@iammrbeat To be completely honest, I didn't know much about Walz until he was appointed as Kamala's running mate. I believe that Walz could be a good pick to help swing some past republican states to the Democratic side
Being someone born, raised and educated in California (including law school - does that make me a “west coast elite?”), I don’t know enough about Gov. Thank you - I always enjoy your videos, including of course your Supreme Court Briefs.
In Minnesota, DFL is pretty much a stand-in for the Democrats these days. It's not really considered a third-party here. I think his win as a representative was more surprising because that district has traditionally been pretty conservative. -lifelong resident of southern Minnesota
@@TallgrassMeander yeah at 11:14 when Beat said Walz was a third-party who defeated Republicans, I double taked. Every Democratic politician in Minnesota is in the Democratic Farmer Labor party. It IS the Dem party, called DFL for good historical reasons. I think his congressional win was an upset just because the district leaned Republican before and since. It was not a Jesse Ventura situation. It isn't even a Bernie Sanders situation (where Bernie is an independent affiliated with Dems who sometimes joins the party). Walz is still DFL.
DFL (Democrat-Farmer-Labor) is just the local name for Democrats, and has been since the merger in the early 1960s. Especially, since farmers probably mostly vote Republicans - by now they are basically rural business owners. I don't think organized labor in Minnesota is particularly significant. I think Minnesota is typical of other Democratic party strong holds. Mostly well educated urban professionals, with the extra spice of the large Somali diaspora.
I’m from Minnesota, I specifically lived in house district 1 which is the red district Walz won before becoming governor. My dad who was a life long Republican (served the army under Reagan) voted for Tim Walz (first time ever voting Democrat) because he was a teacher, and veteran. Watching Republicans claim Walz lied about his service shows the kinds of people they are, and Walz’s response which is to THANK Vance for his military service, shows the honest character that my dad first saw which turned my dad away from the Republican Party for good.
I think the DUI thing won't stick. Especially since George W Bush had the whole documented history of coke use and drunk driving. GWB was privileged and it was back before it was considered as serious so he didn't get the charge I believe (I could be wrong). But Walz got it back on the 90s, that's 30 years ago or so, and he doesn't seem to be a repeat offender. He might even have something to say about it that will resonate with general people
True, maybe the DUI thing won't stick. Maybe tampons in fourth grade boys bathrooms and allowing a minor to make a decision to have himself castrated without parental consent will.
Maybe im too cynlical or naive, but with all the issues younger generations have to deal with today why should younger generations be impressed with a goofy down to earth VP? Seems like good publicity, but doesnt really do anything for the 20 year old looking at the cost of rent and housing in this country asking how the heck am I gonna be able to afford to live here..... It still very troubling to me that the Harris administration largely doesnt have an economic policy nor really has anything for housing. She seems to be running witht he Nevada pep rally bill they threw together. I get most people dont read even approved legislation much less proposed legislation, but that proposal really doesnt do anything to address the housing situation in this country. I guess just hope none of the voters take time to read policy and play 50 more orange man bad commercial and secure your presidency........ Tho imo if she walks into the white house and fails as president it will setup the republicans for decades and potentially lead to even more damage in the future. We really need leaders in charge that have a specific and calculated plan to address real issues in this country and its concerning that really neither candidate has this.
@@MattBuild4 I don’t think young people like myself like Tim Walz because he is down to earth. It is simply that he is a governor who has a good track record in implementing progressive policies which would benefit us in the long run. Him seeming down to earth simply adds to his appeal since it would galvanise support within the rust belt.
Minnesotan here. Walz is decently good. He got a lot of flak during the Covid lockdowns and Minneapolis riots but the overall sentiment is that he’s alright. I think a lot of Minnesotans take him (and Minnesota) for granted, but we are very proud of our state’s impressive stats despite being an irrelevant state with terrible weather. Fun fact: Minnesota has the nation's lowest tax rate for low-income people (6.2%), according to the Institute for Taxation policy, though Vermont is close (6.3%). So, I've been hoping he would be Harris's pick for weeks. I think he is an awesome choice. They will make a good ticket. Go teachers!!
Shapiro's Pennsylvania popularity was a mirage. He's a freshly elected governor still in his honeymoon period with very little political experience. His democrat predecessor, Tom Wolf, was so unpopular he didn't want to run again. So the Republicans tried to get away with one of the worst candidates period in Doug Mastriano in the 2022 race. Shapiro easily won because he could at least appear like a normal person, Dems approve of him currently because he isn't Mastriano, Republicans like him because he governs more like a Republican. But once the magnifying glass went on him with this higher profile his popularity in the state was going to erode. Walz on the other hand has won multiple times even in a Republican district in the House and Senate
Pennsylvania has term limits for governor so Tom Wolf couldn't run again. (I spent most of my life in Pennsylvania including during Tom Wolf's time in office and was a registered voter in PA.)

