Dapol is so named because the original company, taking on many of the Airfix moulds, was created by David and Pauline Boyle; therefore, for me, the ' Da' part of it is pronounced 'Day'. 😊
Superb work. The loco looks fantastic. One tip I would give you is to use Micro Sol on the decals after you have applied them but before you clear coat it. It softens the decals and makes them form over the fine details on the model. For example where the GWR logo sits on rivets. You would notice a big difference with Micro Sol.
Hi Tris. Excellent job, well done! I do a little upgrading to some of my locos, but not to your extent as I don't have the patience. Don't ever weather it as it would ruin the look of all your hard work. I am of the opinion that only in the BR period should weathering be entertained. A late friend of mine had a brother who used to drive steamers on the GWR (prairies) and he said that they used to keep their engines nice and clean but, when nationalisation was introduced, he never knew what engine he would be driving the next day. Consequently, all drivers lost interest in the appearance of the locos, and let them become filthy as there was no longer any incentive to clean them for obvious reasons. 👍
As an add-on to my previous comment, after I had done some 'improvements' to my Airfix 14xx, I painted the outside of the tyres matt black. This took away the 'toyish' look that it has when all of the tyres are chrome silver looking. She now looks much more authentic and like a 'shrunken' version of the real loco. I recommend you do the same as it would put a nice finishing touch to an already splendid looking loco. The good thing about steam engines is their character. They are not bland and boring like most diesel locos, except, of course, the small diesels that can be weathered to look the part as goods yard shunters. 👍
That’s a very good point. And thank you too I always end up disappointed with my locos when I weather the GWR locos. I did it to my dukedog and regretted it. I’ll have to look at cleaning it off and making it nice again 😊
Great idea with Outside Test Track shots. Granddad was a Rail worker the Hat he Wore was Leather. To stop Coal Ash setting it alight. Yes it was Glossy with a hint of Dust..! He would clean it and himself after every shift..!! His Hands would be Black with oil n Dust. Ingrained..!! Great work young Sir..! 😎
@@OONeal Yeah as a kid I was lucky to get a ride on the Foot plate, of what would have been one of the Last run of a Steam train. Between South Benfleet and Leigh on Sea. I don't think it was Allowed but I remember getting my bike from the Gaurds Van and Cycling back to Benfleet. It was Noisy, Hot, Windy and yet pure joy..! He gave me a pair of Old Motor bike Googles. ( which I still have.) To let me stick my head out ( like a Dog in a Car..!) It was on the Fenchurch/ Southend line..! ( Health n Safety Nightmare today..!) I got home Blackfaced and Overjoyed..! I also Recall standing on a Stone Bridge With a Steam train thundering underneath. Dad was hanging onto my Belt so I could see over the Stonework..! Steam and Soot was my main memory..! OO collection doesn't do it justice, but its the Best available to me now..!! 😎

Love these classic catalogs. I had one of the old Lima ones as a kid and read it so many times looking at the stuff you could get. Like the old car loader or the working breakdown crane. It blew my 6 year old mind.
Wow. Great job..! I have always wanted to bring my 70s Triang/Hornby Loco's into the 2020's but never been Brave enough to potentially Wreck a Functioning Loco. In a more Modern Detailing look..! Maybe now, I will give a 0.4.0 shunter that just looks Naff, even though its a Great little runner and even Crawls well. So when I have finnished my latest Project 1/35 Scale Rail gun. It looks great. Love the lamp irons and lamps, must get some. I have two of the Airfix models in lined BR green and they are so sweet. They can be difficult to get running smoothly but with some patience I have managed. Their back wheels are sprung by a brass strip that is strong enough to keep the wheels in contact with the track but not so strong as to lift the centre wheels off. It's a delicate balancing act (no pun intended) 😊 Meticulous work as always.
An absolute pleasure to watch you detailing the 14xx. A model always looks better for detailing and you have done well with the 14xx...1st thing I did was to get rid of the traction tyre-wheels, replace them with normal wheels and then fit a decent motor to each 14xx. Detailing and weathering then admire and back to normal duties. Pointless paying silly money on a more expensive model that you can't get spares for and the quality models are just that...silly money.
Great work on the 14xx, there are a lot of old models out there that are decent but can always benefit from a bit more detail. With the Hattons 14xx, like I said they go for stupid money and would say only get one if you really really really want one. If your upgraded one works well I would stick with that personally

