    I've never understood people's problem with the previous Z6/Z7 models. Their only disadvantage is their bad subject detection. The autofocus itself, which is not the same thing as subject detection (people always mix that up), is quite fast. Apart from that, great image quality, great colour science, great ergonomics, excellent lenses. And they have always been a bit to a lot cheaper than the equivalent models of Canon and Sony.
    A used Z6 is the best you can get for 700-800€ (whatever that is in the UK/US). However, if someone is considering buying a Z6iii, I would highly recommend the Z7ii instead, if you don't need better subject detection and video.

      That "only" disadvantage depends on use case. On one extreme, some famous fashion photographers (like Peter Coulson) still use a Hasselblad H6 professionally.. That thing has a single focusing point, no subject detection at all and in fact, offers less focusing options than a decade old D3100. Obviously any Z6/Z7 is more than usable for such line of work.
      On the polar opposite, check out Jared Polin's Canon R5 II video. I mean this is the gold standard in 2024 and no Nikon camera is remotely comparable with this. Especially watch basketball part in that video; Admit it, you would LOVE to have something similar from Nikon. I would.
      I find Z7 II's focusing capabilites more comperable to my old D800 than high-end Canon/Sony models. If you want to make sure camera reliably focuses at where its supposed to, you are better off putting focusing point yourself, like a D800. Camera then works fast and accurately; just like a D800... This doesn't make Z7 unusable, D800 was the top dog of its time, near instant fast autofocus, face detection in viewfinder usually works and is capable of tracking fast moving subjects like flying birds or dancers etc. Don't get me wrong, being on similar level as D800 easily puts in "good enough for everying" category but why accept 2015 era technology as "good enough" when you can also buy a Canon which can literally determine who is holding the ball in a basketball game and focus on that guy even before I can even get the composition right?

    I shoot with and own many brands, and as a photographer first shooter, I have never had any issues with the Nikon mirrorless brand. I started into mirrorless when the Sony a7rII was released and picked up Nikon's Z6 when it was released. There was a noticeable acquisition speed difference between my Sony and Nikon bodies, but for photography, it always performed flawlessly for me in my portrait and nature work.

    I have taken some of my best photos with the first Z6. I can't understand why so many speak poorly of the camera. The operation is intuitive, and the results have always convinced me. I eventually switched systems because I find Sigma lenses so good. I miss my Z6; if I were in a better financial position, I would have kept the Z6 as a second camera. The fact is, when the Z6 was released, it was one of the best cameras on the market.

    The Zf has a dedicated exposure compensation dial because it's all about the dials. There are *no* dedicated dials on the Z6III, Z7II, Z8, or Z9. The entire operational approach is "press a button, turn a dial," except for the tasks given to the two dials without a button press. This is how many Nikon cameras have worked for about 35 years.

    The z6 III has a dual gain sensor. From what i saw on another video, from ISO 100 to 800 the camera prioritizes the dynamic range over the noise. Software these days can clean up any noise at those levels. After ISO 800 it prioritizes the noise level over dynamic range. But they say there's not a lot of difference between the z6 III and z6 II. I shoot a lot of milky way photos so I'm waiting for someone to give a review on how it does at ISO 3200 and 6400 at night. I will probably sell my z6 II next year and replace it with the III. The two main things i hate about mirrorless cameras is that the dicuss tracking (because the sensor does the tracking and capturing of the images) and the screen blackout in burst mode. My understanding is that the z6 III has a little blackout when in mechanical shutter but it's like a DSLR. That's only normal because the shutter has to open and close. I can handle that type of blackout. I do not like it blacking out until I let off the shutter button like my z6 II has. The focus tracking on the z6 II is fine for portraits but there's been so many times when i needed it for other things and it didn't work as well. I have the z8 which is better than both of those so even if i keep the z6 II I'm still good. But sometimes i prefer a smaller body to carry around. I do a little street photography and the z8 really stands out even with a pancake lens on.

    • @csc-photo
      @csc-photo 2 месяца назад +1

      With the electronic shutter in the Z6III, you'll experience virtually black-out free EVF. Certainly at 20 fps. VERY different than the Z6II (no lag).

    • @carlmcneill1139
      @carlmcneill1139 2 месяца назад

      @csc-photo a DSLR isn't totally blackout free because of the mirror going up and down as well as the shutter opening and closing. As long as the z6 III is like that I'll be happy with it. The z6 and z6 II completely black out when I'm busy mode. You can't see what you're tracking. I've seen people put a red dot optical in the hot shoe so they can track what they're shooting. I like the looks of the zf but I don't think I'd like the feel of it.

    • @deadtothewxrld
      @deadtothewxrld 2 месяца назад +1

      It's not crippled when you account for 2 things: the fact that Nikon does not bake in noise reduction like some other companies, so when it's applied, the dynamic range differences are very small... and the lower ISO values don't have quite the dynamic range that higher ones do. Beyond these, I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of photographers, pro and hobbyists alike, could not tell a difference when compared to other cameras. These issues are only magnified in the age of internet commenters demanding absolute perfection from any and all products.

      I went with the Z8 just recently. shot with a z6ii for 3 years. The D850 was always my favorite DSLR so this made sense. Don't get me wrong I'm keeping my Z6ii. But I really appreciate the 45mp and the feeling of a "normal" sized camera for my larger hands.
      Ps. Those long lenses like the 70-200 & the 180-600mm are a dream on the Z8 and very awkward feeling on the Z6ii
      If you can't live without a flippy screen (which btw isn't really useful on really sunny days)then definately the Z6iii
      Also not having a mechanical shutter anymore is crazy. I'm really enjoying it. It's an amazing camera I only had it for like 5 days though. Iset it uppretty much exactly tly like my D850 so I'm really feeling at home with this thing.