Tim Walz is such a good guy, he's a sweet dad and family man, he cares about people, he gave kids the ability to eat in school. Walz was the rep for my district when i was in highschool and then the governor when i was in college. He’s signed a lot of great things that the legislature put through to him. My history professor in high school student taught under him in Mankato. When Walz ran for Congress he stopped into my dads businesses. I met Tim when he was running for governor. After asking my name he asked about my dad and told me the story of meeting my dad, almost 2 decades earlier. I went home and asked my dad and he told me how impressed he was with Tim when he met him. As a congressman he spoke at my small town highschool.
Minnesota safe Dem if Walz leaves to be veep. Shapiro makes PA safe Dem in reelection for 2nd term if he left it could flip with 60% chance . Beshear has 2 years as governor left. NC Cooper leaves state LtGov becomes active governor.

With Walz on the ticket, Kamala has a really great chance of winning. Everything he's done for Minnesota is extremely popular when it comes to what citizens want from their government.

Tim Walz used to having a 100% rating from the NRA, but in 2018, after the barrage of school shootings all across the country, Tim Walz decided to tackle the gun violence crisis. Hell, even his daughter begged him to fight gun violence, so he did. In fact, he took all the money he ever got from the gun lobbies and donated everything to charities that help support victims of gun violence. Just because of that, the NRA betrayed him and gave him 0% rating. Tim Walz proves that even proud gun owners and hunters can advocate for common sense gun laws.

So I was in for about thirty minutes but here is my two cents. Unfortunately, progressives are often written as radical, scary, idealistic, and dangerous. I am mostly concerned about having two progressives with no semblance of a counterbalance Barrack Obama had Joe Biden to center him out, Joe Biden had Kamala Harris to broaden his portfolio, and I feel this may make centrists upset. But the republican party is guilty of this too, with two very outspoken people and the ticket, also people don’t seem to care that much about VPs but it’s a nice advantage to have. I will also say it is more often to find a person who leans to the far right than left, because we love tradition and the ways of old. I really wanted Josh Shapiro as he is a moderate and is very popular among the people for Pennsylvania, albeit the Republican Party was doing itself no favors picking the candidate in the 2022 election. Democrats NEED Pennsylvania to win, to compensate for its loss in EVs they would need to pickup Arizona and Nevada or Georgia. Both of which are less likely than Pennsylvania. On the flip side a nice small town midwestern feel could be an advantage and a gamble. While he leans pretty left he has a lot of popularity online and among young voters which will already add to their already energized state l. Personally I think they took a small risk and gamble much like they did with Joe Biden stepping down, will this pay off?? We will see in the polls and on election night

Buttigieg would have been the best choice, being an ivy league veteran from the midwest like Vance, he has worked with Harris for the last three years, and he has already run a successful presidential campaign. Walz I would say was the second best option as a veteran from the midwest along with having the support from the progessive wing of the party. As a Pennsylvanian i was also hesitant to say Shapiro would be a good pick as he has only been in state level positions and is from the Eastern (much more Democratic side) of the state and realistically would not have helped Harris on the Western side where Pittsburgh and it's suburbs will be one of the big deciding factors of the state ....Walz is a much better pick, i would actually agree with your assessment on the other picks from a left-leaning pov (more Libertarian/independent voter here.) but just thought that tidbit adds to your assessments.

