For everyone who wants to know the legend behind this composition, as the title suggests, it centers around the Noon Witch, or Lady Midday (a demon from Slavic mythology who haunted cultivated fields, causing sickness to everyone who meets her). Now, regarding the composition, there's a precise plot here: a mother kept telling her son that, if he wouldn't behave, the Noon Witch would have come to get him. He doesn't believe her but, as the clock strokes noon, the Witch appears, trying to kidnap the child. The mother runs away with her baby in her arms, but the Witch runs after them: the chase ends with the mother passing out. When she wakes up, she finds her husband in tears: when she passed away she collapsed, fell on the baby and smothered him to death. The story ends tragically, with the father screaming and mourning the death of his son.
Thank you very much for the story. It make this wonderful piece of music even better.

That's so tragic
I think Dvorak is somewhat underrated as a great composer. I don't mean he isn't popular, just the opposite, the popularity of the 9th symphony has possibly to some degree been detrimental to his rightful place as one of the very greatest of the Romantic composers. I love his tone poems, the 7th and 8th symphonies are among the very best and the not often heard Requiem contains much sublime music and is the equal or near equal to any other ever written, certainly IMO equal to Verdi's much more performed work.
This tone poem once again illustates both the qualities of the orchestration of Dvorak and his musical imagination. These qualities are particulerly obvous in his last tone poems, among which this one. The rendition by Ozawa is outstanding.

I've always loved this piece, and this is a fine rendition.
Love the wind instruments!
Yes the bassoon part is utter hell to play but is fun too
Thanks for this amazing opus 🙏
