      Yep. I loved this ad for both its concept and its music in 1998/1999 when it was new... Caught it on VHS while I had the chance. Went on to become a *huge* fan of "24" years later... and when I dug out that old videotape and watched this again about 15 years ago... I laughed so hard upon recognizing her... I had no clue when it was new who I was seeing. :) Nina Myers, however, was such an evil bitch, it makes it hard for me to enjoy this ad in hindsight the way I originally did.

    Nostalgia is weird. what does and doesnt stay with us, sometimes seems to have no obvious rhyme or reason.
    i cant believe its been almost 20 years (1999 for the 2000 Jetta) now since this car commercial came out, much better song and music video than most of the videos that were actually on at the time. and for some reason it has always been in my head, so it obviously affected me in some way. now added to that it has the power of taking me back to a certain time and place. just a couple of quick years after my father passed. my first time living with a girlfriend, while things were still fresh and happy. was in the best shape of my life and giddy with thoughts of living some fantasy life in San Francisco.
    ive never owned a Volkswagen, and frankly i was just happy to have any car that works. so i cant say as to how well advertising works on me. but i did want to be in that car, driving down that street in the gentle rain, listening to that relaxing song with my girl.

      its so weird that a commercial of all things can bring back such strong and happy memories of that time. i had graduated in 90 but i hadnt really started living an actual adult life till about 98. so it makes me think of that time, of being on my own fir the first time and having my whole life ahead of me. and that first girlfriend i ever had a place with, and like i said we were all young and giddy after this trip we had taken to San Francisco and full of all these dreams of how we were going to move there and do all these things. this commercial use to come on and its one of the things i actually use to look forward to LOL.

      @@newwavepop I'm really glad it could bring back such strong memories for you. It came to me very quickly and I went for a walk to clear my head before trying a ruff mix (had to bring to the agency the next day). It was about 2am and I went to a 24hr Dunkin Donuts by my house. For some reason, I clearly recall how that coffee tasted, even two plus decades later. The idea was for it to be like a Twilight Zone/dream state for the two in the car. Maybe it's real & maybe it's not. I think I kind of locked into that and the coffee kind of brought me out of it. Either way, it was a lot of fun to do, and I'm incredibly grateful that people enjoyed my weird little track.

      @@mcylinder here i am another 5 years later and that song and commercial just popped into my head again and i had to hear it. just by chance or fate im not sure, but this simple little thing you knocked out has somehow become a part of my life that i always go back to. it represents such a specific happy period of my life, when so many things around me were changing. who can understand the things we hold on to, i LOVED this commercial and actually looked forward to it coming on but in realty i probably only saw it no more than 10 times. then i spent years having it occasionally pop into my head and wondering what that song was or how i could find it, i had a hard time even looking the commercial up because i really just remembered it was a car commercial. i didnt remember the make or model, i just remembered the vibe, that music and that visual of the light rain on the windshield and all the people going about their day in that lovely little neighborhood. thank you for a small thing that has brought some level of joy into my life for a very long time. that is what music and art are suppose to do but rarely accomplish.

      Peter DuCharme I worked in the AD world&Film world for many years&during this time period....This AD won a bunch of awards&Ive always believed the music in our spots was the key. Music has ruled my world and Iwish everybody surrendered to it~there is much power in it! So to reply about the re-airing of this-I wonder if the Agency was DBB in ‘99.....if it’s changed I’m not sure about the rights BUT I have noticed the last few years that companies have totally been recycling their ads which I think is brilliant for many reasons-major one is earth friendly¬ wasting a shot ton of money,2nd is why not tap the ole factory&relate to the generation who is listening&has the money:). For all those who were trying to find the artist and song-google-find the ad agency,production company first...even IMDb-all those tools have worked in the past....I had a leg up so it only took one call typically. Kudos to those of you who called and emailed VW directly because the have so many departments I was pleasantly surprised to read you guys got responses! Peter-Did you win any awards for this piece? Also maybe call your agent to see if they take requests for re-airing:)~During Covid it would be wise or maybe we can all hit up VW’s social media pages and request for them to do this 👊🏾✌🏽❤️🌎