Just been given an old K's whitmetal kit that needs some attention the detailing kits you used will be ideal to bring it up to standard. Thanks for posting your video. Brian.
Tris, you are waaaay better than me, but on the pet peave, I know I've said it a few times, whilst there should be no mould line on the smokebox, chimney or dome, there is almost always a seam on the top of the boiler because this is where the 'wrapping' meets. I've sanded it completely off before and some models don't have it anyway, but I try and leave what I can now. Feel like a pedant but you know it's with love: 48XX were auto fitted, 58XX were the non-auto fitted. The way more numerous 48XX lost their desginations to 2-8-0 28XXs that were converted to oil-burners late in GWR days. These all later went back to 28XX when returned to coal firing, but the Collett 0-4-2ts retained the 14XX they were reallocated to. Previously the 14XX numbers had been occupied by various 2-4-0t Metro Tanks and the direct predeccessor to the 14XX/48XX/58XX, the 0-4-2t 517 class which has a very very long history worth a look at. Anorak back on hook... great work as always, I have trouble with Airfix, Dapol and Hornby versions of these, they're one of my favourite classes of loco but in model form they always seem to disappoint, bobbing along and derailing over the slightest of point disruption

After watching the stream I picked up Hornby 1436 e/e from the bay and will use this video as a manual. A real inspiration, mate! I noticed the chimney on mine isn't painted either - odd, that. Also got a cheap Holden tank and I'll probably get one of your 12xx bodies to put on it rather than detail the original body. Now all I need to find is a Bachmann 57xx chassis and I have a branch-line worth of models... edit: now ordered ta :) I'd love to see a 517 class or the old open cab version of the 14xx.

@@OONeal It's going to be e/e shunting yard grot black (flat smokebox/running plates and satin boiler/tanks/bunker then caked in sooty filth, I reckon, seeing as all the rest of my locos and stock are depressing 50's grime. I love how terrible the mid fifties were, in fact I seriously considered painting my layout and all my stock in shades of black and grey.

I have models made by airfix dapol and hornby. They can all be made to run very very smoothly. Even the old airfix one is 5 pole. That spring has been either stretched or replaced. I've not had one do that. The sprung real wheels means very reliable pickup for slow running and normally work a treat
@@OONeal I have just realised I also have a white metal Ks kit version, with brass chassis and Romfords. It has a lovely feel but has nowhere near the detail of the other 3. Need to sell if really. Would make a quality base model to improve like you have done.

Lovely video and fantastic modelling skills, lovely to see the end result! After watching the video I decided to try using Vallejo paint, beforehand all I would use is Humbrol as it's what was mostly available in model shops local to me. Got it ordered on eBay and it finally arrived yesterday, decided to paint my Hudswell Clarke PLA tank in plain black and add detailing later. So far it's had about two coats on it but my god what a fantastic paint!! The finish looks superb! So I thought I'd thank you for the mentioning of Vallejo paint, think I have a new favourite now! Thanks Neal!
Great video. I have the Airfix version, I got it to go with an Airfix GWR autocoach (Didcot) . It only cost $55 Canadian (£35). I had to change the traction tyres, which I used the 10mm Marklin (thanks to Barrie Davis's channel)
@@OONeal yes they stretch over the wheel it’s a tight fit but they work really well. Check out Barry Davies ruclips.net/video/ukjNBsrtYkk/видео.html. I got them for my mallard and flying Scotsman (tender drive) but they are too narrow for the tyre groove. So I’m still looking for alternatives. I might try the liquid tyre “bullfrog snott” crazy name but apparently works well.

@@OONeal Not too bad if you find the right suppliers, I tried to buy a DJH Brass kit once and they tried to charge me £40 to post one kit. Needless to say I didn't bite, however London Road Models offered a much more reasonable cost of £13.
@@OONeal Usually the only way I make it worth it is to buy many small things at once, for example when I buy Gibson wheels I always buy at least 3 or 4 sets to make the postage charge worth it. Mainly you get good value if the package is posted through Royal Mail and not express services like FedEx or DHL. (Hattons for example is a good supplier for me as they charge less than £10 for most Royal Mail packages and around £22 for DHL express)

