    I love your haul and I love your kitchen days. I also love being prepared especially when I know my household income will be less than usual.

      Thank you so much for those kind words, Brenda! Being prepared took on a whole new meaning for me this year. Last year we went through a nine month layoff which came unexpectedly and we weren't prepared at all. So I'm trying to get ahead of the game while I can for when it happens again. My husband does contract work and once the job is done, he's basically out of work until another job starts again. We know it's coming soon, unfortunately.

    Hi Mandi, just a helpful hint about staggering the ripening bananas: take a small piece of aluminum foil and wrap it around the stem of the bunch of bananas...it truly does slow the ripening process!

    Thanks for sharing your haul. I really enjoy watching Canadian grocery hauls because I'm a California girl living in Vancouver and have a difficult time figuring out food budget here as the prices are very different from back home. I would love to see a grocery budget video

    • @SweetlyHome
      @SweetlyHome  7 лет назад +2

      Hi! So exciting that you found me! I'm a Pennsylvania gal living here in Ontario. When I first moved here, it was so overwhelming figuring out prices, kg, ml and whatnot. And then the money...it took me far too long to remember the difference between a loonie and a toonie. ;) I was young, lol. If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to hear what brought you to Canada and how you are liking it. So for grocery budgeting, I am working on overhauling my budget and really putting a system in place on what we eat and how we shop. I'm trying to baby step my way to a more whole foods lifestyle so that's playing a big factor into how I shop right now. But I will pass on a few tips until I can finally put the video together. The first is to always watch the ads. I use an app called Flipp. It's wonderful. It shows all the store ads for your area. You can even search a particular item or ingredient - like strawberries - and it brings back everything available that week as far as strawberries are concerned. That way you can get the best deal. When I order deli meat, I always tell them I want "half a pound" or "a pound" and I've never had an issue with them being able to weigh the meat that way. I also tend to shop at just a couple of stores. One out my way is called Food Basics. I'm thinking it's like No Frills...I'm not 100% because it's not in my area. But basically this chain of stores is very basic and are the most discounted as far as food goes. I find that even the regular price on items is much cheaper than I can get in another grocery store. So I often purchase my staples there. The fruit and veggies can be hit or miss for me. The prices are usually the lowest but sometimes the quality is off. I try and shop on a Thursday or Friday to beat the weekend rush and get things before they are picked over. Anyways, those are a few tips. I hope they can be of some help.

    • @theheynhappening2444
      @theheynhappening2444 7 лет назад

      SweetlyHome - Mandi wow! Thanks so much for your awesome reply! Yes I do use flipp and it is helpful but I prob should take a closer look at it each week. Also searching for items on there is a great tip. We do have a no frills which I go to often. I think the big thing is prices on meat or so different. I never know if I'm getting a good deal lol. I think I need to just better pay attention and take notes. Lol. I have a hilarious story about a loonie too and not knowing what it was called. Thanks for your great videos. Oh and our family moved here so my husband could attend Regent college which is on UBC campus. He is now getting a job a hospital chaplin here so this will most likely be home for a few more years at least

      @SweetlyHome  7 лет назад

      That's so great about your husbands job! How wonderful! I've never been to Vancouver but I always hear how nice it is. I'd love to visit one day. And yesssssss....the meat. I struggle in this area big time. This is one of those areas in my grocery budget I really need to work on. I'm pretty good when it comes to dry goods and fruit/veggies on what is a good price but when it comes to meat, it all goes out the window. I really need to work on this area!

    Hi Mandi!! What a great haul. The chalkboard picture you have on the counter...is that from Lily & Val? If it is, I love their pictures. I recently got their calendar for this year. Thanks for sharing your haul. Have a great day!!

      It is Lily & Val! I love them too! I bought several of their greeting cards a year or so ago and just place them in frames seasonally. In fact, I need to switch that one out because it's about hot cocoa. :) I love their calendars too! I bought one a couple of years ago and hung onto it for the artwork. Such talent! And good eye, my friend! :)

    Huge haul! Do you just pick up fruit and vegetables each week once you run out? I always buy the Kirkland brand of chocolate chips, they taste better and are less processed. Thanx for sharing! xoxo

    • @SweetlyHome
      @SweetlyHome  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Lisa! Sometimes we pick up fresh produce in between but it's becoming less and less. We tend to eat the things that will perish quickly, first. Things such as the berries. Then we eat up things that may seem to be turning or getting overly ripe. And lastly, things like the apples and citrus seem to last until it's time to shop again. I supplement with frozen fruits and veggies for any gaps. And thanks for the tip on the Kirkland chocolate chips!

    • @Lisa6812
      @Lisa6812 7 лет назад

      SweetlyHome - Mandi we seem to go through produce weekly. Apples and oranges last longer and lettuce too. I also buy frozen blueberries from Costco, Moov brand is my fav. I try to bake most of our snacks. Ohhh do you have the bread recipe you've mentioned? I want to make bread too. I have one recipe but was curious about yours. 😃

      I just found it!
      homejoys.blogspot.ca/2011/01/country-white-bread.html
      I did make a Honey Whole Wheat bread that is delicious and thought I'd pass this along as well. It was really light and fluffy. My family loved it. The thumbnail has three loaves of bread but she says that her recipe makes two. However, it made three loaves for us. www.sixsistersstuff.com/2016/03/great-harvest-honey-whole-wheat-bread-copycat.html#_a5y_p=5124510

    You are so lovely:-) Loved your video. Little tip to help the environment... try using lunch and freezer boxes rather that zips as they really are bad for our environment. I changed 10 years ago now and never looked back:-)

    • @SweetlyHome
      @SweetlyHome  7 лет назад +4

      Thank you, Sally! And you are so right on the plastic bags. I tend to use the freezer bags for storing freezer meals and meat in the freezer. I think my husband snuck those sandwich bags in the cart because I didn't put them there, lol. I do usually use reusable containers for my daughter's lunches though your gentle reminder was something I'll take to heart more for my husbands lunches. Thank you for that.

  • @lisaanders5374

    How do you store and pour the milk?? Seems awkward lol

    • @SweetlyHome
      @SweetlyHome  7 лет назад

      Haha, it is awkward! So we have these skinny milk pitchers that the bag slips into. You have to sort of bang the jug down to get the bag in place. I can never get it in the jug right. And then you snip a little corner off of the bag and pour. It's weird. :) But I suppose it's good for the landfill, lol.

      I can also get milk in a bag and live in the US. I buy my milk at a Kwik Trip (gas station). Right now they are $0.99 a half gallon for 1% and I had a $1 off coupon when I buy two, so basically a gallon of milk was $0.98 total (in two half gallon bags).

    • @BrendaC-cf7td
      @BrendaC-cf7td 7 лет назад

      It's our milk in Canada costs more. The lowest price at Walmart is 4.97$ for a 4 liter bag. Prices are definitely higher here. I'm finding , Trying to grow some tomatoes.
