Merry Christmas Scotty & Jess and thank you for your RUclips channel this year has been tough for us but you and Jess bring light into our home. Thank you and have a great New Year.
Hi guys, me and my wife also bought a house in Nelson around the same time as you and we have been renovating it ever since. Your videos have been a huge inspiration and a great guide book on how to do things :) we appreciate all your hard work, time and effort. It’s also been nice knowing that renovation fatigue both mentally and financially isn’t something that only we have experienced haha thanks for being awesome. Merry Christmas
With inspiration from this channel, and some others as well, last year I started my renovation project. I purchased a home that was destroyed by it's previous tenants, and have been doing a full remodel of the whole interior. My entire goal was to do all the work by myself, and friends, to fully involve myself with all aspects of building a home. Electrical, hvac, drywall, plumbing, carpentry, you name it. For a first home it's been a daunting task, and I haven't really been this nervous in a long time. I am also realizing how expensive renovation is, my financial situation is getting very tight as I near the finish line. I'm super close to being able to move in, but there's just a giant laundry list of small items I need to constantly attack to get it done. It's been very overwhelming the past few weeks, and just today I had a mini panic attack like I wasn't going to finish in time and lose the house. But after watching your video, I realize that I have plenty of time. Just hearing you say "have a rest" snapped me out of it, and made me realize I just need to focus on relaxing for a week. I need to recharge, and that's okay! It was truly helpful to hear that from someone in a similar situation. I've also been super picky like you said, and need to narrow the focus down to just getting the project complete. With a little break, and a more focused and upbeat attitude, I'll be moved in before I even know it! With channels like yours, it makes my impossible mission of building a home without hiring contractors actually possible. I could never have afforded this without doing the work myself. Thanks so much, it's such a blessing to hear so many of the same problems and road blocks are prevalent in your projects as well. It makes me feel as it's part of the normal process, and not some outlier who has all these issues where everyone else is just smooth sailing. I hope you have a happy holidays, and a wonderful new year!
Scott and Jess, thank you so much for your help this year. Your videos, tips and tricks has helped me understand what I need to do to my home, and for that I am grateful. Have an awesome break, and Merry Christmas to you both.
really love the videos of work on your house, glad to see them coming back for 2025. I noticed the interior paint and love it as well. looking forward to watching every saturday morning again, its part of my weekend ritual!
Scott, when I glue a simple mitre joint the way you did, I first put a layer of glue, CA or PVA, on the halves and let it dry without assembly. This will soak in and prep the joint. Then glue the joint as you did, but always put kitchen greaseproof paper underneath! You'll get some very impressively strong joints for this "lazy" type of joinery!
I use the liner from cereal packets as it is a very non stick surface ( that is after the gannets have chomped the contents). The finishing always takes longer and costs more than expected which is why builders homes always look unfinished; the big work is done just the finishing.
The quality and planning you both put into the things you do are amazing. You may be frustrated at times with progress on your remodel but I've no doubt that when it's finished you will be very happy.
That's why they sell super glue + activator packs called "Mitre Bond" or something similar. Add some baking powder and you have instant filler. It should be common knowledge by now as I've been using it since the mid '90s.
@@ScottBrownCarpentry If you don't have any activator you can make up a sodium bicarbonate solution to spray on the joint. It just has to be mildly alkaline to work.
Also, put something underneath! (like parchment paper or something). But for door / window trim I've been using what Spencer Lewis (Insider Carpentry) suggests, Hi Pur hot melt adhesive. I feel like that's stronger and better suited to deal with the seasonal movement. Although Funny Carpenter did some tests with CA and finger jointed material that came out pretty strong.
I am impressed by your determination to ”insulate your Windows”. On top here in Sweden, our houses are equipped with 3-glass Windows as standard (since our climate are slightly colder ).
This channel was one of my favourite discoveries form the last few months and I've since binged about 20 episodes. As a someone who has always made stuff and is now starting his own reno I appreciate the tips and tricks, and love the mix of practical work and life updates. Keep on doing what you're doing and have a great holiday period x
Thanks for a great year of videos on your channel Scott & Jess. Congratulations on reaching 400K - certainly very well deserved !! Your trip to Japan and the work you did with Nikita was a great way to finish the year & completely agree that Nikita is totally inspiring - you have to go back in 2025 for an update !! Best wishes to you both & to everyone who's been involved in your channel this year - escpecially Ray ! Hope Parearau's doing OK - maybe we could have a smoko time update so we know how he's doing Look forward to more adventures from NZ in 2025 👏🏼 ps. Jess - buy Scott some activator for his SuperGlue (CA Glue) 😉
Congrats, guys! A big year and wishing you the best in 2025. Loved the Japan content. Hope you continue to explore your interests on this channel and sprinkle in non-building videos when you feel it's right.
I live down in Dunners but if I'm ever up your way I will be sure to drop in to the Dog's Bone! Thanks for the year of vids, they are a breath of fresh air in these sometimes.... 'emotional' times.