The 14xx is one of my favorite locomotives. Ordered a O gauge model from Dapol and its an amazing looking model. The detail on it is outstanding! Problem is… i have no way or place to run it. I live in the US and the track needed is hard to come by. So for the time being its a nice shelf piece along with my lionel prewar locomotives on my layout.
Hi Tris. I have just watched your video of the class 14xx upgrade and I thought it was brilliant. I have three of these model which I have picked up over the years and have had only rare opportunities to run them. I am hoping one day to do a conversion of one of them to an open cab variant from an article I read somewhere. They are beautiful little models but your upgrade took it a different level. It looks absolutely gorgeous I think. You call yourself a beginner but your work certainly contradicts that assumption. I thoroughly your videos and hope to keep watching for some time yet. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this video, would like to do some of these detail improvements to my Airfix 14xx at some point. One thing I've had done was actually replaced the wheels with traction tires with some spare wheels from a later Hornby one, essentially a Traction Tire Delete which I feel enhances the model even if that also hampers the adhesion. Should look good hauling a pair of Bachmann Autotrailers I feel
urge to get an airfix one to do up like this is now rising :P might even attempt to put a different motor in and move it forwards so i can have a cab in it, but either way, yet again what you've done here is stunning work :)
Thank you, I think to do something with the chassis would be good to complete the model. High level brass chassis kits would also be a good option I may end up doing.
Hi Neal, great blog, nice to see your close up work and well covered and spoken over throughout as you explained in detail. The company DAPOL was originally owned by Dave and Polly, so I always pronounce it as DaPol (DA for DAVE & POL for POLLY, put together) but then i hear it pronounced DAYPOL… Likewise, another well known model company name is HELJAN which is a Danish model railway company based in Søndersø as it’s Denmark, so it has a silent “J” so it’s HEL(j)AN or some pronounce by changing the sound of the J to an E, as in Hel(E)an…! but do not take my word for it as I pronounced them just the same as you did at one time, i guess someone from Denmark would be able to correct it or better still someone from HELJAN direct 😂 … thumbs up 👍 on your great work. I look forward to seeing more of your good work!

Excellent job. Think i've seen that film. Have you ever tride acrylic pens for detailing, anything that sticks out from the object your painting, the hard pen nib picks it out quite well , sometimes better than a brush a brush . I've haven't long been useing them but pleased so far with the results. Thanks for imparting more of your know how. Keep it up mate.

I get the question. So it was British railway green with lining and I wanted to make it GWR green which is differnt which also has no lining. This is why I ended up doing that. Does that make sence?
Whats the book you were looking at at 7:29 ? Does it have any more drawings? Im particularly looking for early westerners (pregrouping) but since I live in the US finding physical reference is rather difficult and online sources do a lot of telling but not a lot of showing

Thank you very much. I use a thick Rocket glue, you have to be careful as you need to use less but it is good. I hope you enjoy doing yours! Will you do a repaint too?
@@OONeal I managed to snatch a BR Green, and considering 90% of my fleet is BR Green, I'll probably keep it that way, although attaching some detailing as you did in the video seems like a very enjoyable process, so I might eventually need to re-paint it in some parts, at least the buffer beam Thank you, most modelling glue we have around here won't stick properly, about time I got something decent
I would suggest to use enamel for the main colour. It covers so much better doesn't lose so much detail, and more of a rugged finish too. Brilliant ending though, made me laugh Tris
Great work on the upgrade! Sadly I don't think that your loco is the only 14xx with the rear axle springs being too strong. I have seen other moddellers on RUclips and forums with that issue.
Hello Paul, thank you. Ok glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed making it too! It ran well but I think would be better if I sorted the traction tyres or swapped them for another set of wheels. I think I will shoot a video with it on a coming episode as I have something which is associated with it 😁 hopefully you will tune it and come and watch that too?

Models are by definition little, so everything one does is little. Oh, and it's priming, not primering. Counsels of perfection I know, but then perfection is your thing.
I appreciate what your saying but I don’t plan what I am saying when I narrate over the top so i end up saying somethings without realising. Hello, so it’s called ‘GWR Engines, Names numbers types and classes’ it is a 1971 reprint of some old loco books from 1911,1928,1938 and 1946 all rolled into one. I hope that helps
@@OONeal Yup, those Hornby Type 7 motors can be troublesome...usually when overloaded, but running the 14xx with an auto-coach or light goods should be fine :)
One thing i always find with hornby in particular- too many different blacks- in my opinion its worth stripping the wheels and con rods off the chasis and painting all the black bits black, nothing looks more like black paint than black paint (as opposed to some paint, some plastic and some blackened metal)
Lovely work on your 14xx locomotive. But, the Hattons/DJ Models 14xx chassis is awful! Your dad’s kit built chassis is the best option if you want decent running.
Can you please buy a take n play dicast toy Henry the green engine like your 30 year old Hornsby one and do a review . You can find them at car boot sails I bought one second hand for 50p and also got a Thomas so can you please do a review on a take along Thomas and Henry thx