I think Tim Walz will do better than Shapiro in Georgia even though he's more progressive. Shapiro gives off that fast talking big city Yankee vibe which a lot of folks in the deep South chafe against. I'm in SE Georgia, a region of the state where democrats are in a very good position to pick up lots of business republicans. Under Governor Bryan Kemp's leadership, the region is undergoing a lot of growth driven by lots of new factories drawn in by the Governor Kemp. MAGA people have taken over the local republican parties in the region and won the primaries and are pushing through an anti-growth agenda which threaten the viability of the new factories. At the local level a lot of business leaders who usually support republicans are turning to democrats who have also taken a pro-growth / pro-business stand at the local level to save them in the general election. (It's funny how roles are reversed suddenly.) While these business leaders may find Walz a bit liberal on economic policies for their liking, I still think that culturally Walz will appeal to Georgia people more. But nothing will help Harris as much in Georgia as the new fight that Donald Trump has picked with Governor Bryan Kemp who has a 61 percent approval rating in the state in spite of him becoming unpopular among the MAGA extremists who have taken over the Republican Party leadership in my county. Trump's attack only served to bring everyone's attention to the fact that Georgia's first Lady, Marty Kemp made a public statement saying that she will never endorse Trump.

Oh Ja, it’s the district that produced Al Quie and Allen Erdahl (both were moderates though)
The DFL is basically just the democrats, but better.
@michaellee4276 true but the district was also held by Tim Penny in the 90s. A democrat
Walz is no Tim Penny that's for sure....... And that's not a good thing

His governance has been the OPPOSITE of reckless or wasteful, he has consistently ran his state with a surplus, meaning his state MAKES more money than it spends at the end of the year. He also lowered the tax burden on the lower and middle classes, who cares if taxes get a little higher for companies or rich people. They were already paying disgustingly low rates anyways, they should get used to paying more to society considering all their wealth comes from society
Could someone please explain to me as a non-American. Why so many republicans are opposed to free school meals?
There is a spectrum disorder called ASD; if you look into it I think you might find your answers there.
They are not, they just opposed to socialism being normalized as “neighborliness”.
Since there's literally no such thing as a free lunch, someone has to pay for it. it's also like the 20th thing on the list for why we dislike him. Kinda like if we said 'Dems only hate trump because he's buddies with Elon' there's like way way more important things to bring up
@@shank8966 Because school lunches don’t work and lead to waste. It’s better to make food cheaper than have school lunches. Plus most of the time paid lunches are like less than 5 dollars for a meal ticket.
@@brettgold4502 Out of pure curiosity then, what do you consider to be classed as socialism?
Tim Walz is a very safe candidate. Josh Shapiro would've been a gamble as while he would work with moderate, pro-Israel voters and could've given Democrats a better shot at Pennsylvania, the far-left pro-Palestine Democrats might not have voted in protest, particularly in states like Michigan.
But Tim Walz won his 2022 re-election by only the same margin Biden won Minnesota in 2020.
Agreed. Wherever you stand on Israel-Palestine, unfortunately Josh Shapiro’s identity would make it an unavoidable sticking point in the race. The reality is that both parties will likely continue to back Israel but speaking optics-wise.
Is anti-genocide now a far left stance? I don't disagree that some misguided people might have abstained from voting if Shapiro were on the ticket, but let's not pretend that opposing genocide is an extreme position.
@@extravagantpanda7962opposing hamas is opposing genocide, since their main political agenda is to essentially finish what hitler started. Why are people not grasping this concept? See Ezra Klien's interview of Gov. Walz to get a sense of the man. I think he will be an asset to the Harris/Walz ticket in the campaign.
I second the how to run for office video idea. It genuinely seems unobtainable for the average person and younger people are engaging in politics less and less. I think it’s a major reason for the political/patriotism apathy.
It seems like the disaffected voters have 1 of 2 ideologies.
The gov doesn’t care about you, why vote?
The gov doesn’t care about you, overthrow it.
Why do I never see people encouraging others to run for office and be the change that they want to see?
Throw in anyone who is passionate about politics eventually gets worn down. I saw that shit a lot doing campaign work (we had such difficulty with keeping any of our younger staff/volunteers with how much abuse the higher up would inflict on them)
I'm not from the US, but I think Walz is a great pick. I think he will definitely give Kamala a boost in support, and hopefully beat Trump for this election. Project 2025 is a looming threat for many people who live in the US, and I hope Kamala/Walz wins it.

