Never heard the Mayfield version until years after this one. I love this one because of its energy; Weller had such a sense of urgency in his early days. Love it.
Three years on and this version is still better than the original. I lied about having nothing else to say about that. The Jam, as good today as they have ever been.
I always wondered why Mr Weller went in this direction with his music...obviously being young at the time...now I knew why...and he took the right way!!!!!
Have a close listen to the percussion on the Curtis Mayfield version; for me, amazing, because I never really heard the drums listening to it on the tranny radio in the workshop at my first job in '72.
mod isnt a genre of music. the original mods listened to soul, ska, what came to be known as mod rnb, which bands like the who and small faces have their basis, all sorts. so no, paul weller isnt moving away from "Mod", his sticking to his roots in mod influenced music, just adopting a different perspective.
The Jam is on my short list of all time favorite bands, but this is 100% Curtis's song. Can't even listen to the whole thing. It sounds like Weller is in a big hurry to be done with the Jam and form Style Council.
Well put there young man or lady ;-) Weller was good at this but he's no Curtis Mayfield, and Curtis is no Weller.......... But me ???? I liked them both but Curtis wins it !!!
Hey people its not a question of either or but BOTH! Like should i have choclate or should i have pepermint ice cream on my cone...i prefer ...BOTH!!! KerimMod4Ever Has Thus Spoken The Truth ps. PW was even too shy to share the satge with curtis when he invited him onstage!!!
True. It is brave to try to cover the song and they did ok, but it doesn't match the original. To be fair Curtis Mayfield was a poet and a musical prodigy, and his singing voice was excellent.
This is awful, what did they do? Listen to Curtis and think to themselves " you know what this needs, every ounce of funk drained from it until it's a angular stack of shite"? Because that's what happened
Bruce Foxton really was a superb bassist and laid down some super slick lines
nobody was cooler than Bruce Foxton....
Weller has a great feel for soul music; I generally hate covers, but his are the best.
It doesn't matter that I prefer the original version, this is easily one of my favourite ever cover versions
Respect, Mr Weller. Tony, August 2019, Thessaloniki, Greece.
C
Great cover!!!
Northern soul style

I saw Weller in Swindon on Friday night. The guy is just super cool, you would never think that he is 57 in May.
Love it .
Love version of paul and dee dueting from 85 or 86
Oh, my youth. I adored The Jam & Still do!! Always a Mod.
This opened the door for me to so, so much more. (Rick Buckler impresses the hell out of me here!)
Curties is one of a kind , but Paul Weller is on of the top 10 british musicians ever :)
Excellent Cover , thnx for uploading
A great song given a huge shot of adrenaline- fan bloody tastic. Anybody remember this being performed on the first edition of the Tube back in '82?
Great version and i admire the bravery of Weller if he got this wrong he would have been torn too bits!
Bravery❔Pul-lease… 🙄😑
Three years on and this version is still better than the original. I lied about having nothing else to say about that. The Jam, as good today as they have ever been.
Wow still inspirational miss the jam. X
Beautiful cover!! 👌🏻
I always wondered why Mr Weller went in this direction with his music...obviously being young at the time...now I knew why...and he took the right way!!!!!
passport to style council
SWEET I was looking for this cover version.
Love it 🎶
Impossible to stand still here !
Thanks Tes - been waiting for this for months - awesome!!!
Wow, they really do the song justice.
Curtis sowed the seeds Paul grew from them :)
I love it!
Wooooooooooooo!😉
Finally found a Jam song I actually like, and its a remake...lol
Have a close listen to the percussion on the Curtis Mayfield version; for me, amazing, because I never really heard the drums listening to it on the tranny radio in the workshop at my first job in '72.
This is a nice surprise. I don't think Mr. Mayfield would be offended.
even better than the original - so fresh and sharp bursting with energy. Love the middle extended break
I love Paul and the jam but Curtis is perfect
curtis is unreachable!
Great Band
in a way this song is different enough from curtis' that it can stand as it's own thing.
The jam were a great band! So tight so good . You don’t get bands like this today 💪💪💪💪💪
Go Paul weller always. X the jam. X
This won the day the moment I saw it existed. But they were kinda on the periphery of two-tone,I guess... So it makes they'd be down
カッコいい~
curtis is curtis, no doubt!!! this is different, but still cool
What year is this from? Was it a B-Side?
Thank you for your comment Henry :)

Actually, the very original (modernist) mods were listening to modern jazz, in the '50s.
WOW

It most certainly wasn't !!
Style council used to play it live but this is the jam on the beat surrender 12"
@@yewchewb67 I cant even remember writing this lol
Nice version anyway!
Hey people its not a question of either or but BOTH! Like should i have choclate or should i have pepermint ice cream on my cone...i prefer ...BOTH!!!
KerimMod4Ever Has Thus Spoken The Truth
ps. PW was even too shy to share the satge with curtis when he invited him onstage!!!
this is surprisingly good but nowhere near curtis's version
id say better than curtis's
True. It is brave to try to cover the song and they did ok, but it doesn't match the original.
To be fair Curtis Mayfield was a poet and a musical prodigy, and his singing voice was excellent.
It's Saturday night
this is pretty cool, but not a patch on Curtis'!
Maybe Bruce Foxton was out of tune on purpose. This was when Weller announced tha t they were splitting and Bruce wasn't too chuffed apparently!
Way better than the original.
so does curtis
This version is better than the original. That's all I have to say about that. 🌐✌️🛵
関ジャムのOPからきました
かっこいいなー!
obviously hes the original singer dude
curtis is the buddah and paul weller is his prophet
Bum bums.
Lettuce's version is better, with the original the best.
This is awful, what did they do? Listen to Curtis and think to themselves " you know what this needs, every ounce of funk drained from it until it's a angular stack of shite"?
Because that's what happened
