Just wanted to say how I appreciated how direct you were with recommendations and how clearly you articulated which axe would fit which living situation and the practicality behind each one. Was looking at the outdoor and small forest axes and despite the forest axe maybe being better for the long-term, seems like the outdoor axe would be the best place for me to start. Thanks for the video, very informative.
What about the Scandinavian Forest Axe? I own many of the GB axes and think that the best all around axe is the Scandinavian Forest Axe. It's big enough to chop large trees; but small enough to use with one hand. The real jack of all trades, but master of none.
I OWN THESE 3 GB AXES AND THE SCANDINAVIAN , AND OTHERS , AND AGREE THE SCANDI IS A GREAT OVERALL , BUT FOR ME IN THE BUSH THE SMALL FOREST IS THE PERFECT RUCKSACK PACK AXE .....ITS MY GO TO
Great video, very informative and you describe the uses very well. I wish I could afford the Outdoor however I had to opt for a SOG Tactical. Very light and does the job I want for hiking and bush crafting. Keep the videos coming. Thank you.
Great collection of fine tools... I ordered my first Gransfors Bruks Wildlife model last week and it arrived yesterday, i'm impressed with the workmanship and quality of this tool.. I feel better looking at your collection as i too have Fiskars in my collection and have not had problem one with any of them..The Finns have been making tools for a lot of years..
Thanks I read that before the local hardware store brought in the line, i was the first to buy Gerber ax made by Fiskars... The salesman said after a few weeks how do you like it? I told him to put Fiskars in stock... Great tool i own 4 of them now.. Last month was my first Gransfors Bruks Wildlife model.. excellent tool..
I guess when I think of taking something like the felling axe car camping, I am picturing using it to clear fallen timber across trails in lieu of a chainsaw, or in support of a chainsaw. Also, great for general vehicle emergency preparedness for route clearance in event of storm, fire, earthquake etc. Perhaps consider making a bracket or box for it, chuck a length of 38mm lay flat fire hose over the handle to protect it. Having said that my choice in my own little car is a limbing axe as standard, with maybe my awesome little arborists chainsaw as an option if shit might get serious, not much you can't do with a 16 inch bar if you put your mind to it! There's some sexual innuendo there to run with, but I'm just too tired...
Thanks for this video! I live in the center of a large US city and was going to get the small forest axe before watching this for day hikes and weekend camping trips. But all I need is the outdoor axe and just ordered one.
What about compared to their carving axes? I'm very intrigued with them, obviously designed for carving but I wonder how it compares to the small Forrest axe for general backpack adventures.
I know I'm late to this party, but ... well, I had the outdoor axe and sold it. It's top notch quality as always with GB. And in really it is like a quite better hawk. But in my eyes it merges the disadvantages of a hawk (less comfortable haft shape, not that secure grip at the end of the haft) and those of an axe (more difficult to change broken haft). I would like to get a hawk of this quality with this head's shape though.
@@MrJzlavallee Are you laughing at the fact that the Fiskars (x7, specifically) out performs the Outdoor axe in just about every way, but is over $200 cheaper?
These are tools with a purpose. You don't generally use pliers to tighten bolts, though you can... i won't tie a full size ax to my pack...though i can. For me....the smaller one is no doubt the way to go. I carry a 'hawk nearly everywhere i go. I have it when i need it. A large ax would be left at the cabin...next to several chain saws. That counts... Thank you
Thinking about getting into axe throwing. Which axe would you recommend for that? Obviously you wouldn't want to throw a GB axe being so expensive. But would you throw a Fiskars? The Outdoor axe seem like a nice little Tomahawk size like axe for throwing but would most likely be easily damage if thrown.
Thanks for this video :) I`ve been looking around axes some more and I decided that I am going to get one axe as that`s it. I barely ever need an axe as I am not allowed to take down trees (german laws -__-) but for general preparedness sake I am going to get a Hultafors Capenter`s Axe, which is sort of a bushcrafty midsized axe that also allowes for some detail work by choking up on the handle. It`s a 20 Inch Axe with a nearly two pounds heavy head (850gramm). It`s probably only gonna collect dust in my gear room but at least it`s there should I ever need an axe. Gransfors does produce a capenter`s axe aswell but it`s twice the price so nope, not gonna get that one xD
I used hockey tape on all my Gränsfors axes around the overstrike areas even the large splitting maul which has the collar and is their most practical axe for wood burners imo. The Ray Mears wilderness axe is also a great steal.
@Based in Solitude and you should WANT to strap it to the outside of your pack... you're right though because I see people do stupid shit all the time...
why talk so much it's like reading an article with slide pictures. Would have been much better to start the video sporting you using the axes, that's what a video is for, instead you give a headache by talking so many words on axes without even showing their size relative to your body. A waste of time.
i just checked your channel and see from your wide range of videos you are indeed a great source of video making advice. Sometimes, a talking video is what I do. Enjoyment was had by others. Only one wasting time is you, mang
right as if you have to be a film director to know a bad movie or a chef to know a badly prepared dish or a writer to know a bad article. You are wasting space on youtube with your babbling slideshow reviews. you should leave it as a blog with pictures it would eliminate the annoying voice too. You're right i wasted my time on your talking slideshow but was able to find real video reviews after.

Those three are the exact three I was looking at getting to be equipped for majority of tree working needs; thanks for this!
The axe designed by Lars falt is on my list cheers from the u s mate

+BCB never swung one unfortunately! But yes, it looks like a super handy tool
I have the Scandinavian Forest Axe. I agree with you, it is the best all round for me.

I love the small forest axe!
I got the Gransfors Bruks small forest ax for backpacking and bushcraft, best all around tool in my opinion!!

Gränsfors from Sweden actually. Best axes ever.
jes kg Fisksrs are Finnish. Read his actual comment.

mojaal Hi, which did you end up getting? Does it suit your hiking trips? I’m trying to decide between the two, for the same purpose.
I just got the outdoor axe. Love it

Cheers Pete, You forgot to mention the American Felling Axe is very capable in a self defense role. Good vid!!

hello can you please tell me how you painted your small forest axe handle?
Good discussion & video, but that Intro Violin music is awesome!!. so lively... who is that?
What about that Fiskars hatchet just to the right of them?
😂

The cold steel gang hatchet could be a good place to start. Its rather square so has a couple easy corners to increase
the odds of sticking
Scandanavian forest axe and Hunters Axe for the win
For me. It's the small forest amd scandinavian forest axes.

That fiskars axe should not just hang in the same room as the gränsfors bruks axes

An axe should be strapped to the outside of your pack....
@Grendel Heydrich he said "should be", didn't say "must be"... 🤓😉👉
That's not legal everywhere. Some places require them to be hidden away when travelling.
@Based in Solitude and you should WANT to strap it to the outside of your pack... you're right though because I see people do stupid shit all the time...
Nice Video, what Backpack is that?
thekoboldx thats a Frost River Summit Expedition Pack
Nice work on the video mate
The GBA sm forest axe will just fit into a 35L bag
The american felling is portable , if you want you can lol
