I've listened to this song several times today and wept every time. My church is named St. Joan of Arc in Pflugerville, Texas, and we celebrated her feast day last Sunday. The duet with Leonard Cohen was playing before church started, but I didn't listen to it seriously until today. I'm weeping now. 5:08
Jennifer Warnes rendition of Joan D'Arc is very beautiful, so much so that my hair stands on edge. Superlative. Her music evokes spirituality. It courses through my soul. Viv Joan D'Arc, Patron of France. Pray for us.
A great work by Leonard Cohen, beautiful interpreted by Jennifer Warnes. To all who don't know the history of Joan of Arc, her miraculous life is one of the most extraordinary in the history of humanity. At the age of 19, after suffering the ordeal of an unjust and illegal trial in Rouen, she was burnt alive in the presence of 800 soldiers and ten thousand citizens. The memory of her faith, the essential tale of Joan's passage, shall shine on until the end of time.
Thank you for not forgetting her. There are so many innocent people, men and women, hung or killed mercilessly for doing the right thing, all over the world, and even in the western world, so many men, women, and CHILDREN figuratively burned at the stake of injustice within society, education, and our legal system.
23/03/2121.The comments on this page speak volumes. I AGREE! Peace to Leonard and thank you Jennifer...I trust that you are still singing this beautiful song. Where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake is in Rouen, France; a memorial is to be seen at that location.
Wow, quite a powerful performance with the voice of Jennifer Warnes. At first, she seems nervous and off the beat of the song, then she seems more emotionally overwhelmed the longer she sings. It's a very stirring performance, filled out with the orchestra and backup chorus, etc.
this should have been recorded in 1992, Night of the Prom in Antwerp......omg so long ago. One of my all time favourite singers, her "famous blue raincout' album is one of the best I have. Wonder how she is doing, what a great talent.
+Suteruni Susanto Jennifer is doing quite well.....in fact just today updated recent news at "the website" www.jenniferwarnes.com.....also there is a Facebook fan site that I relay messages to.
JENNY, I LOVE YOU (C)2006 JENNY, I LOVE YOU. JENNY, I NEED YOU. JENNY I WANT YOU TONIGHT. FIRST TIME I SAW YOU . YOU WERE WATCHING ME SING. THE LOOK IN YOUR EYES TOLD EVERYTHING. Jennifer Warnes has a gorgeous voice with great emotional range, and her rendition of this and other Leonard Cohen songs on her album Famous Blue Raincoat are the definitive versions, in my view. This live performance is effective but not really Warnes at her best. I feel a sense of nervousness affecting her performance of the song, so that at times she isn't hitting the notes or projecting the song as strongly as I know she can. I'm no expert in the field, but I can hear when a vocalist is on and when she's not quite on--especially since I know Jennifer Warnes recordings when she's in her best voice.
I am VERY VERY confused by this video. There is another video just like it, with the same conductor in the same blue suit, and seemingly the same orchestra, and -- who knows -- maybe the same audience, but no choir, and Warnes is wearing different clothes, and she looks to be a different age, and the sonics of the other video are much better. Was it some kind of tradition for her to sing this song every year in Belgium?
To answer my own question, apparently it WAS a tradition. The version of this performance that occurred in 1992 shows a person a little older but still in great voice. Most importantly, that version of the performance has much clearer video and much clearer audio. I recommend that people seek out that version to listen to. Jennifer Warnes ranks with Joni Mitchell and Dionne Warwick as one of the greatest female vocalists of our age. The nuance of her singing is off the scale.

Yes, tears and chills... some of us with ears 'get' this...
God have mercy. I am weeping over the years l first heard this exquisite song. I hope this doesn’t sound too weird, but God bless Leonard Cohen.
Hearing this just reminds me what a treasure the entire Famous Blue Raincoat album is. Deserves listening to daily!
I still turn to it regularly. Absolutely great recordings.
Agreed. There have been years of at least once a day playing Famous Blue Raincoat for me. An incredible pairing 💜

Does anyone know the year of this performance? I prefer this one to the 1992 Belgium Proms performance.
1992, Rotterdam (the week before Antwerpen, Belgium)
The sound?
