How We Made Our Chicken Coop Run!

Material List:
Kennel panel with gate and five 1" conduit straps to hook it to the run.
We used all pressure treated lumber:
two 2x6x10's
three 2x6x12's
three 2x4x10's
two 2x4x12's
three 2x4x8's
two 4x4x10's
25 foot roll of 1/2" hardwire cloth 3 feet wide.
50 foot roll 2 inch by 4 inch welded wire 4 feet wide.
3" inch screws for outdoor use/pressure treated wood.
And we used 2x4 joist hangers for the ceiling, but you can just angle screw the boards, which is probably easier.
The run measures 5' by 12'.
We dug two post holes and attached the other two corners to the garage. The posts were back-filled with the dirt that was removed. No concrete was used, which we feel is better. To prevent splitting, we pre-drilled all screw holes. We used rolled metal wire mesh on the three sides and roof (smaller mesh on bottom half). And we used a black dog kennel panel with a gate so we didn't have to make a door.
We decided to build the coop part in the garage for many reasons:
1) We wouldn't need to dig any post holes for it since it would be out of the wind.
2) We wouldn't need to build a leak proof roof.
3) It will be much better to come out in the winter to tend to them and be out of the cold wind.
4) It will be out of the elements, so it won't rot!

I've been following you for a few years, but never got around to these oldest videos. You didn't grow into your innovative genius, you had it all along! Love all those ideas. And my, how young you 2 were 8 years ago! Anyway, now I have new binge watching stuff for the evenings after the yard and garden work. I was running out of things. Work stops earlier in the day at my age and some of the stuff I've had going on. It was your new channel "Living DIYfferent" that made me look again at older videos. Doesn't make sense to most anyone else probably, but it does to me. I think it's the getting to know you better thing.😄
This is exactly what I was looking for, the thing I am changing is putting the hardware clothes before putting the 2x6 vertically.

I like a man that can get things done. I lost my Helper but I now use klamps a lot and they are good. You got a very solid structure to work with and now can settle back and let the "spoiled workers do their jobs". They give You all some time off and You both deserve it! Well done!

Did you consider burying some of the chicken wire to avoid the risk of digging predators?
Yea, We did consider it, but decided we don't need to. We lock the chickens in at night and we haven't had any problems during the day. Thanks!

We built our duck/ chicken house and run the same way except our opening is a lot lower to the ground where we cut the opening in our barn and our run is way bigger but we have a lot birds. We can also close a door on them if we needed to.
It works fantastic. I'm sure yours does too.
We also poured concrete to about 6 inches below the ground putting the chicken wire into the concrete so nothing could dig under and get into the run.

The horizontal boards on the bottom are 2x6's. The long side on top is a 2x6. The horizontal ones in the middle are 2x4's. The ceiling joists are 2x4's. The 2 corner posts are 4x4's. The run measures about 5'x12'. :)

Great carpentry job but you need smaller wire or a second layer of coop wire and it really needs to be bigger so they can reach fresh grass and dirt because there is nothing but rocks there. Chickens need fresh tilled dirt to sunbathe in. Too bad it isn't big enough to reach some of that fresh green grass you have there.

I have a series I'm doing now on a colossal coop to house 30 chickens, (skycoop) It's a 8x8' coop building 7 feet off the ground, with a 8'x50' fully enclosed chain-link run. If you spray the bottom of those 4x4 with flex seal they won't rot in the ground from moisture.

MiniSteading I'm in the process of building the same setup on my large shed. I'd like to see what the interior looks like on how you placed your coops. It's awesome getting different ideas.
I think you should have put the door on the other side away from that drain pipe.

Your plans have a couple of things wrong. You listed that you used 2x6x10 but that the run is 12’ long. Also looks like you used 5 conduit clamps instead of 4. 4 seems to hold fine but the length of run is only 10 feet
For some reason I had the lumber listed wrong in the description all this time without knowing. Thanks for pointing that out. I think it is listed correctly now. The run really is 12' long.

Hi, I did not notice a window for the hens inside the coop. I am seriously considering this type enclosure for my chickens and cringe at the idea of first cutting an opening for hen passage, let alone another one for a window. How did you get around the need for the hens to have view of daylight? Thank You.
The pop door lets in enough light for them to see their food, water, and nesting box. We have been leaving the pop door open 24-7 so they have sun as soon as day breaks and they go outside when they wish. On a side note they do make the garage dusty.

Did you cement the posts or are they secure enough being attached to the crossing boards on the ground?
The posts are set in the ground 3 feet and backfilled with the dirt that we took out. No cement was used.

Maybe. It's not too hard, you just need feed, water, and a safe place for them to live.
great job but chicken wire is to big which would allow vermin to get in -snakes,mongoose, etc
For our cold climate, this works well for us since we don't need to worry about big snakes like that are in the south, and nothing else really comes around during the day when the chickens are in the run.
as a not so very handyman can someone please tell me what the measurements are in cms
First I thought great idea to put chicken in the garage but then I realized that the cars will smell like chicken poop or whatever you store there.
There's no chicken poop smell since we clean the coop regularly. What we do have though is dust...chickens make a lot of dust and it gets on everything.

What size wood (pressure treated I am sure), the door? and is that a nail gun? you used the heavy lumber in the corner and what type of wood for the ground and the rest? Thanks! I love your run.
