On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.

Your content is significantly more immersive than a documentary. Instead of watching a camera snake it's way through the land, you take a much more personal approach to capturing the environment by filming and narrating in a way that takes us along with you. Immersive stuff isn't for everyone, but it truly is peak content.

Gly, this is the best episode you have ever aired, and I have watched all of them. Gly you are emulating the UK/BBC style of documentary shows. In the UK you have presenters, not narrators. A presenter is an on-screen person whose commentary moves you through the scenes. These presenters are always acknowledged experts on the topic of the show. In BBC geographical shows you are placed in the landscape then the presenter arrives to walk you through it. An excellent example of this and it has an above-ground feel to your show is Julia Bradbury’s Wainwright Walks, (2013). Julia Bradbury uses the guide books of the fell walker of the British Lake District Alfred Wainwright to walk you through the hill country of the Lake District So your new style is fantastic and one I have enjoyed for many, many years.
“Gly”: Thank you very much! One of my favorite shows was Top Gear and I do incorporate some of those techniques into my production such as the “in cab” sequences. I just feel that without proper presentation the work feels very 2-dimensional and that’s why I try hard to bring my audience into the space.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces 2 dimensional is a good description of the other mine exploration shows. You learn very little about the mine other than it is a hole in the ground. The one addition to your efforts that would be great is learning about the people who worked in these mines. The arduous work we see in blasting, mucking, framing, and track laying, is impressive. Just the work required to move around in these mines is astonishing. Most of the people who did this are long gone but learning their stories would put a human provenance on what you show us.
One example, in one of your earlier shows you visited a work site and there was the tombstone of the mine owner (?) you properly respected the privacy of his family. It would be interesting to learn his story.
I have been binging you videos since I have started following your channel. I follow a lot of mine hunters and I must say, you by far have the best filming out of any Channel that I follow. Crisp clear shots, no wobbly constant movement. Just good clean footage! It's a pleasure to watch your channel! I'm addicted!

Well I personally have enjoyed all your different intros and shooting styles. You don't have to copy Hollywood to be good. Enjoyed your tennis ball on you walking stick as much as google earth shots. Drone shots to add deeper understanding of different mountains. I do miss you talking about the geology more. The tungsten mine seem like tan hole. In the gold mine videos you point out mineralization of what was being chased. The prize if you will. Thanks for being our eyes and legs.

"Constant colonoscopy" I just had to laugh at that one. Though I do think it's a very important element of any episode. The trick, which I think you're well on the way to mastering, is to use just the right amount of it. I do like you setting the camera down and talking to us in person where we can see your full body height. This works incredibly well in giving us the spatial feel of the mine and the ability to place ourselves in it. I do think your keeping the few seconds of placing the camera down and then stepping back from it is really important. It's not only a connected transition between two different types, it adds to the feeling of reality, of our being with you, being part of the process. I've always appreciated your editing, especially as you realize that it's important not to edit too much. Rough edges make things real, help us feel connected with you. Just like in regular life; when you have friends over, you don't feel you have to dress up. ... As long as you keep it real, don't go too Hollywood on us, I'll love each new innovation you think up. ... Though I think the real secret, something no amount of technique or innovation can ever replace, is your friendly personality, the delight and enthusiasm you take in improving the project, and your eagerness to share it with us.
I admit I generally prefer the First Person Shooter viewpoint when walking through the long corridors (that does a lot more for the "being there" feel, IMO), but it's really nice to see perspective in the big-ass structures -- those stopes suddenly look a whole lot bigger when there's a warm body in sight. Also, one can never have enough skyview.
What really sets your vids apart isn't just the style, it's the editing -- which is largely cutting out the boring parts. I'm not here to watch someone's face, or their ass bouncing up a ladder -- I'm here to see the mines, and how the miners lived and worked.
The intro/outro music is brilliant stuff. Doesn't get old.

