness in him fits Tighnari very well♡

It fr feels like a lot of people that use nerdy as a complaint don't realize what nerd means. It's like they imagine the stereotype appearance of some awkward kid who gets bullied for sounding "too soft and weak" and forget that everyone is a nerd about something. It usually goes hand in hand with obsessions (using obsession lightly/affectionately.) You gain so much knowledge about the things you adore and gain that hyper eagerness to want to share it with others to spread the happiness that obsession gives you.
You can be a hot stud and be incredibly nerdy at the same time. There's no "You have to be one or the other," just let people be nerds in whatever way makes them happiest to express themselves. I agree wholeheartedly with your comment!

Honestly, I think CyYu said everything I was thinking. Like Tigh hasn't lost his sas, it's just a different type of sas. I think it's just something everyone needs to get used to. I like that Tighnari is be default polite and scholarly. He's an educator and will prioritize being understood. Raising Collei brought that out of him more. When hanging with his friends, tho, of course he'll be more relaxed and drop formalities. I really hope we get a second Tighnari story quest!!!

I love Zachary as Tighnari. For some reason his voice immediately clicked for me when I heard him.
If you listen to what other characters say about Tighnari, you will quickly realise that NONE of them mention Tighnari being particularly sassy. In fact, they rave about how kind and considerate he is. Tighnari was never actually written to be as sassy as his old VA made him, and it's not bad to like that interpretation, but the evidence shows he was never meant to be snarky/sassy. If he was, at least ONE character would mention it. Even when Kaveh built a house in a WITHERING ZONE Tignhari was still exceptionally kind to him and even invited him over for tea.
Tighnari is just your typical Akedemiya scholar: Fed up with the system and all its' overbearing red tape. He will express his distaste for Akedemiya policy, but a lot of people got the impression that Tighnari expresses this distaste towards people (especially from his line about adventurers eating random things in the forest)

Weird that they took 8 months for Tighnari to get a voice actor but it sounds really good, they were probably trying to find the perfect voice actor for him and they did in the end, I don't get the people that say it sounds like Mika cause it really doesn't, and the sass and sarcasm is great! Lmao, 8 months ago was around the release of Sumeru/3.0. It definitely has only been a handful of months.
I always portrayed Tighnari's ideal voice to be more caring but also be sassy in times where he is fed up with the crap that he gets (whenever that happens) also I find his voice to be amazing! I'm glad Hoyo finally added a voice for him after all those months
it really does work like that. you recoil because you're used to hearing the old voice. But after a few runs i already forgot how tighnari used to sound. I think zachary really brought a new flavor to nari boy's voice lines. ❤

When I first met tighnari in game his voice felt soooooo out of place, it took me awhile to get used to it since it didn’t seem to match his appearance much. But this new voice?? It suits him so naturally!!

This voice is a million times so fucking good; they nailed it!! And so did Zach!! The lock me up quote sounds different in my imagination he sounded like a wanna-be tough guy trying too hard to seem important, while here he sounds legitimately like he's rolling his eyes and even a slight bit threatening. It really shines through that he's not someone you want to cross, while still sounding kind, caring and way more approachable somehow. This really portrays the character that can get along with Cyno, is a prominent figure of authority himself, as well as sort of paternal figure to Collei, a kind and genuine guy who really cares for and will protect those under his wing.
I have no idea how Zach did that, but goddang, I'm so on board with his work! I'm looking forward to the upcoming event with him!
6:26 on the topic of the burst voice lines i really like the second one, "One with the forest!", because the imagery previous voice we all seemed to collectively hallucinate had a more nasally "forest" that sounded more like "fahrest" that just bothered me and this one is so much better

I think his voice is super cute!! I played all his quests in JP and to me his new Eng voice sounds more tonally similar to that, straightforward, no nonsense, but caring.

I love how Cy knows exactly what to do and say to please we Cynonari fans lol. Anyways, Zachary did a great job so far, like he always was there. A promising actor/singer that deserves to grow nicely on this field of work. I even changed my game to EN voices to enjoy his voice more.
I did end up listening to him in the archive for his scenes to adapt. (Lacks the visuals, so it's just half the experience.) And his voice quality does from he's a good replacement to "this needs work."
I'm actually curious if less that two months is enough to do all these lines. These, the archon quest, AND story Quest dialogue. If he's in the new event with dead pan Alhaitham MC. add THOSE lines. (Holy crap)
Or did they rush a some. Because it is pretty obvious how inconsistent his voice can be.
But I agree with CyYu. Many of the characters highlight how kind he is. (As the Windblume points out. He and Albedo are pretty similar) And his voice does sound sweeter.
On the other hand, his sass went from openly hostile, to a BIT more subtle.
You kind of question IF he's being sarcastic or not sometimes. Which works for arrogant people like those in the academia. Since, they can be SO proud, they can overlook that he's insulating them thanks to his tone.
Except his Jail line, boy just went from "they won't do it" to "I DARE them" that was a full on threat.
Been maining our fox boy since drop. I love his voice and glad they finally gave him one! It’s soft and sweet while still being exhasperated. Happy I can use him now he has a voice and excited for the coming content with him! (And the whole Sumeru gang ofc)
I dropped Genshin ages ago but Zachary's portrayal of Tighnari is nice. I like how his voice changes based on context. Don't worry I'm definitely on board to catch hit Vtuber Cy Yu in Persona 3 Reload.
I personally love the new va, i get change is hard but people act like his performance is bad just because it isn't like their "headcanon ", each performance is different so it isn't going to be like the old one but it is actually closer to the Chinese and Japanese one so maybe their headcanon isn't so canon and they must accept it.
I really enjoy his new voice. When he talks about all his nerdy stuff it really sounds like he’s passionate about those things. He’s much more excited and energetic. Tho I haven’t really had any experiences with the older voice.

I really liked Tighnari's old voice, but with all that happened, when Mihoyo decided to recast him I was really exited to hear his new voice, but at the same time I wished a little bit for his old voice to remain the same (because like many people I don't like changes). I wasn't 100% convinced at first, but Zachary's version grew on me every day. Now I love his new voice and I think it fits him pretty well. Also it's sounds more similar to the japanese, chineese and korean ones.

Imo, before it was like a confident, slightly arrogant sass. Now, its more of a cheeky and sarcastic, light sass. Trying to get used to it but its good to hear fox boi speak again.

It’s a nice voice, more gentle and sarcastic, like the cn va? Though I definitely like the more lower pitched lines than the more high pitched ones. Maybe they’ll re-record some in the future? So crazy that they recorded so many lines in such a short time . And some lines were just straight up bangers, the “why is there a chest here?” makes me laugh

I had unfortunately started Tighnari's story quest right when everything about the og VA was unearthed, so decided to pause playing untill the new va arrived. Super excited to get used to the va through that story now!
I wish it was a combination of the voice that I had in my head and his new voice. I like the new ones softer voice for everything but wish he was a bit more sassy in tone in some parts but overall I like it and am glad he finally has a voice.
I glad I haven’t played his story quest on my alt account yet. I hope it gets updated so I can unlock and re-watch it all over again with a better experience 😂

Hopefully the next Sumeru event has some good Tighnari interaction with other characters. Tighnari had some great interactions during Windblume but we'll never get to hear them with Zachary.
I wasn't able to start right away on the sumeru archon questline and had to put off playing it for a while, and then the whole thing blew up and I had to put it off even longer. I'm glad I did though, I really love Zachary's delivery on the lines, he has such a sweet yet calming voice....I think I may even be a Tignari fan now
Zachary did such a great job with the voice lines. He sounds so much softer which fits him PERFECTLY.