  • @Eikenhorst
    @Eikenhorst 2 месяца назад +1

    When it comes to dynamic range, the Z6iii is interesting indeed. According to the data by Photos-to-Photons, the dynamic range at base ISO is 10.4 for the mark 3, while it was 11.2 for the mark 1 and 2. The Z7 goes to 11.6 stops but only because it has a base ISO of 64, at 100. What is interesting is that the Z6iii has a dual gain with a big jump at ISO 800. From that point down it is on par with the previous Z6 models and basically all other full frame cameras. It is only at lower ISO that this sensor is lacking behind, worse even than APS-C models like the Sony A6700 (but it beats these by almost a stop at ISO 800)

    • @FawfulDied
      @FawfulDied 2 месяца назад

      Nikon also doesn't bake in noise reduction automatically like some other companies. When you account for that, the difference in dynamic range to similarly priced cameras is not much at all.

    I see this as a good thing to be honest. I am looking to get into the full frame camera world (bought a couple of full frame lenses for my A6300 the last couple of years to slowly build up a good kit for when I would make the jump to full frame).
    Given that the A7 IV is due for an upgrade in the Sony line-up, I'll probably be buying a new camera next year. I was planning to either get the new A7 V when it comes out or (if the upgrades weren't as substantial) get a A7 IV at a lower price (thanks to the release of the newer model).
    Seeing, the Z6 III do so well in reviews, means that Sony will have to make a substantial upgrade with the A7 V. And that's a good thing in my book. Strong competition means better cameras for all of us who are in the market for buying a new one.

  • @BobN54
    @BobN54 2 месяца назад +1

    On the DR thing - the technical reason is that faster ADCs tend to be noisier. Simple as that. The panic about Z6III's seems to come from Bill Claff's PDR metric, that makes it nearly a stop worse than the Z6II - but then no-one really knows what 'PDR' means, I suspect including its creator. The plain DR is about half a stop worse at low ISO settings, as said likely due to those faster ADCs. But for most normal photographers operating their camera in the normal way, this simply isn't an issue.

    Why? because my glass is still great and there are loads of second hand lenses that would work well on mirrorless bodies. Lenses that I'd throw straight on are the EF85mm f/1.8, EF50mm f/1.4, EF-s 18-135 stm, 24mm stm, 24-105 f/4 L IS and 70-200 IS II L f/4, plus 60mm macro and 100mm macro L IS.

    Honestly, the CF Express thing isn't as big as people make it out to be. I bought a Z6 (which has a single CF express slot) last year, and to be completely honest, I thought that this would be one of the things I hate about the Z6 after using it for half a year but it's absolutely not.
    Compared to V90 SD cards, CFXB cards are faster and cheaper. They are also faster and cheaper than the smaller CF express type A cards that Sony is using (and also preventing other camera manufacturers from using...). The hybrid slots in Sony cameras are pretty nice,m but since Sony is the only company that uses them, you end up with much lower sales volume which means higher prices. And the Type A standard is slower than the Type B standard, so you end up with slower cards that are more expensive.
    Using a Z6 which has a single CFXB slot, I totally removed from my mind any buffer issues, the card is way faster than what the camera can fill, so there absolutely no waiting for shots to be written to the card. On a camera with CFXB + SD, this is a little trickier. I think I would rather have dual slots of the same type, either 2 SD or 2 CFXB (but to this day, only the Z9 and yet to be release Canon R1 have two of these cards). Knowing me, I could shoot this camera and ignore it has an SD slot because of the slower speed and vastly reduced buffer. kind of a shame, but hey what are you gonna do. When they finally dropped the series, i think they still didn't quite know what mirrors cameras were about, which probably leaked into their Z series design policies.
    If i could get a reliable Nikon 1 V5 today -- something they never made -- I'd snap it up today. And, if they had made such a thing, it would probably have pointed the way to whatever came next.
    The slightly dumbed down J5 seems to be pretty popular still.

    Canon will likely release the R6 Mark III next year or perhaps the year after (so 2026) so they will leapfrog the Z6 III for sure in their next iteration. This is one market that Sony and Canon will generally stay ahead in because they get their R6 (Canon) and A7 series up to snuff before Nikon did. However, in the higher-end market (the R5/Z8/A7R series) that gets more interesting, since Nikon will update the Z8 before the other two update their cameras again. So Nikon is probably ahead there in that regard. But it's all a game of leapfrog to be honest. Although it will be interesting to see what Nikon does for the Z9... if they'll release a faster Z9 but perhaps at a lower-resolution like say 36-40MP that favors speed over resolution, or what they'll do (maybe fuse two 24MP sensors together with dual Expeed 7's to make a higher-res global shutter system).

    • @batuhancokmar7330
      @batuhancokmar7330 2 месяца назад

      CMOS chips are silicon. If you put one silicon die on top of other, its stacked, there is nothing that can be "partial" about the process. "partial" probably means its partial as in not everything is that should/could be moved to stacked die was moved. Speculating here but maybe, top layer (sensor itself) is more or less the same as previous Z6 II (including all circuitry) but they added a second stack is just for giving more space row/column activation transistors and required wirings to speed things up.
      In either case "partial" just means its a "simpler and cheaper" stacked sensor. Maybe designed to be manufactured at less capable fabs, maybe a simpler second stack for better yields, decreasing cost per chip, maybe less inter-die wiring to improve bonding interface errors.

      So when comparing them to their proper equivalents, Z8 evidently does not have as big of a penalty as Z6iii, because Z8 has a better stacked sensor.
