Pretty good film. Wish I had friends like these two. They have his back. Good thriller. My son starter hearing growling in his room when we got a dresser from the thrift store..He was 11. It had a weird sticker on it. He removed the sticker at 12 and the growling stopped.
Good short, but I can't stand when movies do the obvious, like not taking the dresser out the house, Even if you put it in the garage until the investigation was complete
This is how these people become great names in film. Off beat Film shorts. Like George Lucas THX 1138. In the beginning it’s like “WTF!?” Fast forward to as of late. Kinda Killing it. Cinematic Evolution starts from somewhere. Just that simple.
@@jaredlobato5264 I used Neat Video on basically every clip whether it was shot at 800 or 12800. Since there was no internal NR on the RAW it cleaned up very nicely. I then added film grain in using FilmConvert with a specific grain curve. If you shoot RAW be prepared to do a lot of NR to make the footage look nice as it is very noisy (specifically ugly chroma noise) at both base ISOs. Also, you have to create a specific NR curve in Neat Video for each clip to get the best results.
Excellent short. If that was me from the moment I woke up and the chest had moved I would have taken it out of my room. But hey that is the difference between a film and reality😂😎

Professionally done. Obviously what you do at 20 won't be what you do at 30. Things I liked: 1) They took the time to get actual adults to play the parents. I respect the struggle but it's distracting when the "parents" are obviously the same age. 2) Reliably avoided the kind of traps that make bad horror movies really frustrating. 3) Told a good, kind of traditional feature length-style horror movie in 24 minutes. 4) The noticable character shift of the main character from sleepy, normal, kind of uninteresting kid, who basically loves his parents, to the concerned main character. 5) The credibly played moment of violence where he's bashing her head. Things I didn't like: 1) I think there's a tendency when people are eradicating all horror faux pas to overdo it. Like, announcing you're sticking together is unnecessary, and are people really getting into research and newspapers that fast? 2) no bloodied make-up or bruising after he smashed his feiend's head in.
Pretty good in my opinion!! With a lot more practice and continuing your movie making, you guys could be really popular! I liked the idea, and i know it's not always easy to find perfect actors, especially when you have school etc.. But they did a good job anyway! Thx i appreciated it!!
I really enjoyed this - very well done! I'd love to know what you used to get the camera movements so smooth. Great characters, believable, appropriate sound effects - pretty much a home run!
Thanks! So to get those super smooth shots I had the FX3 + RS3 Pro gimbal mounted on a tripod which was on a dolly track system. You have to get a special plate to mount the gimbal without its battery to the tripod and then supply external power. Then in post I could add a bit of stabilization and you're left with a super smooth shot. Most of the short film was shot using the RS3 Pro gimbal either on the dolly or handheld. The shot of the car approaching the mansion I was actually in a wheelchair holding the gimbal.
Also I've gotten very good at eliminating the 4th axis (footsteps) while hand holding the gimbal. Most of the mansion scenes were shot hand holding the gimbal. It just takes a lot of time to master the synched arm movements to cancel out your footsteps.
Reminds me of the muddy hand from diary of a wimpy kid lol but I also read somewhere that this was made by students in a week or something? If so that’s cool asf tbh
@@KaceyBakerFilms Thanks! Final timeline was over 1TB in size haha. We used the Rode NTG3B with a boom operator. It was directly plugged into the FX3 XLR handle for the whole thing which got tricky when we had the camera on a dolly/gimbal. Just didn't have the turnaround time available to record to my H4N Pro and then have to link the audio. Audio still was pretty good for the most part, I can't remember what bit depth it was set to, probably 24bit. Used FCPs voice isolation a decent amount, really helped reduce background noise.
Thanks mate. You blitzed it! Some of the shots have you questioning is it really an fx3, which is a testimony to you and your team. Forget those clowns on here trolling, block them out.
@@KaceyBakerFilms Thanks! The crew, lighting, sound, and camera movement all are more important than just what camera you use. Sure it's nice to have "pro" tools such as a Venice but the FX3 punches way above its weight! Now if only they'd add noise reduction settings so you could turn the heavy internal noise reduction off the internal codecs would be way better!
Really funny horror with nice likable characters.Id like to see more of their "investigation" work. P.s. the hand cant be burnt in a regular fire, they should have taken it to crematorium, or to mount doom.
Very well done! I really enjoyed it! Good cinematography, nice camera moves, good acting.. very pleasing to watch! The only thing I didn’t like is the big group laugh at the end.. the call was funny, but far from hilarious.. so it would’ve been funnier to me done in a more deadpan/dry humour way. Other than that, BRAVO!!! 👏🏼
'i thought you could use a new dresser', she says while standing in a room with THREE dressers in it. the girl who weighs 240lbs at the table saying dude looks like crap, while sitting next to a grass roots activist is rich. i cant relate with anything these kids do or how they bahave, theyre so corny & boring. all they do is talk, eat toast, sleep and get coffee.
Haunted house rule number one: don’t go in the basement. Haunted house rule number two: don’t split up. But what really boggles my mind is that in this mansion full of incredible antiques, the parents pick up a shitty old dresser that most people would’ve left at the curb to give to their son. Makes zero sense to me.
Certainly way more cinematic than most shorts on this platform, I do however find the lack of static shots a bit overwhelming. If I may offer any critique, it's to not overly rely on camera-pan during dialogues, it can take us away from being engrossed and positioning ourselves within the dialogue on screen, and its excessive use can come across as a bit 'amateurish' - for lack of a better word. I personally felt like the camera very seldom sat still if at all, it was always moving in some way or another, and while it's nice to see a bit more artistry in the cinematography it can be to your detriment to forego the power of a stationary shot. Otherwise, good short, and good on you for going beyond the basics!
Thanks for the constructive criticism! I do agree for some of the dialogue the camera could be stiller. I should just put it on a tripod vs dolly for some of those scenes. Horror films like Sinister 2 tend to do locked down dialogue shots but still have a little camera movement. We had very limited time shooting this short film (all shot in about 7 days with usually 2-3 hour time slots) so planning cinematography that would flow together was tough. The scene in the pub we only had about an hour with the actors so it gets a bit stressful haha.

No. You introduce the subject (the dresser) and then use it. Remember- this genre is horror. At night while the main char. is sleeping, something comes out of the dresser, or a drawer opens & main char. investigates, leading to something horrible happening. Action needs to escalate. There needs to be descending action, ascending action & a twist. Life gets worse. Usually in horror it ends in death or serious injury.