GLY, thanks for the epic camera work, you really put us viewers on the spot..hanging over the edge of places where not many of us would even dare to climb...it sure does give the sphincter muscles a good workout..we much appreciate the risks you take to show us the places you do. I am amazed by the quality of timber utilized to construct the mine structures. Its all so clear; usually, not a *knot* in sight!
Gly: Some of the 360 shots are wonderful and make me feel like I was right there. I especially like when you lay the camera down, talk to it then walk around it to the front so it follows you. One particular shot of that huge stopped area was just perfect. It showed how vast it must have been. Keep experimenting I like it. Dean in Arizona. (I noticed the bucket writing too)
“Gly”: It’s fun trying all these different camera techniques and I think I’ve got it dialed in pretty good taking into consideration the environment. The fun thing for me is watching programs on the Discovery Channel and History Channel. These platforms have million dollar budgets with nearly limitless resources and they go into underground situations with a FPV camera (that they can’t hold still), a headlamp and a flashlight. Lol
I really appreciate all your effort, exploring all these caves ! I enjoy each one of these episodes thank you, your friend in the backwoods of Kentucky.
Great job on the weight loss Gly keep it up. I was at 260 or so when covid kicked off. Decided I was nearing 40 and needed to shed the weight. I saw 199 on the scale the other night. I bet I was fatter than that in middle school.

You deserve everything you can get from this "exploring category" on youtube, your footage is up there with most of the Discovery channel level documentaries. Hey Gly, I'd suggest coming up with a sling or something so you can carry your handheld camera rig without using your hands. When you're free climbing old ladders like that, you want all limbs available to climb with. 3 point contact can save your life.

Love how you explain your process for creating these videos Gly. I found that interesting.
Your audio is way above most others, and an example of that is when you placed the camera down near that sluicer to step back and talk us through that filled-in orepass next to the track; you had your back to the camera as you were walking into position and we could still hear you talking clear as day! It confused me for a minute lol.
I subscribed in early 2020 during the lock down. Not only have I kept viewing due to your explanations of the mining process and geology, but you've constantly improved your film directing, editing and equipment. You're doing it right. Keep going. Oh and keep losing the LBs.

You do a great job of keeping the viewers oriented. On some other channels, it is really hard (or even impossible) to keep track of where we've been or which direction we're going. I also appreciate the slow, deliberate camera movements which avoids triggering motion sickness that so many of the FPV channels cause. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely agree Joseph Kosinski is an awesome visionary with his films. Oblivion is such an underrated film that is so visually beautiful as well as Tron legacy. Looking forward to Top Gun Maverick not only to see what he brought to the film but also I'm kinda partial being from San Diego and growing up around NAS Miramar with the original film. Love the mine exploring, be safe out there.
“Gly”: I know huh? I’ve probably watched Oblivion somewhere between 50 - 100 times and I’m always finding new elements. Definitely one of the most underrated science-fiction films out there.

Hello Gly, excellent video. I really like how you explain the workings of these mines. Congrats on losing weight. Doesn't feel good when you put on some clothes and they are looser then they used to be. Beginning of last year I was 252 and now I'm 195. Fitting into older clothes from the back of the closet. Just minimized the carbs. And practically giving up sugar as I was told I had type 2 Diabetes.
“Gly”: Yep! That’s what I’m doing and it’s working! 👍
Love the videos. Have to figure out some sort of sling for your camera set up to make it easier for you to get thru those tough spots without holding that in one hand.
“Gly”: I had one once but the sling was getting snagged on things and it was always getting in the way and disrupting camera control. It was far more of a hindrance than a help.
At least the rungs are inset part way into the stringers, instead of relying only on the fasteners to hold them in place.

I think the fish eyelids need to get replaced. Reason is because it is hard to tell if one of the support beams is bending under the weight or not, making it seems either more dangerous than it is or hiding a real danger in the footage.
Great video sound and explore love watching it.
You might want to bring along an Inogen 2 unit. Might help. Not cheap but worth it