Hey just wanted to let you know you have become one of my absolute favorite youtubers! I LOVE your political analysis. Thank you for the content man it is so relaxing to watch and I always learn something new. Can you do a video on why blue collar career paths are ticking up in popularity and viability? I am a blue collar worker at one of the largest lumber mills in northern rural Michigan and I love my job. I love reading analysis on the blue collar economy in America and why it is a good career path for some. I would love to hear your thoughts thanks Mr. Beat!
@@glensheppard1056 Kamala is not a progressive. She backed off of Medicare for all. Shapiro can still stump for Kamala in PA.
Shapiro said PRO-PALESTINE/anti-genocide (not pro-hamas) protesters were akin to the KKK. Michigan was a real liability to Shapiro.
This was the right choice.
Also, Shapiro has a 49% approval rating. Do you think that is "very popular?"
Love your videos. Tim Walz is a well rounded guy. Former teacher, Football coach, former military and National guard. Also doesn’t have a lot of baggage like Shapiro.

Hey, Mr. Beat! Thanks for your good work. Old Boomer Gamer here. Risk strategies reflect actual strategic considerations. Too many fronts = Bad! So, Concentrating in the Austrailian continent, only one border to defend, and being patient is often a winner, drawback is difficulty in breaking out. South America has only two fronts to defend, next best, and often less contested. Defending Asia is the nightmare it has always been, historically. Europe is tough too. North America and Africa are lesser options, and require some dumb luck to hold. Good Luck, and have fun!
He actually isn’t pro gun. He has passed more gun laws in MN this last term. Than there have been in the past ten years
One can be both pro gun and anti “idiot with a gun”, I sure am and Walz is too.
So being pro gun means you can’t pass any gun laws
this may be true on paper and i dont exactly disagree but yea i think its more about not giving guns to those who aren't maybe ready or should have a firearm. Would you give a criminal a firearm just because its their right? Maybe? Its a slippery slope but as a hunter I know how to use a firearm safely and I am ok with the policy put in place. Just my opinion and personal experience
He is very much pro-gun. He's just not pro-any-gun-for-anybody.
Well he owns more guns than most Americans.
They didn't pick Andy Basheer because he is going to be the Democrat that takes McConnel's seat.

I was shocked by the pick also . After hearing Tim's story and listening to him talk , I like the guy .
Kelly would have been good too but we can't risk losing his seat in the Senate.
Beshear would have been fine but he loses some points for me because he is part of a political dynasty, essentially being a nepo baby.
Shapiro was just elected govenor of Pennsylvania, he's only been on the job for a year and a half. Plus his support for Israel would alienate the progressive wing.
Kelly was in the same situation as Roy Cooper since the Lt Governor of NC is so far right it’s not funny
As a Pennsylvanian i was also hesitant to say Shapiro would be a good pick as he has only been in state level positions and is from the Eastern (much more Democratic side) of the state and realistically would not have helped Harris on the Western side where Pittsburgh and it's suburbs will be one of the big deciding factors of the state
....Walz is a much better pick, i would actually agree with your assessment on the other picks from a left-leaning pov (more Libertarian/independent voter here.) but just thought that tidbit adds to your assessments.
Alot of midwesterners dont like buttgieg as he comes off as elitist, and more recently people dont like some of the recent failings of the dot.
The democrats don’t need to be pandering to antisemites. If they want to be the party of reason as they claim then they shouldn’t be worried about these peoples votes.
@MattBuild4
The only thing I'll say to that is he did pretty well in Iowa
I got to see him speak yesterday in Philadelphia along with Kamala. Shapiro definitely got people fired up but Walz was quite excellent as well. A couple good jokes, genuine and empathetic, I’m a fan.
Why do the MAGA people support an anti-growth agenda?
I am so stoked! Great pick!
