OMG YES!! I’m so so happy that you’ve enjoyed A Little Life!!!! It’s so true that this is either a hit or miss and for me, it’s my all time favourite book! I was so excited to hear your thoughts on this! Lets cry together ...
A Little life is an amazing Book. The audiobook is pretty long but totally worth it. Everyone one talks about Jude but what about Willem?!? Such an amazing friend, always there for Jude.... he made me cry all the tears. 5 stars without a doubt! Thanks for your videos, love your comments and as a plastic surgeon I can tell you had an amazing surgery, you look awesome!
BTW, thanks so much for not exploding your videos with 30 ads as is customary now... I truly appreciate it. And thank you for making faces, funny voices, and generally being yourself!
The US is still very anti-introvert imo. Especially in schools where they're putting more and more emphasis on group work and hands on learning that forces you to rely on your peers.
@@derek3418 at least they let you do everything. When I try to do everything, they get hurt. When I give them something to do, they either don't finish or they don't do it right.
Yeah, I hated that, too. At least the most of my teachers graded each member of the group individually and could tell who done the most work. But man, I hated those group projects.
I'm the same kind of introvert. I'm pretty outgoing, but I definitely need a lot of me-time and get overwhelmed by being around people too much. I'm very interested in The Turn of the Key and cannot wait to start the Nevernight trilogy! I DNF'd The Girl with All the Gifts at about 150 pages. There were a lot of gross descriptions that turned my stomach, it was slow paced, there was a lack of world building, and I couldn't stand how often I heard the name, "Ms. Justineau." lol

A Little Life is one of my favourite books of all time! My heart broke over and over, mended a little and broke again. I will rave about it (but also tell no one what it is about because everyone needs to go into it blind) till I die!

I discovered Nevernight chronicles books through your channel and decided to try them by spending my three accumulated audible credits on them, and I really love the series! So glad I gave them a chance. A new favorite, definitely exceeded my expectations.
Totally agree on Tattooist of Auschwitz. Made more sense when I found out it was written by a screenwriter, and I felt less bad for hating it! You can’t just write a screenplay and expect it to be appreciated as a novel... films have cinematography and emotional acting that needed to be compensated for in novel form, and she did not take that into account when writing this. I hated the boring play by play of “he did this then she said that oh and then this happened...” *end rant 😅
Emily, if you want to read more about WWII, "the women in the tower" (I hope I'm not messing up the name, but it's something like it) is really great. It takes an unusual perspective of German women. As someone who's read quite a few books about the war, the Holocaust, and its results I have to say it was very interesting and unique. Not so much as to cry, not necessarily, but great non the less. "we were the lucky ones" is the one for tears. Tons of them. It's important to read such things, to remember the people and what they went through.
I did the Exact same thing with the last 100 pages of A Little Life! I also made sure I finished it in the safety of my house so I wouldn’t ugly cry in a coffee shop or some other public place
I hated ending of The Turn of the Key! I was really into the book but the ending was so flat. I kept wondering if my copy was missing a few pages, but sadly no.
I wanted to read A Little Life but I can't right now so I'll leave it for the summer (my summer lol). I want to read it more now that you said you liked it 😂 Also that Quiet book it has been on my radar for YEARS. Maybe it's time I finally read it.
Final Girls was eh. 3 stars probably but you ranted about how great Riley Sagers other books are so I might pick them up :) I was unimpressed with final girls! Also I loved the last house guest!! While I was guessing at the ending, I was still unsure so... ya know? It was solid 3.5 stars
I really want to read A little life but I've been putting it off because I have a feeling it will emotinally ruin me :D also, I have read all of the three Riley Sager books in a row and really enjoyed all of them. I love how he takes popular horror themes and makes a whole new story around them, my favourite was Final girls!
Not gonna lie, it probably will... but it's all worth it lol I didn't want to get attached to a character again, hence all the mystery/thrillers after reading that book!
