Again I am tired of hearing stats on cases. Why dont they share more recovery stats.

The holidays and cold weather are coming up...eliminating get-togethers. This should be an interesting holiday season.

Crazy to think not spending Christmas with family.

@@heartmomma6460 do it anyway. If your from Douglas County NE, we don't have a problem with COVID here. There are around 4,000 currently sick, but it has a 99% recovery rate, and with 571,000 people in Douglas county, that's not even a 10th of a percentage of our population. Why they are making a big deal confounds me.

@@omahacheeks764 Respectfully, our concern is with hospital capacity. We are nearing our ICU limits in the five-county metro area. At the time of this response, there are only 25 ICU beds available in the metro area. Flu season hasn't hit yet and COVID hospitalizations are increasing. From critical care physician Dr. Daniel Johnson: "As we head into a normal flu season 85% occupancy of ICU beds makes people like me uneasy, because we know we're going to have an increase of patients coming into the ICU and needing ventilators - we do every year. So the thought of having a flu season and a COVID-19 pandemic on top of it at the same time makes us extremely uneasy... if people do not change the way we are currently behaving, we are not going to have capacity. The assumption that if you get sick that we're going to have a hospital bed for you is a false assumption."

@@Nebraskamed Thank you for your response. Hospital capacity has always been high. You'll need to send people home to ride it out. Being on a ventilator is too damaging for people anyway. I struggle to understand why you're still putting people on ventilators when 1. they are most likely going to die and 2. if they do survive, their quality of life is permanently downgraded. What good is it to live if you are still sick after the treatment? Doctors are to do no harm, you know now that ventilators do more harm than good. People can only take so much. We need each other. I need my family and my friends, and they need me. It is wrong not to allow family in with the sick. No one to be their advocate. To sit by their side. To support them. Saying goodbye over video. Disgraceful. The suicides and depression are causing harm to our community. People need each other.
Also, the stats say that there are over 800 ventilators in Nebraska. Only 13 are being used in Douglas County. You're not being truthful. You only have 25 icu beds, then convert a whole wing into an icu. There are about 4000 people sick with covid in Douglas County at the moment, most are getting over it at home. You're fearmongering. Shameful.
The public has done things your way. Covid is lingering doing things your way. Masks do not stop the virus or hinder it. Look at China, they've been wearing them for decades. If masks worked, China wouldn't have a problem with viruses. I know you want to feel like you're doing something to help, but wearing masks do not help. They hinder. People need people. Allow them in with their family so they can support them. Doing things your way aren't working. They are hurting us. The virus is here and we have to get through it. The faster the better.

@@omahacheeks764 Sure, we could convert wings for ICU care, but who would staff them? There is a limited amount of trained ICU providers - it's not an infinite resource. With regard to your comment about visitors, we are allowing one registered visitor per patient. And with regard to your comment about ventilators, it's true we have an ample supply now. But that wasn't the reason for us calling this press conference, and at no point did we say ventilators were in short supply. You're also right about not wanting to put patients on a ventilator. It's always our last resort if it's the only thing that might save our patient's life. And some patients, like our own Steve Schrader, is pretty thankful he was put on a ventilator, because he's here today and he's doing well. His wife is thankful too. We simply want to make sure there are hospital beds available for those who need them. We see a disturbing trend and are providing advice on how to keep businesses and schools open and beds available. We also care about people who are 80 and older the same way we care about those who are younger.
