    Glad I stumbled on this. Needed a refresher, it's been 10 years since I built my 1156/i3, recently went to see how far I could update it. I needed a quick refresher on which Lynnfield Cores were from which family, and this video was perfect! Thank you!

    00:06 back on that day, this motherboard was such a huge deal!
    Amazing how some LGA 775 and most LGA 1156 motherboard were well constructed like this one, nowadays barely there is over than a PCi-e and x1 slot, usually for Wi-Fi and works for 2 through 4 years, instead of a decade and half like that!

      Thanks. You are welcome! Not sure you will notice any meaningful difference between your X3450 and X3470. The latter has a bit faster L3 cache (due to higher NB fequency), so it will provide 3 to 5% higher framerates. But the price for X3470 is not too high, so it might be a worthwhile upgarde.

    at 5:13 , its not true, hyper threading or SMT can bring *up to* 2x performance uplift in many games also depending on your core configuration, but im talking about 4c/4t vs 4c/8t in this case.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  3 года назад

      I've never seen such a big improvement provided by doubling threads. The best result is +50% in some very rare cases, but usually it is about 25%.
      Doubling the amount of cores may indeed double CPU gaming performance, but not threads.

    • @h1tzzYT
      @h1tzzYT 3 года назад

      @@starstreamgamer3704 well from my own testing its pretty close to 2x in some cases, here is the video i made quite a while ago:
      ruclips.net/video/M7mQSN-PFJ0/видео.html
      Notice cyberpunk, total war troy and shadow of the tomb raider had the biggest gains. Also if you look at gamers nexus coverage
      ruclips.net/video/j9HV9V5nzOc/видео.html
      In newer games like division 2, sottr, rdr2, three kingdoms hyper threading gains range in 40-70% area. So anyways as i said it depends how many cores you have and how badly your game is starved for cpu/thread count. But its safe to say that in certain conditions hyper threading can add way more than 25% or even 50% of performance improvement.

    • @h1tzzYT
      @h1tzzYT 3 года назад +1

      this 25% is used to be in 2014-2015 era games and 3d rendering programs, but these days games are significantly more multithreaded and scales much better with total amount of threads, its a great video dont get me wrong, i just wanted to point this out :)

Actually you can raise it's core frequency up to 3 GHz, but anything higher may damage it. If you install a heatsink or a small fan right over the VRM, than you could go a bit higher.
      I would recommend you to focus on memory and NB overclock. Try to raise BCLK frequency, while maintaining the core frequency around 3,0 GHz. It will improve the performance level of your system.

      It depends on what resolution are you going to use. If you are aming at 1080p/60Hz/High, then GTX 1660 Super/Ti is a perfect choice. Some pooply optimized games (like latest Far Cry and Star Wars) will be bottlenecked by X3470, but in general you should be fine. For 1440p/60Hz/High RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700 is the way to go.
      All these recommendations are relevant only if you overclocked your CPU/RAM, otherwise RX 580/GTX 1650 Super is all you need for 1080p.

    I'm planning to get the x3470 for my Acer OEM motherboard but I can't find anything online to find out if it works. Do Xeons work on OEM prebuilt boards?
    I don't have plans for OC because I don't think my mobo has the ability to do that.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  4 года назад

      I'm not sure. It is almost impossible to find any information about CPU compatibility for OEM boards. I'd recommend you to ask Acer themselves. Maybe they will give you the exact model name of this board or even CPU compatibility list.
      But the chances are that X3470 is compatible with this board. Majority of LGA1156 are compatible with Xeons, although many devs simply do not mention Xeons in their CPU support lists.
      As concerns OC, I wouldn't recommend to perfrom it on an OEM board - it is most likely has a poor VRM quality.

      Hi! Thank you!
      Asrock P55 Pro is a decent motherboard, so you can try to achieve 3,8 GHz without any problem, taking into account the fact that you have a decently ventilated case.
      The only problem is your CPU cooler. It's not bad, but it has only 3 heat pipes. So you probably won't be able to overclock your CPU higher than 3,6 GHz without raising it's temperature higher than 73 °C.
      But you can still try to achieve 3,7 GHz and even 3,8 GHz. Who knows, maybe you won the silicon lottery and your CPU sample is good enough to work at 3,8 GHz while keeping low voltage (1,24-1,25 V).
      EZ OC setting is a feature which helps to overclock your CPU automatically. You can try this setting. But in this case you may need to manually decrease the CPU voltage a little bit (to maintain low CPU temperature), if you want to overclock it higher than 3,6 GHz.

I don't recommend to consider X3480 or i7-880 as they both are way too expensive.
      X3470 (or i7-870) is a much better CPU than i3-540. Despite a bit lower base core frequency (2,93 GHz vs 3,07 GHz), it has twice as much cores and twice as much threads, which results in much better performance.
      But if you have an opportunity to overclock a CPU, I'd strongly recommend you to do it. Even if you have a low quality MoBo and a small CPU cooler, you can still overclock RAM and Northbridge. This will make your PC run significantly faster.

This board has a relatively poor VRM quality, so I wouldn't recommend to overuse overclocking. 3,2-3,4 GHz is the maximum safe frequency for this board (depending on the CPU voltage value, which shouldn't be higher than 1,2 V). Intel stock cooler will also limit the ability to overclock your CPU. So, yes, 3,4 GHz is the maximum frequency you can try to achieve.
      But you can overclock your memory without any problems. Even if you OC only memory and BCLK (leaving base CPU frequency on the same level), you will still get a decent performance improvement.