I just finished Vow of Thieves and can't decide between Nevernight, Middlegame or A Little Life.. they're all stacked on top of each other. So many good books, so little time.
I haven't read Middlegame yet... but it depends how much emotional trauma you're ready for lol Action driven - Nervernight Character driven and tears - A Little Life
I also felt slighty disappointed with Magic for Liars. But small corrections it is not her sister who was murdered. She actually reconnects with her sister during the investigation.
I read this one book by the author of A Little Life called The People in the Trees and it was SO GOOD! Reading that makes me want to read A Little Life but i don’t want to put myself through the pain that i know it’ll give me I read The Girl With all the Gifts (also in July i think) and oof i was NOT a fan. i still kinda wanna read the second book in that series though, i’m curious as to how the story could continue after the ending of that book
I really enjoyed Darkdawn but do get what you mean about the ending being a bit controversial. I felt like Jay could revisit this world again... I would be intrigued to hear more about how Jonnen and the Red Church develops now magic is back.
With regards to A Little Life, I feel like it's important to include HEAVY trigger warnings for sexual abuse, self harm, eating disorders, suicide etc. I could imagine it would be very triggering to people struggling with those (I don't and even though I'm not particularly squeamish I cringed hard through a lot of it). I also would urge caution for anyone struggling with mental health problems in general. The whole theme of the book, especially near the end, is very anti-recovery (don't get me started on things the author has said in interviews) and on the whole it sends a pretty negative message which could be harmful to a lot of people. So it's definitely something to approach with care. I personally couldn't stand it because of those things, but each to their own.
I couldn’t finish this book. It was so depressing, ugly and I was at the edge of throwing up when I read certain parts. So yeah, a disclaimer would really be nice.
I really should read Quiet: I'm an introvert, but not really shy: I just really love my me-time, as you said it :) some people don't understand, and are bothered by this ^^'
Aww, sad that you didn't enjoy The girl with all the Gifts😢 It's one of my all time faves, I just looooove Melanie. I feel like I never like kids in books, but she is definitely an exception for me.
And here I'd hoped you would dislike A Little Life just as much as I did... ;) The Girl with all the Gifts is on my TBR for this year, now I'm really curious if our opinions on that book will totally differ as well. But even if it turns out that our reading tastes are total opposites I'll still watch your videos till the end of time because you're so entertaining XD
@@berenicethegirl At the very beginning I actually really liked it, the writing was good and the characters interesting. But I grew more and more frustrated with how the story developed because people's actions and reactions became sooooo unrealistic! I dnf'd it after reading about 30% (reviewers with similar issues said it doesn't get better). If you don't mind spoilers, check out this in-depth review, it basically says it all: ruclips.net/video/KkjY_UNHQBA/видео.html (hope it's not bad manners to link to another booktuber)
So refreshing to see a review of The Tattooist of Auschwitz that sounds like the same book I read. The praise for that book confuses me - I get that we are careful, as we should be, about commenting on the subject matter, but the way it was written was frankly a disservice to those millions of people.
I read "12 Rules for Life" by Dr. Jordan Peterson and really enjoyed it 4.5/5. I finally read "Dreams of Gods and Monsters" by Laini Taylor and I had heard mixed reviews about it but generally it leaned toward not being great. It started out great then halfway through it got kind of dumb so I was disappointed. Still, the good parts made it worthwhile (mostly.) And I finished reading the Bible, which was a pretty incredible experience and I'm glad I did it. I finished my reread of "The Virgin Suicides" which was great again and still one of my favorite books, 5/5. And I read Genesis 1 by Poppy and Titanic Sinclair and it was pretty good but not great. I liked how self aware it was.
Argh! I quit A Little Life about 50 pages from the end because of that ridiculous accident! The only reason I didn't throw it at a wall was because it was a library book. Sure it did have some beautifully written passages and some fantastic prose but overall - a big no from me.
omg I have the same sentiments about The Tattooist! I was excited to read it at first but then DNFd it halfway through. I just couldn't connect with the main character.