Tris, you are waaaay better than me, but on the pet peave, I know I've said it a few times, whilst there should be no mould line on the smokebox, chimney or dome, there is almost always a seam on the top of the boiler because this is where the 'wrapping' meets. I've sanded it completely off before and some models don't have it anyway, but I try and leave what I can now.
Feel like a pedant but you know it's with love: 48XX were auto fitted, 58XX were the non-auto fitted. The way more numerous 48XX lost their desginations to 2-8-0 28XXs that were converted to oil-burners late in GWR days. These all later went back to 28XX when returned to coal firing, but the Collett 0-4-2ts retained the 14XX they were reallocated to. Previously the 14XX numbers had been occupied by various 2-4-0t Metro Tanks and the direct predeccessor to the 14XX/48XX/58XX, the 0-4-2t 517 class which has a very very long history worth a look at.
Anorak back on hook... great work as always, I have trouble with Airfix, Dapol and Hornby versions of these, they're one of my favourite classes of loco but in model form they always seem to disappoint, bobbing along and derailing over the slightest of point disruption

I noticed the chimney on mine isn't painted either - odd, that.
Also got a cheap Holden tank and I'll probably get one of your 12xx bodies to put on it rather than detail the original body. Now all I need to find is a Bachmann 57xx chassis and I have a branch-line worth of models...

@@OONeal It's going to be e/e shunting yard grot black (flat smokebox/running plates and satin boiler/tanks/bunker then caked in sooty filth, I reckon, seeing as all the rest of my locos and stock are depressing 50's grime. I love how terrible the mid fifties were, in fact I seriously considered painting my layout and all my stock in shades of black and grey.

Funnily enough I also bought an Airfix 1400 at Doncaster, just a year later
I have models made by airfix dapol and hornby. They can all be made to run very very smoothly. Even the old airfix one is 5 pole. That spring has been either stretched or replaced. I've not had one do that. The sprung real wheels means very reliable pickup for slow running and normally work a treat

@@OONeal Hi Tris. Between 5 and 10 years. So as you can imagine none are new. They all can be made to run beautifully with little maintenance.

@@OONeal I have just realised I also have a white metal Ks kit version, with brass chassis and Romfords. It has a lovely feel but has nowhere near the detail of the other 3. Need to sell if really. Would make a quality base model to improve like you have done.

I’ve been meaning to get round to watching this video for a while now and so glad I have. That model looks absolutely stunning and I will be taking all your hints and tips on board when I get round to improving my 14xx
Lovely video and fantastic modelling skills, lovely to see the end result! After watching the video I decided to try using Vallejo paint, beforehand all I would use is Humbrol as it's what was mostly available in model shops local to me.
Got it ordered on eBay and it finally arrived yesterday, decided to paint my Hudswell Clarke PLA tank in plain black and add detailing later. So far it's had about two coats on it but my god what a fantastic paint!! The finish looks superb!
So I thought I'd thank you for the mentioning of Vallejo paint, think I have a new favourite now!

Great video. I have the Airfix version, I got it to go with an Airfix GWR autocoach (Didcot) . It only cost $55 Canadian (£35).
I had to change the traction tyres, which I used the 10mm Marklin (thanks to Barrie Davis's channel)

I got them for my mallard and flying Scotsman (tender drive) but they are too narrow for the tyre groove.
So I’m still looking for alternatives.
I might try the liquid tyre “bullfrog snott” crazy name but apparently works well.

I can confirm the springy back wheels are a thing from the factory. My own 14XX No 1410 has the same feeling trailing wheels.

@@OONeal Not too bad if you find the right suppliers, I tried to buy a DJH Brass kit once and they tried to charge me £40 to post one kit. Needless to say I didn't bite, however London Road Models offered a much more reasonable cost of £13.
@@OONeal Usually the only way I make it worth it is to buy many small things at once, for example when I buy Gibson wheels I always buy at least 3 or 4 sets to make the postage charge worth it.
Mainly you get good value if the package is posted through Royal Mail and not express services like FedEx or DHL. (Hattons for example is a good supplier for me as they charge less than £10 for most Royal Mail packages and around £22 for DHL express)

i would recommend the old dapol ones of these, i have one from around 1995 and it runs better than most models now plus it will crawl for days