Congratulations to you both, Jess, the garden is looking fabulous - the reservation is looking fantastic. Best wishes for your Christmas break. 😁👌👌❤️❤️
Hello, 20 years ago the situation would have been identical 😉 We have a saying that says that you build your first house for your enemy, your second for your friend, and only the third for yourself. 3 years after the construction, I have only just acquired the knowledge to build the right house, the one I really want. greetings from Poland
Thanks for so many amazing videos this year, you have been inspiring and I look forward each week to seeing your videos, get some well deserved rest and see you in the new year 🎉
Scott- CA glue is 2-part & needs the spray activator to work. I didn't see that in the vid. Also, my experience with it here in California is that it doesn't work well with real wood trim (In the "states" that's usually Pine). I think it's because it gets absorbed by the end grain. It works real well with MDF (medium density fiberboard) trim which is very common in tract homes and multi-family bldgs (apartments & condominiums). Keep up the good work! Your video's bring back fond memories of when I lived in Wellington ( building a terminal addition for ANZ at the Wellington airport). I remember taking the fairy across the channel & landing in Picton & then mountain biking down to Lake Wanaka (?) & back. Can't remember if I went through Nelson or not though.
Hi Scot I'm renovating a house too and I also add extra insulation on the external walls. I do it with glass wool of 15cm thickness. So my window sills get about 17cm thicker. What I do is buying secondhand table on the internet and cut those into the right pieces. It gives you good quality material for a really low price. The other day I bought a dining table for like €25,00. I live in the Netherlands.
I find it refreshing, to see someone else struggle with the super glue method to join architrave. Social media is full of people demonstrating it as 'the only' method... Always enjoy your videos, Scott and well done for not gluing your fingers together! 🙂
Thanks for the vid, got my spirit up a bit, I am renovateing myself now, and at this point after 4 months (still WIP) I start to think that I am doing shitty job since it take so long, but if it took a pro 10 months I am a excused ;)
A trick I use is to apply CA to the ends, let it soak in and dry, then reapply and stick them together. Usually the end grain soaks up the glue and doesn't bond fully, but if you seal the end grain the glue will stick to itself much better.
Thanks again Scott and Jess for sharing your adventures this year. My partner and myself are visiting the Nelson area next year due (not in small part) to the online exposure you have shown. Maybe the NZ Tourism Dept. should also become a patron? 🙂
Good sanding Jess… love what you have done SBC.. so look forward to yr videos. Your garden looks beautiful. Yes, we want to visit Japan and stay at Nikita’s Airbnb wud be great. Merry Christmas Jess & Scott🎄🎄🎄
Been a subscriber for about 5 years i think. You guys are amazing and i love the videos. Scotts voice is very relaxing! 🙂 Looking forward to your vids in 2025. fromall the way in Kent, UK.
Good to c a vid again!😊There are three grades of CA glue.Thin, medium and thick. The end grain on the mitre joint might just be drinking all the CA and giving you a dry joint. Maybe it would work with the thick CA which has some gap filling capability and does not flow so aggressively.😊Merry Xmas.🤶
What you have experienced and learnt as of today was the journey you had. If you had of purchases a home 20 years ago, sure you'll be financially better, but you wouldn't have had the money to go on that trip 20 years ago where you would have met people and experience the life that you have had. No regrets
Mate, we bought our house in 2014, and the first room we tackled was converting a sitting room into a kitchen, and it's STILL not finished. When thinking about how much a renovation costs, you've got to think about the long term. If you're planning on living there for a long time, the money you spend on things is less important than doing something that you WANT to live in.
G,day Scott Brown Carpentry from Sydney Australia. If you want cristalcrylate "Supa glue" to work effectively, use a heat gun on each surface before applying. There needs to be no humidity at all present. Careful you don't glue your fingers.🎄🌏
can you tell me the name of the green colour you used walls in that bedroom… I really like. I really liked the blue colour you used in the living room and ended up using it in our bathroom and it was a great choice… thank you. and thanks for a wonderful year of videos… have a great break. D
I live in the UK. What island and part of New Zealand do you live in? It's strange because many of your film clips are similar to the UK. You have burger bars, the sound of Sparrows in the garden and Sweet Pea flowers. Two worlds far apart but with many similarities. Cheers
We live in Nelson, top of the South Island. The South Island in particular is similar to the Uk. We are often reminded of our time in Scotland and an England down here.
@ScottBrownCarpentry Thanks for getting back. I'll look your area up. By the end and with the rain it was really like the UK. Good luck with the rest of the house project and have a great Christmas
Just wondering...is it typical for restaurants in NZ to be opened only 4 days? In the US restaurants that aren't open 7 days a week is an oddity...its awful! too much work
Merry Christmas Scotty & Jess and thank you for your RUclips channel this year has been tough for us but you and Jess bring light into our home. Thank you and have a great New Year.

Even the Japanese carpenters; Scott relax with all the details and it hasn´t got to be 110 %.. Happy Christmas.
That garden is AWESOME!! Hope you both have a lovely holiday break and I'm looking forward to seeing you in 2025
Enjoy the Christmas and New Years break. When you come back, maybe give us a tour of the house as it is now and what your future plans are.
The quality and planning you both put into the things you do are amazing. You may be frustrated at times with progress on your remodel but I've no doubt that when it's finished you will be very happy.
Renovating is expensive but then you've got it forever! Keep up the good work and don't cut corners you'll regret!
got to use the activator spray for CA glue! then it works so well.

Did you put any insulation in your new mullion ?
What is the green colour/brand you used in the room?