I felt similarly about Tattooist of Auschwitz, the writing just wasn't there. Also, between the author bio and the copyright page, it looks like this is a true story that was fictionalized, and I'm like, if it's based on interviews and a true story, then just write the true story!
I think I was a little bit disappointed with Darkdawn - still really enjoyed it! But it is my least favourite book in the trilogy. There was a lot of sub plot stuff going and I wanted the the main events (Mia’s revenge and Truedark) to happen sooner and last longer. I did love how meta it was and learning about the mythology tho
I just finished The dry and it's also really slow. Very characterdriven and I don't like that in a thriller. I would read it, the ending is really good, but don't expect a masterpiece.
I also could not read little life for a while after the STORY with WILLEM. I also read the last 50 pages in the morning with the full face on and i had to stop every 5 pages and talk to myself to stop crying. I finished it, came back home from work, reread the ending and cried. Only after that I could say yes I finished it haha. The ending is logical but supper heartbreaking(
BookswithEmilyFox imagine me I was reading goldfinch and a little life at the same time. My heart is not in pieces it’s basically dust already. I can say August was full of crying hahaha
I didn't really liked The turn of the Key. Not that the book was bad or anything I just discovered that I hate reading about nannies. I know it sounds silly, but I felt HUGE second-hand panic because of her job. Apparently little kids are my worst nightmare 😅🤣
I'm so happy you liked A Little Life!!! There's so much hate around it and people can be so cynical, it's exhausting to look at some of the reviews. I kind of hate the reputation it has (that cover doesn't help, I bought a different version) because I think what makes it WORK (makes it not just a miserable slog) is that apart from all the horrifying stuff in it, it also has so many of the most beautiful passages too! GOOD things happen to Jude too! Years later I'm still about to cry happy tears about the adoption bit. And that beautiful central friendship that spans so many decades. While it could be described as a book about the effects of childhood trauma it's also so much about overwhelming love and friendship (even when people don't think they deserve it) and how it evolves over the years. I totally did the same thing as you with the last 20% or so, I was so upset both by plot events and just the book almost being over that it was too much. That book meant so much to me. Nearly done re-reading The Poppy War to freshen up on names and places, can't wait to start Dragon Republic. Glad to hear it doesn't disappoint. Will take that Tattooist book off my TBR too, lol. Cheers!
I read the Tattooist of Auschwitz and felt really bad for hating it. It feels weird to judge a supposedly real story... But then i read that it was a script and also a heavily fictionalised story. So: it felt really fragmented and stumbling all over itself. I expected to be sad, I expected to be scared of things humans can do to other humans... I didn't expect to feel nothing, or, for that matter, to feel kinda dirty. And the author is writing a sequel/spin-off about one of the characters, and i feel like it can be worse, because its about that girl, who was allowed to keep her hair (who read it, knows, what is up)
Tattooist was written so poorly! Apparently it was supposed to be a movie not a book. But I still was sad reading it since it was about that man's life at the death camp and it had interviews in the back. It would have been so much better if the author had stuck to the true story instead of making it historical fiction and making parts unrealistic. The Last House Guest is on my shelf to read during Fall/Winter. I actually have to 'catch up' with Ruth Ware's books. I have the Lying Game on my shelf by her as well.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story. Lale Sokolov told his and Gitas story after she died. Not trying to be rude but I don't know where you have your information from..
@@BookswithEmilyFox okay that sounds logical but you said "almost fantasy". But the story of them two is true. But like you said.. they've had "to much freedom" like they were walking around the whole concentrating camp (?) and this was impossible.
