Just a quick question, how much rotation should there be in a properly tensioned belt?
I have built my own grinder and I tension it so that the belt can turn around 45 degrees on the longest side of the belt. Just curious if this is too much tension or too little.

After Literally almost beating my brains in, I finally stumbled across your video, looking for Tips and tricks for dialing the Tracking in along with pulley & belt alignment. And man Having the ability to actually TURN the tracking assembly side to side, along with the Tilt Was THE TICKET, and with making it with 1/2" steel as well as my Spacer on the end of my Bar, instead of 1/4", I FINALLY Got this thing dialed in. I used a 40 pound Mini Shock instead of the Spring. I'm DEFINITELY Gonna Add The VSC as Mine is a 3450rpm Motor, It's A bit much full speed...LOL

Good info. I'm trying to understand the tracking on my Burr King and I think all I have is a knob that pivots the idler wheel side to side. Here's a link to my grinder ruclips.net/video/HtSFCTFNEjo/видео.html Although it's not the stock setup the tracking mechanism is stock. It seems to track well but I wonder if I can benefit from adding a lever that changes the idler wheel vertical angle like the open end wrench knob that you have?
What kind of motor were you running on the belt grinder based off dan’s design? Thing looked futuristic...
An old treadmill DC motor. It eventually failed. Haha.

Fianllyy getting my rev grinder up and running. No machinst skills :/ think my build was a bit oit of whack. Thinkong of drilling extra hole in the tracking hinge... just seems it doesnt want to work properly
Well i added an extra half diameter to that hole and ir seemed to do the trick. Could slide the hinge in about a 1/4 bolt diameter and worked great.

Also, have no vfd, so its 0-> 100.

With reversing it has to do with the leading wheel changing from top to bottom

Great explanation dude. I like your design a lot. I built Jeremy Schmidt's 2x72 and absolutely love it. But it has its downsides in that it needs to be perfectly built and is a pretty complex build. I'm having tracking issues with it . But then again I'm using homemade mdf wheels and a treadmill motor so theres too many variables in what could be off.
As of now I got it working pretty well with shit wheels and bearings. Once I get real wheels for it and eventually the proper motor I'm sure I'll get it dialed in.
Needless to say .....when......not if I build another 2x72 I'll be doing your design. It looks sturdy and not overly built or complex. Keep it up dude that thing is sweet. 👍 haha I just realized that I was ramble typing....sorry about that .
Hey man! Yeah I agree on all points you made. The catalyst to design and build this was because my first one was pretty terrible with tracking. I wanted to better understand how that works and add the tilting mechanism. I’m about ready to finish the tilting work rest, so be on the look out for that vid this Saturday. I appreciate you taking the time to write in. 👊🏻
Tremendous video, wish i could have seen it before i built my grinder and spent hours trying to figure out what was off on my tracking.
One thing I would note that wasnt mentioned, tracking likely needs to be adjusted when switching from one belt grit to another.

Thanks so much for the tips, my grinder was running with the alignment wheel loop sided just to get the belt straight on the platen, added a 1/4" spacer fixed it after checking with a straight edge.

Hi Brian I totally agree with Notus Notus this now explains why my grinder is all over the place it’s a cheap model bought for me as a present however checking out the angles shows me there are no level ones in existence on it, I don’t have the money to buy a new one however if I cut it apart at the welds I suppose I could rebuild from scratch, this is the best video out there on this topic Brian well done, but now rather than thinking it was me doing something wrong I have some decisions to make about the future of my grinder. Once again awesome video sir.
Thanks Robby, I appreciate that. What model did you get? I bet you can shore that thing up pretty good. Also ACE hardware has some spacers that work well if you need to move the wheels around on the axles. Just a thought.
House / Work hi Brian thanks for the reply when I turned fifty my mother bought it for me it’s a Chinese model she found on eBay, not ideal I know but it was a lovely thought she had obviously been listening to my wife saying she was tired of listening to me moan about using a small belt sander designed for wood I inherited from my farther to make knives, one good thing if I dismantle and rebuild it technically it will then have been built in the UK and not China, it will require cutting all the welds possibly replacing a part then re-welding it back together again.
I built one of the basic grinders very similar to your first one. All holes were drilled in one pass and tubes were clamped and/or laid on a flat surface for welding. I can get the belt to track good but anything more than a light touch causes the belt to fly off the grinder. I've checked multiple times for parallel and alignment between all the wheels and all looks good with the Mark 1 but didn't use feeler gauges. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Could be the belt it too loose. What’s the tensioner look like?
@@HouseMadeUS The tensioner is the same design as your first build, in fact I built a replacement with no improvement. I've moved the platen in and out to vary the tension, lately I'll have the belt come to the top of the tracking roller bolt before pushing down on it to mount the belt. Any more tension seems to make the belt wander even more and same can be said for less tension. I tried a couple different springs but the compression weight isn't listed on the packaging unless you count #34 (or #29) as the weight. Common interpretation would be Number 34, not 34 lbs. Current spring is 1.250 od x 4" hard drawn MB. The tensioner tube is a little loose in the upright so I got some bearing end set screws ( I know them as Vellears (spelling) from my last job) and strategically placed one in the upright to keep it from twisting. It works for the most part but makes compressing it a little more difficult even though I almost polished the tube.. Another possible issue I noticed is the rollers can get quite warm during operation, don't know if that is common or not. Appreciate the help!

Just another very small hint Ref: Tracking Wheel Adjustment Bolt / Screw. instead of using 3/8" in. - 16 NC (NC = National Course Threads) We're talking a "FINE" adjustment for the {Floating Tracking Mechanism} Tracking Wheel, so why not use a "FINE" threaded bolt, i.e., 3/8" in. - 24 NF, (NF = National Fine Threads.) Should be able to hit that Goldilocks position much easier, and keep it right where you want it. Great stuff.
You’re right about the fine adjustment. I think Brian’s concept was a build for the lowest common denominator, with least amount of tools. If I recall the whole thing can be done with 2 different taps. But you’re free to upgrade any of the build. Case in point, I put bronze bushings in the tracking support pivot

Man....After 3 years of struggeling with the tracking of my beltgrinder i finally found the courage to tear it down and make the adjustments shown in your video.
Now the tracking is pretty on point with the tracking wheel in level....before i had to crank it up like 10 degrees to the left.

I understand the straight edge, but it is straight in reference to what(especially with a floating wheel)? I usually use a square instead of a straight edge. If you want to stop the belt from warping, loosen the belt after use... Also, it might seem dangerous, but the belt goes off to the side when it comes off(in my experience) not at you. When I was 1st testing the reverse concept, I had many fly off forward and back...
I hear you, mostly I’m looking for alignment against the outside wall of the wheel. If they are not aligned all in the same axis then there will be issues.