The old Airfix models had 'traction tyres' (basically a rubber band) on the rear drivers which were of little use.
This one has it too. My fathers one he removed that wheel set and moved to normal wheels which is something I should look into.
The 14xx is one of my favorite locomotives. Ordered a O gauge model from Dapol and its an amazing looking model. The detail on it is outstanding! Problem is… i have no way or place to run it. I live in the US and the track needed is hard to come by. So for the time being its a nice shelf piece along with my lionel prewar locomotives on my layout.
Hi Tris. I have just watched your video of the class 14xx upgrade and I thought it was brilliant. I have three of these model which I have picked up over the years and have had only rare opportunities to run them. I am hoping one day to do a conversion of one of them to an open cab variant from an article I read somewhere. They are beautiful little models but your upgrade took it a different level. It looks absolutely gorgeous I think. You call yourself a beginner but your work certainly contradicts that assumption. I thoroughly your videos and hope to keep watching for some time yet. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this video, would like to do some of these detail improvements to my Airfix 14xx at some point. One thing I've had done was actually replaced the wheels with traction tires with some spare wheels from a later Hornby one, essentially a Traction Tire Delete which I feel enhances the model even if that also hampers the adhesion. Should look good hauling a pair of Bachmann Autotrailers I feel
urge to get an airfix one to do up like this is now rising :P might even attempt to put a different motor in and move it forwards so i can have a cab in it, but either way, yet again what you've done here is stunning work :)
Thank you, I think to do something with the chassis would be good to complete the model. High level brass chassis kits would also be a good option I may end up doing.

The company DAPOL was originally owned by Dave and Polly, so I always pronounce it as DaPol (DA for DAVE & POL for POLLY, put together) but then i hear it pronounced DAYPOL…
Likewise, another well known model company name is HELJAN which is a Danish model railway company based in Søndersø as it’s Denmark, so it has a silent “J” so it’s HEL(j)AN or some pronounce by changing the sound of the J to an E, as in Hel(E)an…! but do not take my word for it as I pronounced them just the same as you did at one time, i guess someone from Denmark would be able to correct it or better still someone from HELJAN direct 😂 … thumbs up 👍 on your great work. I look forward to seeing more of your good work!

Excellent job. Think i've seen that film. Have you ever tride acrylic pens for detailing, anything that sticks out from the object your painting, the hard pen nib picks it out quite well , sometimes better than a brush a brush . I've haven't long been useing them but pleased so far with the results. Thanks for imparting more of your know how. Keep it up mate.

I get the question. So it was British railway green with lining and I wanted to make it GWR green which is differnt which also has no lining. This is why I ended up doing that. Does that make sence?
Whats the book you were looking at at 7:29 ? Does it have any more drawings? Im particularly looking for early westerners (pregrouping) but since I live in the US finding physical reference is rather difficult and online sources do a lot of telling but not a lot of showing

Thank you very much. I use a thick Rocket glue, you have to be careful as you need to use less but it is good. I hope you enjoy doing yours! Will you do a repaint too?
@@OONeal I managed to snatch a BR Green, and considering 90% of my fleet is BR Green, I'll probably keep it that way, although attaching some detailing as you did in the video seems like a very enjoyable process, so I might eventually need to re-paint it in some parts, at least the buffer beam

I would suggest to use enamel for the main colour. It covers so much better doesn't lose so much detail, and more of a rugged finish too.

Great work on the upgrade! Sadly I don't think that your loco is the only 14xx with the rear axle springs being too strong. I have seen other moddellers on RUclips and forums with that issue.
I see, it’s a shame I imagine a lot of people would have been put off by it in the past. I don’t suppose you have a 14xx too?
@@OONeal I don't have a 14xx unfortunately. I model the North East so it wouldn't fit in with my A3, j27, j72s etc.

Models are by definition little, so everything one does is little. Oh, and it's priming, not primering. Counsels of perfection I know, but then perfection is your thing.
I appreciate what your saying but I don’t plan what I am saying when I narrate over the top so i end up saying somethings without realising. Hello, so it’s called ‘GWR Engines, Names numbers types and classes’ it is a 1971 reprint of some old loco books from 1911,1928,1938 and 1946 all rolled into one. I hope that helps

They may do but so far mine has been ok. Hopefully it stays that way
@@OONeal Yup, those Hornby Type 7 motors can be troublesome...usually when overloaded, but running the 14xx with an auto-coach or light goods should be fine :)
Great Western engines are Right hand drive,,,
One thing i always find with hornby in particular- too many different blacks- in my opinion its worth stripping the wheels and con rods off the chasis and painting all the black bits black, nothing looks more like black paint than black paint (as opposed to some paint, some plastic and some blackened metal)
Is your dad's kit chassis the High Level kit? Looks interesting.

Lovely work on your 14xx locomotive. But, the Hattons/DJ Models 14xx chassis is awful! Your dad’s kit built chassis is the best option if you want decent running.

14xx is a reclassified 48xx (these are autotrain fitted), 58xx are not autotrain fitted. All the locos in preservation are 14/48xx

Only if they arnt really GWR green but if I do it’s only light weathering as the locos were well kept from what’s been explained to me.