I personally really loved The Turn of the Key and didn't feel like the ending was lukewarm at all. I thought the atmosphere was great and the ending was satisfying. Sure, it wasn't the most surprising ending or anything but, for me, it was pretty neat but not forcefully so, so it didn't bother me enough to make me feel different about the rest of the book (that was a strong 4 stars for me). I disliked both of the books by the authors of An Anonymous Girl. Both of them were 2 stars for me, but it may be because I don't like the domestic thriller thing. I thought both of the books were forgetful, boring and VERY dissatisfying. I also had problems with some of the gender dynamics presented. btw, I also read all of Riley Sager books recently and I loved them! My ranking is 1. Lock Every Door 2. The Last Time I Lied 3. Final Girls but I found all of them pretty entertaining, specially the first one. It was a pretty good ride and I loved the scenes at the end, but I know a lot of people didn't enjoy the reveal.
I didn't say this in my wrap up, bc I thought it was mean: Imagine that Jude is a girl in a YA novel, would she be the annoying heroine? I'd like to know what you'd say 🕵
I felt the exact same way about Tattooist of Auschwitz and everyone kept telling me how good it was, how sad it was and then it disappointed me. I felt the writing was really bland that it sucked all the emotion out of the story.
I didn't like All the missing girls. The concept was good but I could not stand Nick. I think that was her name. But I'll agree with you that the author is very good in giving you creepy town vibes.
Magic for Liars was also a massive disappointment for me. The premise sounded so great! The execution..not so much. I really disliked the main character and was so bored with the mystery.

Muted during the spoiler, because I just started the second book, and I want things to remain a mystery.
Talking about this forgettable book, not showing the cover in the video or naming it in the description is a mood 😂😂😂
lol I just realized it... guess it was meant to be :P
I didn't really liked The turn of the Key. Not that the book was bad or anything I just discovered that I hate reading about nannies. I know it sounds silly, but I felt HUGE second-hand panic because of her job. Apparently little kids are my worst nightmare 😅🤣
You read Quiet as an AudioBook ? Hope you wore Headphones
Totally agree with you about An Anonymous Girl!! The premise was so interesting but it just became way too domestic for me
I'm so happy you liked A Little Life!!!
And the author is writing a sequel/spin-off about one of the characters, and i feel like it can be worse, because its about that girl, who was allowed to keep her hair (who read it, knows, what is up)
Pliz return to fantasy. I love your fantasy reccomendations.
I’m like a 7th into a little life and I just don’t have enough time
Finally someone else who didn't like The Tattooist of Auschwitz! I cry so easily, but I couldn't emotionally connect with it at all.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story. Lale Sokolov told his and Gitas story after she died. Not trying to be rude but I don't know where you have your information from..
It's "inspired" by their story. The author admitted to changing a lot and official statements by Auschwitz organizations basically bashed it.
@@BookswithEmilyFox okay that sounds logical but you said "almost fantasy".
But the story of them two is true. But like you said.. they've had "to much freedom" like they were walking around the whole concentrating camp (?) and this was impossible.
I read 20 books in a month when I was very young lol
Look at your cute dimple!!!!! 😍
What is your favorite horror/mystery book author(s)?
What surgery?
I had orthognatic surgery - it's all on my beauty channel!
I didn't say this in my wrap up, bc I thought it was mean: Imagine that Jude is a girl in a YA novel, would she be the annoying heroine?
I'd like to know what you'd say 🕵
Don't watch the movie of "the girl with all the gifts" it's even wore than the book..
lynxlou okay but HOW is it worse than the book the book was BAD 😂😂
@@peachykeenchy8194 It just was 😂😂
I felt the exact same way about Tattooist of Auschwitz and everyone kept telling me how good it was, how sad it was and then it disappointed me.
Magic for Liars was so boring and predictable. I need to read The Poppy War.
this may be a weird comment but for some reason you sound very american to me in this video
love you emily, hope you're well, but DON'T LISTEN TO HER, A LITTLE LIFE SUCKS, READ MY 2691 WORD ESSAY ON IT lmao
I didn't like at all The Girl With All The Gifts...it was really "meh" for me, too!