      @@MettaBlissSister Thank you so much. The agency was Arnold Worldwide and the genius team responsible for all of the award winning VW ads were Lance Jensen & Alan Paffenbach. Excellent, open minded, creative guys. Arnold lost the account to Porter Bogusky and, in my opinion, VW's ads were never quite the same. Arnold had very creative, inspired people that gave VW 200%. A producer named Bill Goodell did a majority of the award winning spots and he does not get the credit he richly deserves. If you had a crazy idea, he'd make it happen AND have a back up plan. It was honor to be contracted by him and the rest of the VW crew.

      It is NOT the same New Orleans! As things go, things have to change, no? Unfortunately for New Orleans and Louisiana as a whole, The French Quarter is no longer a safe place to live, to browse, to walk. It’s beyond disheartening.
      I lived there from 1994-2020 and it was some amazing in the early days. Unfortunately investors and people who live in “other places” have come in and bought a lot of the property and have become either slum lords or have given in to the B&B (the ilegal ones with the apps) and are nothing more than absentee landlords.
      The crime is worse than ever. I visited the city again two years after leaving and I don’t care if I ever go back. It’s a nasty cesspool!

    • @mcylinder

      Thanks so much! There's kind of a story why VW changed ad agencies and threw away all of the cool that was built for their brand. The agency that transformed VW was Arnold Communications & many people contributed but the writing team of Paffenbach & Jensen were the ones that pushed the envelope. And won VW all those advertising awards...

    So @Peter DuCharme, what creative parts were you involved in for the making of this commercial?! It’s brilliant!

    • @mcylinder
      @mcylinder  4 года назад +6

      Just the music. The video editor is the extremely talented Andre Betz. He gave me a QuickTime with just a click at 118.43 bpm ( I still remember that number 20 years later). I wrote to that. Each interaction has it’s own vignette. Basketball kid was a kick drum, guys on truck was a backwards guitar, etc. Took about 3 hours to write. Never again did it ever come that easily.

    • @VictoryAviation
      @VictoryAviation 4 года назад +1

      Peter DuCharme WOW! So you essentially did the layering accents over the song to emphasize the movements, or you wrote the track as well?

    A few weeks ago I was waxing nostalgic, while driving my 2004 Jetta TDI Wagon thru a gentle rain.
    This song popped into my head, so I headed to RUclips and pulled up this Commercial while sitting at a traffic light.
    I was dumbfounded when I noticed the Windshield Wipers were moving in time to the beat... Every. Damn. Cycle.
    After 19 years, the Wiper Motors haven't shifted a Millisecond.
    Brought tears to my eyes... Those were good times. Things really did just come together, back then.
    I still remember them all:
    -- Synchronicity (above).
    -- Milky Way (Cabrio at Night).
    -- Big Day (Jetta VR6 Wedding Day).
    -- Trio/Da Da Da (Golf Stinky Easy-Chair).
    I did some research on the "Drivers Wanted" Ad Campaign, and "Big Day" (the Jetta VR6 "Race to the Wedding" Commercial) is *still* considered one of the greatest single Television Advertisements of all time... Ranks right up there with the original Apple Macintosh "1984" Super Bowl Ad.
    Gawd, I miss those days...

    • @Lumenary
      @Lumenary 2 года назад

      @@mcylinder Yeah, I was surprised, too...
      Even though the 2004 is an A4-Body (not to be confused with an Audi A4, which was built on the Passat B-Body) from the same era, the VW Standard Part IDs for many of the Electrical Components between the 1999.5/2000 A4s and the 2004 A4s are not the same...
      (And they are not just "Revisions" of the same Part, like [001 123 456 A] and [001 123 456 G]... A lot of Parts have completely different Numbers.)
      Unfortunately, the Wipers on my A6-Body Jetta from 2014 do not match... Kinda bummed at that.
