Thank you for this review...let me please share my experience with this beautiful pen.. I was born in the 70s, my father was a man who cared about handwriting, he had excellent penmanship. He was an engineer and use to have his pencils always well sharpened. But... the most precious treasure that always catched up my attention when I was at his office... was his Mont Blanc Noblesse Platinum set of 3 pieces, The Fountain Pen, the Mechanical pencil, and the Roller pen. Wow how exciting was watching him to write with that Fountain pen. For me the FP was kind of a Sword. I was perhaps 9 years old when I took the risk of asking him a brave question... Would you give it to me as a gift? My father gently smiled , he said Yes, but until you get your bachelor's degree . He took the pen, and put it into his drawers desk. And leave it there for 13 years. I grew and forgot the Pen, distracted by other topics of youthness. A few weeks after graduating as an engineer, I pass by his office to say hello. After a few minutes of talking, he said... I have a gift for you... he opened his drawer, rise the pen and said... this is yours. Wow I was full of happiness that day. I do not use it too much, keep it safe as a treasure. With that same Pen I signed my marriage act. After several years he shutdown his office, and I helped him to take out his stuff. I found the 2 other pieces of the MB set, and I asked again... he said yes with a bright smile. Those 2 are yours now. My father passed away peacefully in 2019. I have now this 41 years old Mont Blanc Noblesse kit. Last year I decided to bring them back to live. The Mechanical pencil is 0.9M lead. I bought a 2B grade ones. For the Roller pen a new sealed cartridge, and for the Fountain pen... leave it a few hours into a new Elektropura bottle water. With a syringe I passed water and air very carefully through the feed until the water was coming out clean. The Pen has a MB piston converter, it was stuck, I put it into water with a few drops of shampoo for hands, and that worked well. No damage at all. I bought a MB bottle of black ink. Filled the converter and YES! My pen was alive again... the nib is M, Platinum material. That is for me, the most precious pen in the world. Now I am learning and practicing cursive, because I want to have a nice handwriting as my dad. Baby steps of course. I bought a Pilot Metropolitan and a Lamy Safari All Black edition. And some day, I will buy a Mont Blanc set (A brand more related to me because of the emotional side). And perhaps... some day my children will be able to say... This is the MB of my grandfather, this is the MB of my dad, and this is mine. Best Regards, and thanks to all of you who took the time to read this memory.

I have a steel Noblesse with a steel nib. It is a nice writer, and if I am not mistaken, these pens were quite affordable when they came out. Montblanc definitely knows how to make good pens. It sort of is a pity that they only make luxury pens nowadays.

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  11 месяцев назад +9

Yeah I wish they put their expertise to use on making some at lower prices points. They don't need to be really low cost but even around the $200 range would be ok. If they did that it would probably benefit them long term. They can totally make a good quality pen that is simple, reliable, and writes wonderfully at that price. Doesn't have to be all fancy, but just a proper built, reliable, great writing pen. I would love to se them do this!

@@Doodlebud $200 range would indeed be amazing. But I'm afraid their prices will only go up. When I got 'serious' into the whole fountain pen thing in 2010, I bought a 145 for about $400. It was my first expensive pen. Nowadays, that model retails for around $700. Who says pens are a bad investment :)

Thanks for an excellent video. Beautiful pen. There were five models of the first Gen Noblesse introduced from 1973 onwards.. Your gold and platinum models (1147 and 1157 models), and stainless steel model (1124 model) had 14c nibs, and the two others had steel nibs (1120, 1122 models). All of them are great writers and very durable thanks to the metal body. They were introduced as a response to pens like the Aurora Hastil and were a great success for Montblanc. The second pen Noblesse pens and the CS (slimline) pens came in the early 1980s, and there was a third gen as well. There are plenty of these available on E-Bay. Incidentally, you can buy matching ballpoints and pencils and there was a finaliser model for some of the pens.

I’m 6’ 3” and have pretty big paws too, but I find my Noblesse pens are super easy to write with. I was pretty lucky bidding on a box at a postal auction, back in the late 90’s. Turns out that it was filled with 20 or so various Montblanc pens, that apparently had been repaired and Was lost in transit? I sold some, but kept a hold of half and still have 4 from that original box, which include a steel and gold Noblesse. They both write quite differently; one with a 4-5 mm stroke and the other is 6-7 mm. Both 14k nibs, but almost as firm as steel. They are incredible writers and I forget how much I like them, often eschewing them for my latest and greatest aquisition. Oh, also in that box, were 4 DuPont pens. I sold 3 and kept one, but it was stolen out of my car, years ago. It too was a great pen and one that doesn’t seem to get it’s due from the pen community. It was an 18k broad nib, dated from the 80’s and an absolute beauty. Was a time, when I’d pick up great vintage pens from second hand stores for a song, but them days are over. Even at garage sales, it seems that vultures get there at the crack of dawn to look for pens, watches and jewelry. (2 other things I collect). So, it’s nice to see, that while the $5 - $10 deals may be virtually non- existent, that 100 Loonies can get you a pen that is this nice. Enjoy.