      Unlike 750, X3440 supports HT, which will increase framerate in majority of modern games by ~25%, but what's more important it will also increase 1% low and 0,1% low values, thus drastically improving frametime (by ~50%). If your MoBo handles i5 750 clocked at 4 GHz well enough, then it will be a good choice for X3440 too. Whether you will be able to overclock X3440 to 4 GHz or not mostly depends on the quality of the certain chip. Some of them can operate at this frequency at 1,25 V while others need 1,35 V.
      I do not think it is worth buying X3470 for $50. It is faster than X3440, but not by much.
      Just take a note that due to the presence of HT X3440 is hotter than 750 by ~5-7 °C and consumes about 10% more power.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  4 года назад

      The only difference between X3440 and X3450 is base core clock frequency. X3440 max multiplier is 19 (19x133=2,53 GHz), while X3450 max multiplier is 20 (20x133=2,66GHz). If your MoBo can reach at least 200 MHz BCLK frequency, then there no sence in paying more for X3450, if not, then X3450 will provide slighly better performance.
      If the price is the same, then I would choose X3450, just in case.

      Looks like there is a problem with memory, as web browsers load RAM heavily. Have you overclocked your RAM? If yes, then try to test it for stability with a help of TestMem5.
      If you are using stock RAM, then test it with a help of MemTest86. It will take several hours to complete one pass, but then you will know for sure if the blame is on RAM or not.

      Not sure. That's why I suggested you to test your RAM. Web browser crashes are most likely happening due to RAM problem. But it also might be CPU fault.
      Did you buy this whole PC? Or just upgraded it? For example, if your RAM worked fine with another CPU, that the problem is most probably in X3470. Have you experienced crashes before you upgraded it? The answer to your question depends on the specific situation.

      In fact it is a copy of i7-870. I do not know why Intel added "K" to the name of this CPU. All Lynnfield CPUs have unlocked multiplier. So the only difference between all i7s is the base clock frequency.

    • @pregorygeck6605

      @@starstreamgamer3704 Are you sure about the unlocked multiplier?
      I have an i7 870 and it's locked on 22 (the intel turbo boost technology can go up to 27 on one core). There is the i5 665k and the i7 875k and on their original packaging shows that they are unlocked. The i7 870, for example, don't state anything like that.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  4 года назад

      Well, you can change the i7-870 miltiplier, so it is unlocked. But there is absolutely no sense in increasing it. You can acheive much better results by increasing BCLK. You will probably need to decrease the multiplier by a few steps in this case. The base BCLK value is 133 MHz. If you increase it to 180 MHz (which is a viable for majority of P55 and even some H55 MoBos), then CPU frequency will increase to 3,96 GHz (180x22). I personally was able to increase BCLK frequency to 218 MHz, so I had to decrease the multiplier down to 18.

    • @pregorygeck6605

      @@starstreamgamer3704 Fair enough. I think the i7 875k max multiplier is x62. I'm not sure why it's called unlocked. If I know good, intel called this kind of processors extreme edition before. That is seems more correct.
      The x18 looks good, the QPI link use the same multiplier.
      Anyway, I'll go for a xeon x3480 if I can find one for a fair price. Just because of the 32GB ram support.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  4 года назад

      Yeah. I think that the ablity to increase multiplier is the only reason they aded "K".
      Xeon X3480 max multiplier is 23, while X3460 max multiplier is 21. That is the only difference between these CPUs. Not sure it is worth double the price.

      @starstreamgamer3704  4 года назад

      Hi. Nobody can guarantee that you will be able overclock your CPU sample to 4.2 GHz. It just may not be able to work at this frequency. Replacing it with X3470 will not change much. You may win silicon lottery and your X3470 will be able to work at 4,2 GHz with 1.3 V. But majority of these CPUs need at least 1.4 V to function at 4,1-4,2 GHz.
      I would not recommend you to overclock your CPU to 4,2 GHz. Such high frequency will provide you just about 2-3% better performance in comparison with 4 Ghz, while the increase in CPU temperature will be astounding.
      Still if you want to reach 4,2 GHz, you need to raise CPU voltage higher than 1,2 V. Try 1,3-1,35-1,4 V. Watch your CPU and MoBo temps. VRM temps will increase a lot as well!

      Hello! Thank you for your kind words.
      1. You have one of the best motherboards for 1156 socket. Yes, you can overclock your i7-880 to 4,0 and maybe even to 4,1 GHz. But the frequency will depend a lot on a specific CPU. Some of them can easily overlclock to 4,1 GHz, while some others - can not.
      You have a great CPU cooling system. It will help to keep the temerature of your CPU under control.
      But there is another problem - VRM temperature. If you want to overclock your CPU higher than 3,8 GHz, be prepared that VRM zone will be very very hot. In order to keep it as cool as possible, you'd better install a small 40mm (or 60mm) fan on the heatsink (near CPU).
      To hit 4,0+ GHz you will need to raise the CPU voltage to 1,36-1,4 V. Making this CPU work at these conditions 24/7 is not a good idea (IMHO). But if you really want to do it, don't forget about additional fan for VRM.
      Try to find the highest BCLK frequecny first. For your motherboard it will probaly be some value between 210 and 220 MHz.
      2. According to official web-site, Asus P7P55D-E Pro has PCIe 2.0 x16, which means that 1080 Ti will be an overkill for your PC. 1070 Ti (or RTX 2060) is the fastest graphics card you should use.
      To be honest, even disregarding the fact that P7P55D has old PCIe 2.0, i7-880 (even overclocked to 4,2 GHz) is simply too slow for 1080 Ti. This CPU would not allow this GPU to reach it's full potential.
      Anyway, you can buy 1080 Ti now simply to lay the groundwork for your future PC.
