Today on our 2006 Ford F-150 4WD, we'll be installing the Westin Grille Guard part number 40-2015. Note the install for this application will be similar to a 2WD but we'll be following the 4WD install procedures. To begin we'll need to remove the manufacturer's tow hook. There's two. One on each side and each one is held in with two fasteners. We'll remove the fasteners and the tow hooks. Now after we remove the tow hook and fasteners, we'll go ahead and pull the old nut plate out of the frame that held the fasteners tight.
Now with our passenger side done, we'll repeat the same process on the driver side. Now with the old tow hook and hardware out of the way, we're going to take the new 12 millimeter nut plate, slide it into the frame and replace the older manufacturer's hardware. As we slide it into position, we'll make sure it lines up with the pre-drilled holes in the frame. We'll have one for each side. Now with the nut plate in the frame, we'll use the 12 millimeter by 30 millimeter long bolt split lock washer and large flat washer to secure the lower bracket to the nut plate we put in the frame. Before we install the new bracket, we're going to go ahead and take the rear bolt and thread it into place leaving enough room to slide the bracket in position. We're now ready to go ahead and put our bracket in position, which is marked D for driver's side.
The notched portion of our bracket we'll slide between the frame and the flat washer, we'll line up our front attachment point and then install our bolt. We'll thread our fasteners in finger tight at this time. Now with the driver side bracket installed, I'll move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now with the lower bracket hardware installed finger tight, we're going to move to the two piece upper brackets and hardware. Our upper bracket is going to be a two piece bracket. This piece, identified with a D for driver side, is going to bolt to the back side of the frame flange lining up with the pre-drilled hole.
We'll use our 10 millimeter bolt and large flat washer that fits our 10 millimeter bolt, we'll go through the frame flange, then through the bracket. Then on the inside we're going to install a 10 millimeter flat washer, split lock washer, and then a nut. Again we'll just secure this finger tight at this time. Next we'll install the upper portion of our two piece bracket and as you'll notice the lower bracket has a weld nut built into it so we'll be threading the 10 millimeter bolt, split lock washer and flat washer. That'll go down through the upper portion of our bracket and into the weld nut. As you can see, it's slotted for adjustment and we're just going finger tight so we can make the necessary adjustments once we put our grille guard in place.
Now with the driver side bracket installed, I'll move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now with all our brackets in place, we're ready to put the grille guard in position. We'll be securing the lower four fasteners of our grille guard with our stainless steel 12 millimeter bolt and flat washer, going from the outside in. Once we go through the guard and the bracket, we'll install a second large flat washer, split lock washer, and then the nut. For our upper bracket we're going to use the 10 millimeter bolt and flat washer, going through our guard and bracket, we'll install a second flat washer, split lock washer, and nut. Then once we have all our hardware in place, we can start tightening it down. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands, or two, to help hold your guard in position and install the hardware. Now with our grille guard centered, we'll go ahead and start tightening down our fasteners. We'll start with the lower bracket to frame fasteners first and then our other 12 millimeter hardware, attaching the lower bracket to grille guard, and then our upper hardware. After we tighten down our fasteners, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners tightened down and torqued to specifications, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the Westin Sportsman Grille Guard part number 40-2015 on our 2006 Ford F-150. .