Yeah I'm 6'6" and thin pens like this usually are something I avoid. But just adjusting my drip a little bit and wow is it every rewarding to write with! Similar to the Pilot Elite/e95s. Simple slim pen with a gold nib but performs wonderfully! Sounds like you scored some amazing finds!

The Noblesse is very lovely. I don’t own one yet. But I have the very beautiful, iconic pen that is often cited as the one that inspired this Montblanc pen. I’m talking of the Aurora Hastil. In fact, I have read in several places how Aurora actually made the Noblesse pens for Montblanc.
edit: I have said it before, but I think many vintage Montblanc pens are extremely desirable and wonderful writers. Also, often very affordable and great value.

Like Andy, I have a Noblesse with a steel nib, in a brushed Stainless Steel finish, and I really enjoy writing with it-very smooth, even though it is an extra fine. When I bought it many years ago (around 1979/1980) it was very affordable (it was discounted to $40 US and came with ink, converter, 5 cartridges, and a paper pad-I think it was a starter kit). You’ve got a great pen and deal! Congratulations!

Then I got one of these with an 18K nib. Wow. Totally amazing. I lve that thing even if it will only fit a small cartridge. It writes like a dream. I do behave and not put sheening inks in these (almost evey other pen I have is filled with sheen) because I know it just wont end well, so they get Diamine or Iroshizuku in there instead.

Hi DB!: You got a smokin' deal on that pen! Lovely! Writes FANTASTIC, what more do you want? I really like the look, although I think I would be drawn to the stainless steel ones. Vintage pens are GREAT!!! Pretty much, fountain pens reached their zenith around 1950. And VERY VERY good ones were made up until the 1970's. By this time fp technology had been extremely perfected. Not to say the newer pens aren't as good, there are really a LOT of great pens out there at all different price points. The older pens are very nice also, because the gold prices were way down in those days and gold nibs were a lot more affordable. So as used pens, the value is much higher, I feel, than with new gold nib pens. The really interesting thing now is that there are a lot of steel nib pens that challenge gold nib pens for performance. That's what make the new pens so fascinating. Steel nibs can equal lower prices but fine performance.

    Great find!
The problem with buying an used montblanc is that you never know if the seller sells an original or a fake.
So if you can buy it, then go to an official seller store to tell you if it is original or not, and if the eBay seller accepts returns then proceed. If not, you risk to buy a fake one.
But that's life and sometimes you have to take the risk.

From the time period, I'm betting that they were sold as "cartridge only." Basically because a standard converter didn't fit that great. Was kind of the heyday of cartridge only pens.😁
Not an amazing deal, but still well within the price range, as you said.
Patience is the key to buying from eBay. I have more than a sane person would have of vintage pens. I'll use a couple for examples. Esterbrook. A restored J series retails all the time for around $60 USD. Desk pens, for similar. I've gotten almost all of mine for $20 or less. Multiple that still work, and one I paid $15, sold as unrestored, but when it arrived, the seller had replaced the ink sac. Most I've paid for any Esterbrook was around $30 USD for one that retailers are asking closer to $100 USD.
And the, in my opinion, underrated 1940s Wahl-Eversharp Skyline. They're regularly between $100 and $150 USD restored. Hunt, you can get them for around $25 USD.
But the eBay prices fluctuate wildly. I've seen a seller trying to get $1500 for a possibly 1960s Esterbrook desk pen. And those who seem to think that they're worth over $100 for the J series. Wahl-Eversharp Skyline pens can be as crazy. I've seen ones with the gold filled cap so worn they were down to the base metal, clip had lost the plated cover (they look like one piece, but are 2, in just the clip) a lever itself was missing. There's no kind of generic ones that would fit. The entire lever/pressure bar is proprietary. They wanted $150 USD to start the bidding... Just picked up a hunter green one with a green and amber striped cap for $26. Took a gamble on it. Looked awful. No brightwork. Looked really scratched. Took a polishing pad to it, was some sort of tarnish and hand grot. Looks like new, now.
Patience and passing on plenty is the key.😁

Oh HELP PLEASE! I loved this video because I gave one of these (newly acquired) and do not know what converter will fit! I have the first edition which has no threads where the later models have/need threaded converters threaded. Has anyone found other converters that fit without having to modify? I’m not a tinkerer ;) I hope someone finds this comment…with help for a gal who loves this pen and needs an answer 😊
PS…I paid $105.00! In Very very good condition on eBay from an American high rated seller. They are out there! And cheaper than new stuff.

How do you think this stacks up against a 149?

They are very different pens in every possible way. They are both fountain pens, both have gold nibs, and thats about as far as the similarities go.

Montblanc is a German company, not a French company. It sounds very strange to use a distinctly French pronunciation of the company name.

It is a German company but the actual mountain it's named after is in France.

I have 2 Slimlines in brushed stainless - black and blue both with stainless nibs, the ballpoint in gold to match your Noblesse and in 1985 my hubby gave me the Noblesse Burgundy (lacquer/metal) with an 18k Nib. Now after reading all of your comments I may just try it out. DB thanks for your review.
