  • Runs great after water pump related issues. I got everything sorted out and took it out for a boat ride.

I was given one of these last week, and I’m not super knowledgeable about these older motors. Could you tell me how the water pump and all that works on these things? I cranked mine and noticed it wasn’t peeing, so I got scared and killed it. But once I got to actually looking on the motor, I can’t find where the water is supposed to come out. Came looking for videos to explain how this motor works, but In your video, I don’t see it peeing either, so obviously I’m missing something. Any help would be appreciated

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same model but don’t see mine peeing either. Not sure if that’s just how these were made or what’s up!

Do you prefere the older 6 hp or the later 8 hp models? And aren't you afraid of that motor laying down in the front of the boat getting scratched?

The only OMC 6/8hp that I do not care for are the 80's models, especially the ones with the plastic carbs. I find they do not idle as well and are a bit harder to fine tune. They aren't BAD motors per say, but I prefer the CD powerhead used from 65 to 79. I think my favorite ones have to be the 1991+ models, with the top mounted starter and front mounted shifter - they are super smooth and quiet.
And yes, although that 5hp is sitting securely, it could pick up a scratch or two. With the water being this cold in November, I always like to keep an alternate source of power onboard.

@kyledevries4423 That's interesting. I heard quite some positive opinions on the later 8hp models, but I wouldn't trust those plastic carbs as well. However, the 1991+ models seem to be a little less known. Good to know that you like them! From the early 6hp era I don't like the CD ignition very much. I prefer the earlier style with points and condensers
